Vladimir Putin's savage EU swipe exposed: 'You're so weak!' - Express.co.uk

Putin has had an ominously tense relationship with the EU in recent years, steadily chipping away at the thawing of relations seen after the fall of the Berlin Wall and appearing to take an increasingly anti-Western approach. Moscow has aligned itself with the likes of Syria’s Bashar al-Assad, Iran’s Hassan Rouhani and China’s Xi Jinping as the international state of play appears increasingly divided. It has left Brussels in a precarious position, not least since Britain’s exit from the EU after the 2016 referendum and the election of Donald Trump as US President highlights and exaggerates that split even further.

It has arguably emboldened Putin who, despite having to deal with sanctions after the Crimea crisis of 2014, continues to be a thorn in the side of the bloc.

Appearing on World Order 2018, an Amazon Prime documentary by TV host Vladimir Solovjev, the Russian President discussed topics rarely answered by world leaders.

During an interview with Mr Solovjev about the destabilisation of eastern Ukraine and the EU's measures in response to the annexation of Crimea, Putin derided attempts made by Brussels to weaken Russia.

When asked whether the bloc will lift sanctions against Moscow over the Ukraine crisis, the Russian head dismissed the question, saying: “We did not introduce them.

“You see when they are overtaken with internal problems of some serious character they become dependent on these processes and such countries become unpredictable.

“It affects their reliability.

“So are they independent or dependent? And on whom they depend?”

Ukraine and Russia have been at odds since the Crimea crisis of 2014.

However, since then, Putin seems to have found an unlikely ally in French President Emmanuel Macron.

Macron has repeatedly referred to the “death of NATO” in recent addresses and argued against the idea of seeing Russia as a threat.

In a joint news conference in Paris alongside NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg last year, he said: “Is our enemy today Russia? Or China?

“Is it the goal of NATO to designate them as enemies? I don’t believe so.”

US Vice-President Mike Pence's aide tests positive for coronavirus - BBC News

A top aide to US Vice-President Mike Pence has tested positive for Covid-19 one day after another White House staff member was diagnosed with the virus.

Mr Pence's press secretary Katie Miller tested positive on Friday, a day after President Donald Trump's valet.

The White House has begun daily testing for Mr Pence and Mr Trump, and has claimed to be taking "every single precaution to protect the president".

The US death toll is now over 76,000 and states are beginning to reopen.

Six members of Mr Pence's team were abruptly taken off his plane, Air Force 2, after it was held on the tarmac outside Washington, DC for over an hour on Friday, as he prepared to travel to Iowa to meet religious leaders.

The staff members had had recent contact with Mrs Miller, according to an unnamed US official cited in the media pool report. The president and vice-president had not.

Mrs Miller is the wife of Trump aide Stephen Miller.

During a meeting with Republicans at the White House, Mr Trump told reporters: "She's a wonderful young woman, Katie."

"She tested very good for a long period of time and then all of a sudden today she tested positive."

When asked about the possibility of an outbreak in the White House, Mr Trump told reporters: "All you can do is take precautions and do the best you can."

He also said he was correct not to wear a mask while visiting the World War II memorial in Washington for VE Day, because the elderly veterans there with him were "far away".

"Plus the wind was blowing so hard and such a direction that if the plague ever reached them, I'd be very surprised," he added.

Giving the impression it's under control

BBC White House correspondent Tara McKelvey

The president has made it clear he does not like the way that a mask looks on him.

He said last month that he believes wearing a mask would not make a good impression on world leaders and others he meets.

"As I greet presidents, prime ministers, dictators, kings, queens ... I don't see it for myself, I just don't," Trump told a journalist.

For some, the president's refusal to wear a mask is more than a question of style. It is a political statement.

Trump and the other officials at the White House want to give people the impression that the health crisis is under control and that soon the economy will be on back on track.

Earlier on Friday, Mr Trump told Fox and Friends that his valets have already started wearing masks.

A day earlier it emerged that a member of the US Navy who serves the president's food had tested positive for coronavirus.

The president said that the individual had tested negative four days beforehand.

"This is why testing's not necessarily the answer," he said, though he noted staff would now be tested daily. "Testing only goes so far."

Later, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany defended the measures taken by the White House to keep officials safe.

"We've taken every single precaution to protect the president," Ms McEnany said.

Mr Trump's chief of staff, Mark Meadows, also told reporters: "This is the safest place you can come to."

