Baltimore Key Bridge collapse latest updates: Six workers presumed dead as recovery efforts resume - The Independent

Moment bridge in Baltimore collapses after ship collision

The search has resumed for the six missing construction workers who are now presumed dead following the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse on Tuesday.

A search and rescue mission for the six missing men, all construction workers, was called off on Tuesday night when Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath said there was no hope of finding them alive due to the frigid water and the length of time since the accident.

The search and rescue operation, which resumed on Wednesday morning, has now shifted to a recovery mission.

It comes as fears over the economic and trade disruption caused by the bridge collapse mount.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge has long been a critical link for trucking and motor vehicles linking Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York. It was also the busiest in the US for car shipments, handling more than 750,000 vehicles in 2023, according to data from the Maryland Port Administration.

Rep Carol Miller, who sits on the trade subcommittee, told Fox News the bridge collapse will “affect trade.” “I’m worried about the families and all of the inconvenience that will occur because the bridge is gone. It was such a good link,” she said.

Recap: How did the crash occur?

The Maryland Transportation Authority said that it is too early in the investigation to understand the full picture of what caused the collapse.

“It’s what we call a continuous structure every little piece is connected to another – and unfortunately it’s a catastrophic collapse,” they said.

Reports suggest that the Dali had “lost propulsion” as it left the port embarking on its journey, with crew notifying officials that they had lost control of the vessel, ABC reported, citing an unclassified intelligence report.

“The vessel notified MD Department of Transportation (MDOT) that they had lost control of the vessel and an collision with the bridge was possible,” ABC said, quoting the report by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.

“The vessel struck the bridge causing a complete collapse.”

However, some have also questioned whether the structural integrity of the bridge itself was strong enough.

Julian Carter, a structural and civil engineering expert, earlier told Sky News that the structures of the bridge were “very weak” at certain points.

Fire officials said earlier that they do not have any information as to whether there was a problem with the 300-metre-long ship, and have not spoken to the pilot of the vessel yet.

Chief Wallace added that he could not confirm if there had been a fuel leakage from the cargo ship.

“We hope as the sun comes up, we will get a much better picture if we do have a fuel spill and what the impact has been so far,” he said.

Gov Moore said on Wednesday that it’s still unclear what caused the ship’s power to go out. “There needs to be accountability to make sure these things do not happen again and that we have a system in place to make sure they don’t,” he said at a press conference.

NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy told CBS News on Wednesday that the agency has the voyage data recorder, which can provide “a timeline” of the lead-up to the crash as early as later today. The instrument can also give insights into positioning of the vessel and power loss, she said.

Baltimore bridge collapse sparks trade disruption with unusable port – what economic impact will it have?

Around a dozen cargo ships were estimated to be stuck inside the port unable to leave as the bridge spans the only route in and out of the harbor where it is located. Another 30 small small cargo ships, tug boats and pleasure craft were also in the port, while about 40 heading for Baltimore were forced to divert

US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg said that a “main area of concern” was the livelihoods of port workers, telling a press conference on Wednesday that thousands of jobs could be affected by the incident.

Brother of one of the victims said that officials didn’t have enough time to evacuate the men

Martin Suazo, the brother of Maynor Yassir Suazo, one of the men presumed dead in the tragedy, said officials did not have enough time to evacuate the men from the area due to the length of the bridge, according to Diario La Prensa, a Honduran outlet.  He said officials only had about two minutes and 30 seconds to stop the flow of traffic in the area and his brother and coworkers became trapped.

He added that the Honduras Embassy in Washington DC is working with him to help bring his brother’s body back to the country once it’s recovered.

Two construction workers presumed dead now identified

Maynor Yassir Suazo Sandoval, 37, was identified by his family as one of the construction workers who was on the bridge fixing potholes when it collapsed in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Mr Suazo Sandoval’s brother, Martin Suazo, told CNN his brother had lived in the United States for 18 years and was originally from Azacualpa in Honduras. He was a married father of an 18-year-old son and a five-year-old daughter.

He added that his brother was also an entrepreneur who had started his own maintenance company.

