Tory MP issues brutal swipe at Corbyn as Labour Party finally rejects 'communist tyranny' - Express

The chair of the Foreign Affairs committee delivered his scathing dig at Jeremy Corbyn as Parliament discussed China's proposed changes to autonomy in Hong Kong. Tom Tugendhat welcomed a statement from Dominic Raab insisting the UK will not accept attempts from Beijing to impose new security laws on the autonomous territory. But the Tory MP also took the chance to congratulate the Labour Party for their change of conduct since the departure of Mr Corbyn.

Mr Tungendhat said: "I hugely welcome the statement from my Right Honourable Friend, the Foreign Secretary.

"May I also say I welcome a noticeably different attitude from the Opposition frontbenchers.

"Standing up to Communist tyranny for the first time in a political generation.

"What we’re also seeing however in Hong Kong is a very, very different form of Government attempting to be imposed on the people there who have rights, agreed, in the Sino-British Joint Declaration."

Earlier in the session, Secretary Raab had said: "We don't oppose Hong Kong passing its own national security law, we do strongly oppose such an authoritarian law being imposed by China in breach of international law.

"We're not seeking to intervene in China's internal affairs, only to uphold China to its international commitments just as China expects of the United Kingdom.

"We don't seek to prevent China's rise, far from it, we welcome China as a leading member of the international community and we look to engage with China on everything from trade to climate change.

"And it is precisely because we recognise China's role in the world that we expect it to live up to the international obligations and the international responsibilities that come with it."

The Foreign Secretary also warned Beijing their proposed changes to security laws in Hong Kong is in direct violation with their own rules.

Mr Raab continued: ”To be very clear and specific about this, the imposition of national security legislation on Hong Kong by the government in Beijing rather than through Hong Kong's own institutions lies in direct conflict with Article 23 of China's own basic law.

“And it lies in direct conflict with China's international obligations freely assumed under the Joint Declaration."

He added: "There is time for China to reconsider, there is a moment for China to step back from the brink and respect Hong Kong's autonomy and respect China's own international obligations.

"If China continues down this current path, if it enacts this national security law, we will consider what further response we make, working with those international partners and others."

DON’T MISS

There is increasing anger across the British Government over how the Communist regime has treated Hong Kong and is now threatening Taiwan.

Speaking to the Sunday Express, a source said “don’t be surprised if we end up recognising Taiwan and joining others in defending it with military assets.”

Taiwan is currently not recognised internationally because of China opposition but continued interference in Hong Kong could spur the UK to take action.

Romford MP Andrew Rossendale, who is a member of the all parliamentary group for Taiwan, said: “The treatment of Taiwan over the years has been nothing short of disgraceful. Only Lady Thatcher stood up to it when she visited the country.

“We cannot let the Chinese communist regime attack and overwhelm Taiwan. It is a beacon of western democracy in that part of the world and we and our allies must defend it.”

George Floyd death: Trump's church visit shocks religious leaders - BBC News

Last night he held a Bible in front of St John's Episcopal Church, just across the road from the White House. Today, he'll visit the Shrine to St John Paul II, also in Washington DC.

But US President Donald Trump's signalling of religious affiliation has not been welcomed by a range of clerics as the nation struggles to manage the twin challenges of a pandemic and widespread political protest.

The Episcopal Bishop of Washington, the Right Reverend Mariann Budde, said: "The president just used a Bible, the most sacred text of the Judeo-Christian tradition, and one of the churches of my diocese, without permission, as a backdrop for a message antithetical to the teachings of Jesus."

James Martin, a Jesuit priest and consultant to the Vatican's communications department, tweeted: "Let me be clear. This is revolting. The Bible is not a prop. A church is not a photo op. Religion is not a political tool. God is not your plaything."

Rabbi Jack Moline, President of the Interfaith Alliance, said: "Seeing President Trump standing in front of St John's Episcopal Church while holding a Bible in response to calls for racial justice - right after using military force to clear peaceful protesters - is one of the most flagrant misuses of religion that I have ever seen."

President Trump does not belong to a particular congregation, only occasionally attends a service and has said many times that he does not like to ask God for forgiveness.

But while he may not consider church essential to his personal life, it may yet hold the keys to his political future.

In 2016, Mr Trump won 81% of white evangelical votes and exit polls found that white Catholics supported him over Hillary Clinton by 60% to 37%.

Mr Trump's status, as the champion of evangelical and conservative voters, can seem peculiar given his use of divisive rhetoric, his three marriages, accusations of sexual assault by dozens of women, the hush-money paid to a pornographic film actress, and the record of false statements made during his presidency - more than 18,000 according to the Poynter Institute's Politifact website.

But he has sealed a powerful bond with religious voters by embracing their political priorities and appointing two Supreme Court justices - Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch - and federal judges with their support.

This may explain why - though an irregular congregant himself - the president has repeatedly demanded the reopening of churches, saying, on 22 May, "If they don't do it, I will override the governors."

Religious conservatives appear to be the most solid core of Mr Trump's voter base, despite political unrest and the vast number of deaths from Covid-19.

According to the latest Pew Research Poll, 77% of white evangelical Protestants say he's doing a good job in handling the pandemic - down just 4 percentage points from three weeks ago.

But while one voting bloc remains faithful, the country at large is deeply divided. According to analysis by the website FiveThirtyEight, which collates all polling data, 43% of Americans agree with the president's handling of the coronavirus pandemic, while 53.4% disapprove.

Several religious leaders are hoping that Trump's visit to the shrine may encourage him to reflect on the words of then Pope John Paul II, delivered to the United Nations in 1995.

"The answer to the fear which darkens human existence at the end of the 20th Century," he said, "is the common effort to build the civilization of love."

Lough Mask: Body of boy, five, recovered - BBC News

The body of a five-year-old boy, who had been reported missing on Monday evening, has been recovered from Lough Mask.

The search took place on the west side of the lough near Toormakeady in County Mayo.

Gardaí (Irish police) from Castlebar had been searching for the boy. They were assisted by the Irish coastguard, Civil Defence, Lough Mask Water Rescue and local divers.

His body was found on Tuesday morning.

Irish national broadcaster RTÉ reported that child was from the local area and is understood to have fallen from a dinghy which may have drifted from the shoreline.

It is understood the boy's body was found at about 08:00 local time on Tuesday.

George Floyd death: 'This is why we are protesting' - BBC News

The death of George Floyd in police custody has sparked six days of protests in the US, many of which have turned violent and led to further accusations of excessive use of force by officers.

"I'm tired of being afraid," one protester said. These are some of the other reasons demonstrators across the country said they'd taken to the streets to protest.