On Friday, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first saliva test collection kit for home use.

The government agency has been criticised for allowing the market to become flooded with test kits that sometimes show false results.

According to the White House coronavirus task force, the US is testing about 248,000 people per day and has tested around 8.1m people so far.

Georgia prosecutor ‘BLOCKED arrest of ex-cop friend and son’ over murder of black jogger Ahmaud Arbery - The Sun

A GEORGIA district attorney allegedly blocked police from arresting a white father and son accused of murdering an unarmed black jogger because she was pals with one of them.

Ex-cop Gregory McMichael, 64, and his son Travis McMichael, 34, were charged on Thursday with murder and aggravated assault - more than two months after the death of Ahmaud Arbery, 25.

The investigation into the killing, which took place on February 23, appeared stalled until this week, when a video of the shooting was leaked and shared widely on social media, prompting national outrage.

The McMichaels made their first court appearance on Friday via a video link from inside the Glynn County jail after they were charged.

A judge ruled that bond on both charges would have to be set by a superior court judge.

Police investigating the scene of the fatal shooting told Brunswick District Attorney Jackie Johnson's office they had cause to arrest the father and son.

But two Glynn County commissioners have alleged that Johnson told them at the time not to make the arrests.

It has transpired that murder suspect Gregory McMichael had worked as an investigator in her office until his retirement in 2019.

She shut them down to protect her friend McMichael

Glynn County Commissioner Allen Booker

Glynn County Commissioner Allen Booker told The Atlanta Journal Constitution: "The police at the scene went to her, saying they were ready to arrest both of them.

"These were the police at the scene who had done the investigation.

"She shut them down to protect her friend McMichael."

Commissioner Peter Murphy, who said he also spoke directly to Glynn County police about the incident, added: "They were told not to make the arrest."

Johnson has not commented on the allegation.

District Attorney George Barnhill also revealed Friday that Gregory McMichael had "helped with the previous prosecution" of Arbery while he was an investigator in the DA's office.

The arrests this week of the McMichaels at their at their $280,000 two-bed property in Brunswick only came after the video, recorded by McMichael's neighbour William Bryan, was leaked.

The public outrage prompted Georgia Bureau of Investigations to get involved and arrests were made.

At a press conference on Friday, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation described how it only took 36 hours to find "probable" cause for felony murder charges against the McMichaels, and would not rule out charging Bryan.

Earlier President Donald Trump spoke out about the "very disturbing" footage of the deadly shooting and said law enforcement was "gonna do what's right".

His daughter Ivanka also tweeted about "why it seemingly took months, the release of a video and corresponding public outrage to catalyse action'”.

Arbery was jogging in February when the two men confronted him before he was shot.

At the time Gregory told detectives they believed Arbery was involved in "recent home burglaries," which is why they followed him.

But there is no evidence to suggest that Arbery was responsible for any burglaries in the area, the Glynn County Police Department said.

On Friday, protesters angered by Arbery's death gathered outside the courthouse in Brunswick — what would have been the victim's 26th birthday.

A furious crowd of several hundred people, most wearing masks, sang Happy Birthday in his honor outside the Glynn County Courthouse.

Many expressed frustration at the long wait before any arrests were made.

NFL stars Tom Brady and Anquan Boldin were among dozens of prominent players and coaches who called for a federal investigation into the slaying.

Speaking about the arrests, S. Lee Merritt, an attorney representing Arbery's parents, described the arrests as a "huge, huge step but it's only a first step on a very long road to justice."

"A case like this breeds mistrust within the community," he said.

"It hurts the people involved, it hurts the law enforcement community, the prosecutorial community, the black community, everyone."

Ahmaud Arbery: Trump laments 'heart-breaking' killing - BBC News

President Donald Trump has called the fatal shooting of Ahmaud Arbery, an unarmed black man in the US state of Georgia, a "very disturbing situation".

Mr Arbery was jogging in February when Gregory McMichael and his son Travis, who are white, confronted him. They now face murder and assault charges.

"My heart goes out to the parents and the family and friends," Mr Trump told Fox News on Friday.

The case drew national attention when video of the death emerged on Tuesday.

Police had not charged the McMichaels for more than two months, but the pair were detained on Thursday by the state bureau of investigation.

Gregory McMichael, 64, and Travis McMichael, 34, are in the custody of the Glynn County Sheriff's Department, officials said on Friday.