Miguel Luna, a 49-year-old father of three from El Salvador who has called Maryland home for 19 years, is also among the six people missing.

Mum and two daughters killed in tragic motorway crash 'heading home for Easter' - The Mirror

A mum and her two daughters killed in a tragic motorway crash have been named.

Una Bowden and her two young daughters, Ciara and Saoirse, were named locally, after they were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash after the vehicle they were in crashed head on with an articulated fuel lorry on the N17 at Castlegar, Co Mayo, on Monday afternoon. Mrs Bowden, from Moycullen, Co Galway, may have been heading towards her home of Donegal for the Easter holidays at the time of the crash, Irish Mirror reports.

Her husband, David, was abroad at the time of the crash but has since been informed. The couple ran a safari business together offering tours of national parks in Zambia, while Mr Bowden also works as a project manager with the United Nations.

Emergency services were called just before 2pm to the scene after Mrs Bowden's car crashed head on with the lorry. The lorry driver suffered injuries which were not life-threatening.

Neighbours paid tribute to the "wonderful family" with "the most beautiful children" who had lived in Moycullen for a number of years, and had recently moved into a new home just days earlier. Eldest daughter Ciara had been reportedly due to take part in an under-14s basketball tournament on Easter Monday which has since been cancelled out of respect.

Her sister, Saoirse, meanwhile was described as a talented Irish dancer. Father Peter Gannon, a local priest, said the community had been devastated by the news.

“It’s a shock for the community. Everyone is just devastated again to hear of more fatalities. In the area we’re not alien to fatalities like that unfortunately,” he said. “It’s nothing great to claim for any community. It’s horrendous. Our thoughts on this Holy week are with the family who now have to carry a horrendous cross.”

The horrific collision on N17 was the second in just over two weeks on the same kilometre stretch of road, after a woman and her elderly mother were involved in a three-vehicle crash on March 11. Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the accident or those who may have dash-cam footage to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact Claremorris Garda Station on 094 9372080, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

Germany Flixbus crash: At least five killed as coach veers off highway - Al Jazeera English

‘Numerous’ people injured after a bus travelling from Berlin, Germany to Zurich, Switzerland drives off the A9 motorway.

At least five people have been killed when a bus travelling from Berlin to Switzerland veered off a highway in eastern Germany and ended up on its side, police say.

“Numerous” others were injured in the incident on the A9 motorway near Leipzig about 9:45am (08:45 GMT) on Wednesday, police in the state of Saxony said on the social media platform X.

The A9 is an important north-south motorway linking the German capital to Munich. It was closed in both directions after the crash.

It was not immediately clear why the bus, which was operated by Flixbus and was en route to Zurich, went off the road. Rescue helicopters and ambulances were at the scene.

Flixbus said 53 passengers and two drivers were on board, the German Press Agency dpa reported.

The company said it was working closely with local authorities and rescue services and would do everything to clear up the cause of the accident quickly.

At the Deaconess Hospital in Leipzig, the emergency department was alerted, and operating theatres and diagnostic rooms were being prepared and kept on standby, a spokesperson said.

Middle East crisis live: Israel intensifies strikes on southern Gaza - The Guardian

The southern Gaza Strip came under intense Israeli bombardment overnight, despite international pressure for an immediate ceasefire in the Palestinian territory where famine is looming.

A report by the news agency, Agence France-Presse (AFP), said that a fireball had lit up the night sky in the southern city of Rafah, the last remaining urban centre in Gaza not to have been attacked by Israeli ground forces. About 1.5 million people are crammed in the area, many having fled south towards the border with Egypt.

According to AFP, the sound of explosions was also heard and smoke was seen rising in Gaza City in the north, where Israeli troops have been attacking the city’s largest hospital for more than a week.

Smoke billows after an Israeli bombardment in Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip, on Wednesday.

Israeli forces have also surrounded two hospitals in Khan Younis, where the health ministry said 12 people, including some children, were killed in an Israeli strike on a camp for the displaced.

The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza said early on Wednesday that 66 people had been killed overnight, including three killed in Israeli airstrikes in and around Rafah.

