Kim Jong-un appears in public, North Korean state media report - BBC News

Kim Jong-un has appeared in public for the first time in 20 days, North Korean state media says.

KCNA news agency reports that the North Korean leader cut the ribbon at the opening of a fertiliser factory.

It adds that people at the factory "broke into thunderous cheers of hurrah" when he appeared.

The reported appearance - his first since an event on state media on 12 April - comes amid global speculation over his health.

The latest reports from North Korean media could not be independently confirmed.

State media later released images that it said showed Mr Kim cutting a ribbon outside a factory.

Asked about Mr Kim's reported reappearance, US President Donald Trump told reporters that he didn't want to comment yet.

What does the state media report say?

According to Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Mr Kim was accompanied by several senior North Korean officials, including his sister Kim Yo Jong.

The North Korean leader cut a ribbon at a ceremony at the plant, in a region north of Pyongyang, and people who were attending the event "burst into thunderous cheers of 'hurrah!' for the Supreme Leader who is commanding the all-people general march for accomplishing the great cause of prosperity", KCNA says.

Mr Kim said he was satisfied with the factory's production system, and praised it for contributing to the progress of the country's chemical industry and food production, the state news agency adds.

What started speculation about his health?

Speculation about Mr Kim's health began after he missed the birth anniversary celebrations of his grandfather, state founder Kim Il Sung on 15 April.

The anniversary is one of the biggest events in the North Korean calendar, and Mr Kim usually marks it by visiting the mausoleum where his grandfather lies. Mr Kim had never missed this event.

Claims about Mr Kim's ill-health then surfaced in a report for a website run by North Korean defectors.

An anonymous source told the Daily NK that they understood he had been struggling with cardiovascular problems since last August "but it worsened after repeated visits to Mount Paektu".

This led to a chain of reporting by international media on a single-sourced story.

News agencies then began to run with that claim, and it was all they had until some reports emerged that intelligence agencies in South Korea and the US were monitoring the claim.

But then came a more sensational headline in US media that the North Korean leader was in a critical condition after heart surgery.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo appeared to stoke the rumours on 29 April, by saying US officials "hadn't seen" Mr Kim recently.

However, a statement from the South Korean government, and sources at Chinese intelligence - speaking to the Reuters news agency - said this was not true.

Has Kim Jong-un disappeared before?

Yes. Mr Kim went missing for 40 days in September 2014, after attending a concert. He reappeared in mid-October, using a cane.

State media never explained where he had been. But South Korea's intelligence agency said he probably had an operation on his left ankle stemming from problems with a cyst.

Coronavirus: Ireland announces five-stage exit plan from May to August - Sky News

Ireland is extending its lockdown but easing some of the restrictions to allow people to travel further for exercise and let over-70s leave their homes.

The easing of restrictions will happen in five phases that begin on 18 May and will take until 10 August to complete.

The country's prime minister, Leo Varadkar, said the nation can only move from one phase into the next if coronavirus remains under control - if not, they will have to move back a phase.

The suspect pleaded guilty and is to face 'a significant prison term' according to police

And he added that in spite of restrictions being eased, there will be a long-term need for physical distancing until a vaccine for COVID-19 is available.

In the first phase, some shops will reopen and some sports will restart. People will also be allowed to meet in small groups.

Schools will re-open in September.

Mr Varadkar said all the personal stories of loss and hardship had formed a "tapestry of struggle and sacrifice and sorrow.

More from Covid-19

"It has been worthwhile, it is working, so let's finish what we started," said the Taoiseach.

Mr Varadkar said 70% of people diagnosed with the virus had made a full recovery. He said the figure would have been so much lower if the health service had been overwhelmed.

Sky's Ireland correspondent, Stephen Murphy, said the announcement did not come as a surprise.

Mr Varadkar and his officials, he explained, "had repeatedly said Ireland's infection and death rates had not sufficiently reduced to merit a lifting of the country's restrictions next Tuesday.

"So a weary public will not be too surprised to learn they face a further two weeks of mostly staying at home, the goalposts shifting from 5 May to 18 May.

"The government insists that by and large, the Irish people have been respecting the guidelines, although they have warned against complacency.

"The Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan last week produced GPS tracking and even seismic data showing an increase in the movement of people and traffic.