Both were charged with felony murder and aggravated assault.

State investigators earlier said the father and son had followed Mr Arbery and confronted him with two firearms, and the younger McMichael shot and killed him.

Mr Arbery would have turned 26 on Friday. Rallies have taken place outside of courthouses in Glynn County and in neighbouring Jacksonville, Florida.

Online, supporters of Mr Arbery have been using the hashtag #IRunWithMaud, sharing photos and running 2.23 miles (3.6km) in remembrance of the day he died, 23 February.

What did Trump say?

Speaking on the Fox & Friends programme on Friday morning, the president said he had seen the footage, which he described as "troubling" to anyone who watched it.

Mr Trump said the state's governor and law enforcement would be looking at the case "very strongly".

When asked about the racial issues at play in the case, the president said "justice getting done is the thing that solves that problem".

"But it's a heart-breaking thing."

Ivanka Trump, the president's daughter and a White House adviser, has also weighed in, asking in a tweet "why it seemingly took months, the release of a video and corresponding public outrage to catalyse action".

At a briefing later, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany was asked whether the US Department of Justice would get involved in the case. Ms McEnany did not rule out the possibility.

A justice department spokesperson told the BBC the FBI is assisting with the investigation.

"As is standard protocol we look forward to working with them should information come to light of a potential federal violation," said the statement.

What has the family said?

"I just want justice for my son," Mr Arbery's father, Marcus, told CNN on Friday. He said the arrest was a "relief" for the family, and described his son's killing as a "lynching".

"He was a very good young man," Mr Arbery said of his son. "His heart was just bigger than life."

Benjamin Crump, a lawyer for the family, asked for the same justice for Mr Arbery as if the situations were reversed and Mr Arbery and his father had attacked an unarmed white man.

"We know beyond a shadow of a doubt they would've been arrested on day one," Mr Crump said, adding that he does not trust the local police department.

He called for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to investigate the officers who did not arrest the McMichaels.

"Either they were incompetent or it was intentional."

What's the status of the investigation?

GBI Director Vic Reynolds told reporters at a news conference on Friday that the McMichaels had been taken into custody without incident.

He said the investigation is ongoing. The individual who filmed the video - another local man - is also under investigation.

When asked about the previous police investigation into the case, Mr Reynolds said he could not comment, but that it had "gotten to a good point".

Mr Reynolds also noted that his agents were able to secure warrants for murder within 36 hours.

"I think that speaks volumes for itself in that the probable cause was clear to our agents very quickly."

He said in a "perfect world" his agency would have been involved back in February, but by the end of the case, "every stone will be turned over, I promise you".

On Tuesday, Atlantic Circuit District Attorney Tom Durden ruled a grand jury should consider the case and accepted Governor Brian Kemp's offer to have the GBI investigate.

Mr Durden is the third prosecutor involved, as two local district attorneys eventually recused themselves due to professional connections to Gregory McMichael, who is a former police detective.

Two county commissioners have told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that in February, District Attorney Jackie Johnson did not allow police to arrest the McMichaels immediately after the shooting.

"The police at the scene went to her, saying they were ready to arrest both of them," Commissioner Allen Booker said. He claimed Ms Johnson "shut them down to protect her friend [Gregory] McMichael".

Her office has not commented to local media, and did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the BBC.

The second attorney had told police he believed the father and son had used citizen's arrest rights in confronting Mr Arbery.

The shooting has led to a wave of outrage from national figures, including presidential candidate Joe Biden and basketball star LeBron James.

Mr Biden said Mr Arbery had been "shot down in cold blood" and "essentially lynched before our very eyes".

Mr James tweeted: "We're literally hunted EVERYDAY/EVERYTIME we step foot outside the comfort of our homes!"

How did Arbery die?

Mr Arbery was out for a jog in the city of Brunswick early in the afternoon on 23 February - something his father said he did often.

Gregory McMichael told police he believed Mr Arbery resembled the suspect in a series of local break-ins.

Mr McMichael and his son armed themselves with a pistol and a shotgun and pursued Mr Arbery in a pickup truck in the Satilla Shores neighbourhood.

The elder Mr McMichael told police he asked Mr Arbery to stop and talk, and claims the 25-year-old attacked his son.

The 36-second clip appears to show the younger Mr McMichael firing a shotgun at point blank range at Mr Arbery and the victim falling to the street.