According to AFP, the Palestinian Red Crescent warned that thousands were trapped in the Nasser hospital in Khan Younis and “their lives are in danger”.

The fighting went on unabated two days after the UN security council passed its first resolution calling for an “immediate ceasefire” and urging the release of the roughly 130 hostages Israel says remain in Gaza, including 34 captives who are presumed dead.

The Israeli prime minister’s handling of relations with the Biden administration, which led the US on Monday to decline to veto a ceasefire resolution at the UN security council, has been greeted by sharp criticism by Israeli commentators.

After the US abstention, prominent columnists across the Israeli media condemned Benjamin Netanyahu’s growing friction with the US president, Joe Biden.

While Netanyahu, who has faced plummeting public approval ratings since Hamas’s surprise 7 October attack on southern Israel, has long been a target for a large section of Israel’s commentariat, the tone in some quarters after the rare US abstention in the security council bordered on derision and contempt.

Driving the sentiment is the vivid awareness within Israeli society of the huge importance of the US-Israeli relationship in terms of financial aid, arms sales and Washington’s diplomatic support, including its frequently used veto on Israel’s behalf on the security council.

You can read Peter Beaumont’s full piece here:

Here are some of the latest images on the newswires after the southern Gaza Strip came under intense Israeli bombardment overnight:

Lebanon’s Hezbollah said it launched dozens of rockets at Kiryet Shmona, an Israeli town over the border, early on Wednesday in response to deadly Israeli strikes on the village of Hebbariyeh in southern Lebanon a day earlier, reports Reuters.

Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah have been trading fire across the border since the Israel-Hamas war erupted in Gaza. Both sides have said they do not want all-out war and are open to a diplomatic process but strikes, have picked up this week after a lull in cross-border shelling.

At least seven people were killed in the Israeli strikes on Hebbariyeh, two Lebanese security sources told Reuters. The Israeli strikes appeared to be aimed at the Islamist group’s emergency and relief centre in the village, the sources said.

There was no immediate reaction from Israel to the reported Hezbollah strikes on Wednesday or detail of any casualties or damage, say Reuters.

Hezbollah earlier on Wednesday condemned the strikes on Habbariyeh. Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon had already killed more than a half dozen medical personnel and rescue workers, according to Lebanon’s health ministry.

On Tuesday, Israeli airstrikes near two towns in northeast Lebanon killed three Hezbollah militants, the group posted on Telegram. Israel confirmed those strikes.

Parliamentary pressure is building on the UK government to ban arms sales to Israel, amid signs that Israel intends to ignore the UN security council resolution passed this week calling on all sides to commit to a ceasefire.

A letter signed by more than 130 parliamentarians to the foreign secretary, David Cameron, highlights action taken by other countries, most recently Canada, which last week announced it would halt all arms exports to Israel.

Ministers are already facing calls from the shadow foreign secretary, David Lammy, to publish the legal advice to ministers on whether there is a serious risk Israel is breaching international humanitarian law, something that would normally trigger a suspension of UK arms sales.

The letter, coordinated by the Labour MP Zarah Sultana, was signed by 107 MPs and 27 peers including the former Labour Middle East minister Peter Hain, the Scottish National party’s Westminster leader, Stephen Flynn, the former shadow minister Jess Phillips, the former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and the Conservative peer Nosheena Mobarik.

Hamas has asked donor countries to stop their airdrops after 12 people drowned trying to recover parachuted food aid from the sea off Gaza’s Mediterranean coast, reports AFP.

In a statement on Tuesday evening, Hamas called for “an immediate end to airdrop operations” and “the immediate and rapid opening of land crossings”.

Hamas and the Swiss-based Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor also said another six people were killed in stampedes trying to get aid.

“People are dying just to get a can of tuna,” Gaza resident Mohamad al-Sabaawi told AFP, holding a can in his hand after a scramble over an aid package.

Hamas has also demanded that Israel allow more aid trucks to enter the territory, which the UN has warned is on the brink of a “manmade famine” after nearly six months of fighting.