"I write this outside Government Buildings [in Dublin], where there are noticeably more cars and pedestrians passing by than in previous weeks.

"But at least the Irish public has some kind of roadmap to recovery now. Five phases to normality, which should come when schools and colleges reopen in September or October.

"Many questions persist. None could be put to the Taoiseach today, as he chose to deliver the news in a televised address, taking no questions from reporters camped outside the gates," Stephen Murphy said.

Thirty-four more people who were diagnosed with coronavirus have died in Ireland, the country's department of health said.

A total of 1,265 covid-19-related deaths have been recorded there.

There have also been 221 more cases of the coronavirus diagnosed, bringing the number of confirmed cases to 20,833.

Coronavirus: China's state media claims Trump 'publicly lying' - Daily Mail

'Why is the American public so easily fooled?' Beijing's state media chief claims Trump is 'publicly lying about China' to cover his 'failure' to contain coronavirus

  • Hu Xijin, the editor-in-chief of the Global Times, attacked Trump in a column
  • He claimed Trump dodged his responsibility in the outbreak by 'publicly lying'
  • Hu is one of the frontmen of China's media propaganda campaigns to the West
  • Trump said yesterday he had seen evidence the virus came from a Wuhan lab
  • China and the US have been locking horns in a diplomatic dispute over the virus
  • Here’s how to help people impacted by Covid-19

The editor-in-chief of a Chinese state-run newspaper has launched an astonishing attack on Donald Trump, accusing the US president of 'publicly lying about China'.

Hu Xijin, the outspoken head of Communist propaganda outlet the Global Times, branded the American public as being 'easily fooled' because, as he said, Trump had managed to 'boost himself in the US and shirk his responsibility for failing to fight the epidemic'.

Hu's explosive criticism comes after Trump claimed to have seen evidence that the virus started in a virology laboratory in Wuhan and threatened new tariffs on China.

Beijing insists the WHO has found no evidence that the novel coronavirus was man-made.

Hu, 60, has been one of the frontmen of China's media propaganda campaigns to the West.

His newspaper dishes out critiques towards the Trump administration nearly every day amid the global outbreak.

Hu himself is an avid user of Twitter, one of the many Western social media platforms banned in China due to their uncensored nature.

The editor sharpened his rhetoric against Trump in his latest op-ed published today.

He first hailed Beijing for making 'right decisions' in its handling of the outbreak and then expressed his 'surprise' at Washington's 'failure'.

He wrote: 'Isn't the US a democratic society? How come American lives are so much "cheaper" than Chinese lives?

'China would not accept high death tolls from the epidemic, but in the US 1,000 to 2,000 people die every day. US President Donald Trump really doesn't seem to be taking people's lives seriously – all for the sake of an election.'

The US has become the country worst-hit by the deadly disease. More than 63,000 Americans have died, and over one million are now infected.

China has reported just 4,633 deaths and 82,874 confirmed cases. These figures, however, have sparked wide-spread doubts, with critics and politicians accusing the Communist party of fudging numbers to conceal its real losses.

Hu admitted that 'some Chinese experts made some misjudgments at the early stage of the outbreak' before quickly pointing his finger at Trump, saying that the US President 'had repeatedly downplayed the risk of the outbreak and brushed aside warnings'.

He continued: 'Then there is the fact that Trump can boost himself in the US and shirk his responsibility for failing to fight the epidemic by publicly lying about China.

'Why is the American public so easily fooled?'

Despite bragging about his great relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the pandemic, Donald Trump yesterday threatened more sanctions against Beijing. The two leaders are pictured shaking hands during a meeting at the G20 Summit in Osaka in 2019

Hu concluded his column by urging the Chinese public to stay alert to prevent another outbreak – but not without highlighting America's 'poor' performance.

He said: 'Although the US has done very poorly in its fight against the epidemic, [the epidemic's] endurance is unmatched.

'If the outbreak goes on like this for a few years, and the US keeps losing a lot of people, that country will probably still be able to adapt to the situation.

'But imagine if something similar happened in China; could Chinese society accept it?'

Beijing and Washington have been locking horns in a tit-for-tat diplomatic dispute over the COVID-19 pandemic.

The US accuses China of covering up the outbreak, hiding its real origin and taking advantage of the crisis to push its territorial ambitions.