The UN children’s fund, Unicef, said vastly more aid must be rushed into Gaza by road rather than by air or sea to avert an “imminent famine”.

Unicef spokesperson James Elder said the necessary help was “a matter of kilometres away” in aid-filled trucks waiting across Gaza’s southern border with Egypt.

The US national security council said in a statement it would continue trying to get aid in by road, but also said it would continue airdrops, reports AFP.

AFPTV footage showed crowds rushing towards aid packages on Tuesday being dropped by parachute from planes sent by Jordan, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Germany.

It has just gone 9am in Gaza and Tel Aviv. This is our latest Guardian live blog on the Israel-Gaza war and the wider Middle East crisis.

Israeli forces have also surrounded two hospitals in Khan Younis, where the health ministry said 12 people, including some children, were killed in an Israeli strike on a camp for the displaced.

More on that in a moment but first, here is a summary of the latest developments:

  • Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant said he told the US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, that “only a decisive victory will bring to an end of this war”. Gallant, whose Washington talks went ahead despite Israel’s cancellation of separate US talks on the planned Rafah offensive, added that Israel would not cease operating in Gaza until the return of all the hostages.

  • The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza said early Wednesday that 66 people had been killed overnight, including three killed in Israeli airstrikes in and around Rafah.

  • Israel has recalled its negotiating team from Qatar, ending immediate attempts to negotiate a ceasefire and hostage release deal with Hamas. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said: “Israel will not cave to Hamas’s delusional demands”, after Hamas rejected the latest deal offer. Netanyahu’s office said the Hamas position was “clear proof it is not interested in continuing talks, and a sad testament to the damage caused by the UN security council resolution”.

  • Late on Monday, Hamas had said Israel was not responding to its core demands of a “comprehensive ceasefire, an withdrawal from the [Gaza] strip, the return of displaced people and a real prisoner exchange”.

  • Israel’s foreign minister Israel Katz said Hamas had been emboldened to reject a deal by the UN security council vote, and had been sent the message: “You don’t have to hurry” because international pressure was being bought to bear on Israel.

  • The Biden administration’s policy on Gaza has been widely criticised as being in disarray with the defence secretary, Lloyd Austin, describing the situation as a “humanitarian catastrophe” the day after the state department declared Israel to be in compliance with international humanitarian law. “Gaza is suffering a humanitarian catastrophe and the situation is getting even worse,” Austin told Gallant in remarks in front of the press on Tuesday, calling for a significant expansion in aid deliveries by land. On the same day, the state department spokesperson, Matthew Miller, insisted the US had no reason to dispute Israeli assurances that it was complying with humanitarian law in Gaza.

  • Twelve people drowned at a Gaza beach trying to recover airdropped crates of aid that fell in water after their parachutes malfunctioned, Palestinian health authorities have said. Video of Monday’s airdrop showed crowds running towards the beach, in Beit Lahiya in north Gaza, as crates with parachutes floated down, then people standing deep in water and bodies being pulled on to the sand.

  • The UN humanitarian office urged Israel on Tuesday to revoke an apparent ban on food aid to north Gaza by agency Unrwa, saying people there were facing a “cruel death by famine”.

  • At least seven people were killed in an Israeli strike in Southern Lebanon, two security sources told Reuters early on Wednesday. The strike on Nabatieh appeared to target a Hezbollah emergency and relief centre in Hebbariyeh village in southern Lebanon, the sources said. On Tuesday, Israeli airstrikes near two towns in north-east Lebanon killed three Hezbollah militants, the group posted on Telegram. Israel confirmed the strikes.

  • Netanyahu has been heavily criticised inside Israel for his handling of crucial relations with the US after it declined to veto a ceasefire resolution at the UN security council. In the Hebrew-language newspaper Ma’ariv, Ben Caspit described the approach of the Israeli prime minister as “delusional”, “madness” and “terrifying”. The lead editorial in the left-leaning Israeli newspaper Haaretz described Netanyahu as “Israel’s agent of destruction” who “has become a burden for Israel”.