China accuses the US of carrying out 'smear campaigns' and avoiding its responsibilities in containing the disease. A spokesperson has also suggested that the virus might have been brought to Wuhan by US troops.

Trump insisted that he had seen evidence that the virus originated in an institute in Wuhan. Shi Zhengli (pictured in 2017), a lead researcher at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, said she 'guaranteed with her own life' that the outbreak was not related to her workplace

Trump yesterday made the explosive charge that the coronavirus - which has killed more than 233,000 worldwide and wreaked havoc on the global economy - might have been created in a Chinese lab.

He insisted that he had seen evidence that the virus originated in an institute in Wuhan. He also warned that he could impose tariffs of $1trillion on China in retribution for the pandemic.

Trump suggested the federal government was exploring ways to punish China for triggering the outbreak by imposing tariffs, but he stopped short of saying he would refuse to pay back US debts.

Trump's announcement came hours after US intelligence agencies concluded that the new coronavirus was 'not man-made or genetically modified'.

The agencies said they were still examining whether the origins of the pandemic had anything to do with infected animals or an accident at the Chinese lab.

Geng Shuang, a spokesperson at the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, yesterday denied the allegation that the virus came from the Wuhan lab. He called the claim 'rumour' at the daily press briefing.

'There is not any evidence to show that the novel coronavirus was artificially modified. The claim that the virus was synthesised by the Wuhan Institute of Virology is baseless and spun out of thin air,' Geng said.

He highlighted once more that the origin of the virus was a 'scientific problem' before urging American politicians to 'stop shifting their responsibilities on China and diverting the world's attention'.

'[US politicians' should spend their time and energy on controlling their own country's epidemic,' he concluded.

Why did China build a virus lab in Wuhan?

A worker is seen inside the P4 laboratory at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in Wuhan on February 23, 2017

A worker is seen inside the P4 laboratory at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in Wuhan on February 23, 2017

Chinese officials decided to build the Wuhan Institute of Virology after the country was ravaged by an outbreak of SARS in 2002 and 2003.

SARS, another kind of coronavirus, killed 775 people and infected more than 8,000 globally in an epidemic that lasted about eight months.

It took the Chinese 15 years to fully complete the project, which cost a total of 300million yuan (£34million). The French helped design the building.

Its crown jewel is a four-storey lab with the highest biosafety level of P4.

It's the most advanced laboratory of its type in China.

Construction of the lab was finished in 2015 and it officially opened on January 5, 2018, after passing various safety inspections.

Describing the significance of the P4 lab, China Youth Online billed it as the 'aircraft carrier of China's virology'. The state-run newspaper said it 'is capable of researching the deadliest pathogens'.

One researcher, Zhou Peng, told state news agency Xinhua in 2018: 'We are proud to say that we are already at the forefront in the field of studying the immunity mechanism of bats, which carry viruses for a long time.

'Bats carry viruses but are not infected [by them]. [They] provide hope for mankind to study how to fight viruses.'

Kim Jong-un dead claims erupt after 'failed missile test wounds North Korean leader' - Express.co.uk

Kim Jong-un's death remains unconfirmed from North Korea or any Government from around the world. However, Asia analyst Gordon Chang addressed a rumour he claimed had circumstantial evidence supporting it. While speaking to Fox News, Mr Chang claimed the North Korean dictator could have been wounded or killed on April 14.

He explained that a missile launch went ahead on this date, and North Korea's odd decision to break protocol was cause for concern.

Mr Chang wrote: "There is another report which has some circumstantial evidence to support it.

"That is that there was an accident on April 14th when North Korea launched a barrage of cruise missiles.

"Kim was on-scene and was wounded."

DON'T MISS: Kim Jong-un 'alive and well' claim REJECTED by expert

Mr Chang argued that North Korea's breaking of pattern following April 14 could support the idea the dictator was injured or killed.

Mr Chang continued: "There is one important thing about this.

"That missile test, that did in fact occur, could not have gone forward if Kim did not authorise it.

"Kim Jong-un has been on sight for virtually every missile test in North Korea during his reign.

"We know that Kim Jong-un did not show up for the April 15th day of the Sun celebration.

"This is the celebration that commemorates the birth of regime founder Kim IL-sung, his grandfather.

"Kim has not missed any Day of the Sun celebrations."