  • A released Israeli hostage recounted sexual assault at gunpoint during her captivity in Gaza, in the first such personal account. Amit Soussana, 40, was taken hostage on 7 October from kibbutz Kfar Aza, and told the New York Times she was attacked about two weeks later by the man guarding her after washing in the bathroom. The Times said her account was consistent with what she told two doctors and a social worker shortly after she was freed on 30 November. Soussana said she had decided to speak out now to raise awareness about the plight of the hostages still in Gaza. At least three released hostages have spoken publicly about incidents of sexual abuse against fellow captives.

  • A planned cabinet discussion in Israel on a proposed bill to extend compulsory military service to ultra-Orthodox students has been postponed at the last minute.

  • At least 32,414 Palestinians have now been killed in Israel’s military offensive on Gaza since 7 October, the Hamas-led Gaza health ministry said on Tuesday. On 7 October, Hamas killed about 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and took about 250 hostages. It has not been possible for journalists to independently verify all casualty figures being issued during the conflict.

  • Parliamentary pressure is building on the UK government to ban arms sales to Israel. A letter signed by more than 130 parliamentarians to the foreign secretary, David Cameron, highlights action taken by other countries, most recently Canada, which last week announced it would halt all arms exports to Israel.

Baltimore Key Bridge collapse updates: 'No hope' for missing men as search suspended - The Independent

Moment bridge in Baltimore collapses after ship collision

The search for six missing men, all construction workers who fell from the Patapsco River, following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge has been called off.

Coast Guard rear admiral Shannon Gilreath said there was no hope of finding the missing men alive due to the frigid water and the length of time elapsed since the accident.

The collapse occurred after a ship collided around with the bridge around 1am on Tuesday, in Baltimore, Maryland. Two people were rescued from the water, with one in critical condition and the other rejecting medical attention. Officials said eight men were originally unaccounted for.

“Based on the length of time that we’ve gone in this search the extensive search efforts that have gone into it, the water temperature, at this point we do not believe we are going to find these individuals alive,” the official said.

“The coast guard’s not going away, none of our partners are going away, but we’re just going to transition into a different phase.”

The cargo-carrying vessel, called the Dali, crashed into a pillar of the bridge approximately 30 minutes after setting sail on its 27-day journey to Sri Lanka.

Maryland Transportation Authority advises drivers to use alternate routes in wake of bridge collapse

About 30,000 cars crossed the Francis Scott Key bridge every day. Now, the state transportation authority is urging commuters to use alternate routes.

Drivers are being told to avoid the I-695 southeast corridor. The I-695 outer loop is closed at MD 10 (exit 2), the agency said. The inner loop is closed at MD 157 Peninsula Exp (exit 43). Drivers should use I-95 or I-895 alternate routes.

Over 1,000 US army engineers pressed into action

More than 1,000 members of the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) have been pressed into action to assist in the aftermath of the collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge.

The USACE yesterday said the team included engineering, construction, contracting and operations specialists, who would work with local, state and federal agencies to remove the fallen bridge to clear the shipping channel.

“Our emergency managers are closely monitoring the incident and coordinating with partner agencies for any potential support requests,” it said.

Why did the Baltimore bridge collapse so quickly?

A huge shipping vessel that collided with a major bridge in Baltimore has left numerous people missing and could cause significant economic and social disruption, experts say.

Many questions remain about the collision, including why the ship hit with the bridge in the first place. But many of them are structural: how was the ship able to reach the bridge, why was it not protected against such collisions, and why the bridge collapsed so quickly once the collision had happened.

Experts say it may be too early to say exactly what happened during the collision and the collapse that resulted. But they caution that bridges of this kind are specifically built with protections against such crashes – and that it may have required a huge impact to make the bridge fall in this way.

Andrew Griffin has more.

Cargo vessel was also involved in 2016 Belgium accident

The container vessel Dali was previously involved in another incident in the port of Antwerp, Belgium in 2016, hitting a quay as it tried to exit the North Sea container terminal.

An inspection in 2023 carried out in Chile found “propulsion and auxiliary machinery” deficiencies, according to data on the public Equasis website.

However, Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority said the vessel passed two separate foreign port inspections in June and September 2023.

It said a faulty fuel pressure gauge was rectified before the vessel departed the port following its June 2023 inspection.

The Dali’s journey before Baltimore Key Bridge collapse

A container ship was only minutes into its planned 27-day journey when it rammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, on Tuesday morning, sending the bridge and several people into the Patapsco River.

The Singaporean ship called the Dali was docked in Baltimore on Saturday in preparation for its trip to Colombo, Sri Lanka, according to Vessel Finder.

Carrying Maersk cargo, the nearly 1,000-foot-long (300 metre) container ship was expected to arrive in Sri Lanka on 22 April.

But around 1.30am ET on Tuesday, the ship hit the bridge causing it to collapse as construction workers were working on the bridge.

Search for six presumed dead to resume Wednesday

Search divers will return to the waters surrounding the twisted ruins of the Baltimore bridge on Wednesday to look for the remains of the six workers presumed dead.

Maryland state police and the US Coast Guard officials said diminished visibility and increasingly treacherous currents in the wreckage-strewn channel made continued search efforts on the river too risky to continue overnight.

Starting at 6am on Wednesday, “we’re hoping to put divers in the water and begin a more detailed search to do our very best to recover those six missing people,” state police colonel Roland Butler said.

“We do not believe that we’re going to find any of these individuals alive,” Coast Guard rear admiral Shannon Gilreath added.

Rescuers pulled two other workers from the water alive on Tuesday, and one of them was hospitalised.

Rescue ongoing as cars and people fall into water after ship strike causes Baltimore bridge to collapse - Sky News

A major bridge has collapsed in the US city of Baltimore after it was hit by a cargo ship.

Footage shows a large section of the 1.6-mile-long Francis Scott Key Bridge falling into the Patapsco River, following the collision at around 1.30am local time (5.30am UK time).

Vehicles can be seen in the video falling from the bridge.

Six people remain unaccounted for after two people were rescued from the water.

One of those rescued was in a "very serious condition" and is receiving treatment in hospital while the other was not injured.

According to officials, the ship had issued a mayday call to authorities that it had lost power before the collision. They later said it had lost propulsion and had dropped its anchors before the crash.

'We've not seen evidence of a terror attack'

In an update on Tuesday afternoon, Wes Moore, governor of Baltimore, and Paul Wiedefeld, secretary of the Maryland Transport Authority, said those still missing are believed to be construction workers who were on the bridge fixing potholes.

Bridge is 'major artery' for locals

The bridge, which is referred to locally as the Key Bridge, was described as a "major artery" for the area by resident Michael Brown.

"This is like an April Fools' joke right now," Mr Brown told Sky News's US partner network NBC.

"It [the bridge] is a major artery in the area not only for traffic but for the port. Hopefully, everyone is okay that is involved."

Mr Brown said he uses the bridge to visit family and its destruction is a "major issue" - but he noted the "emphasis should be on getting whoever is in the water out".

The Interstate 695 - the road which runs across the bridge - was closed and traffic rerouted by the Maryland Transport Authority.

Impact on trade

The Port of Baltimore, which oceangoing ships reach by going under the bridge, is the 11th largest in the US, meaning its closure will cause knock-on effects for the industry.

Richard Meade, editor of Lloyd's List - which provides news on the global maritime industry - said the collision will be a "significant and expensive" operation in terms of diverting marine traffic, the implications on trade and the rebuilding of the bridge itself.

According to data from MarineTraffic, around 40 ships remain inside the closed port, with a further 30 having signalled that the port was their destination.

Built in 1977, the Key Bridge is one of the longest continuous truss bridges in the world, according to the National Steel Bridge Alliance.

It was named after the writer of The Star-Spangled Banner, the national anthem of the US, which was penned after a War of 1812 US-UK battle in Baltimore harbour.

David MacKenzie, chair of engineering consultancy, COWIfonden, predicted that rebuilding the bridge will cost 10 times more than the approximate $60m (£47m) spent on building it in the first place.
