Joe Biden says he and Jill have tested NEGATIVE for COVID - Daily Mail

Joe Biden says he and Jill have tested NEGATIVE for COVID after Trump's bombshell diagnosis and says 'I hope this serves as a reminder: Wear a mask'

  • Joe Biden and Jill Biden tested negative for the coronavirus Friday
  • He is scheduled to go to Grand Rapids, Michigan
  • He was on stage with President Trump for 90 minutes without a mask on Tuesday during the presidential debate
  • Trump announced Thursday he and Melania tested positive for COVID

Democratic nominee Joe Biden tested negative for the coronavirus Friday on the heels of President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump testing positive.

Biden stood across the debate stage from Trump Tuesday night, but the two candidates never shook hands.

The Biden campaign sent out a statement from the candidate's doctor confirming both Biden and his wife Jill were tested for COVID-19 and the virus 'was not detected.'

'I am reporting this out in my capacity as both Vice President Biden and Dr. Biden’s primary care physician,' Dr. Kevin O’Connor said.

Biden also sent out a tweet announcing he and Jill tested negative.

'I’m happy to report that Jill and I have tested negative for COVID. Thank you to everyone for your messages of concern. I hope this serves as a reminder: wear a mask, keep social distance, and wash your hands,' Biden wrote.

Earlier Friday, Biden sent well wishes to the first family.

'Jill and I send our thoughts to President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for a swift recovery. We will continue to pray for the health and safety of the president and his family,' he wrote.

Biden is expected to travel to Grand Rapids, Michigan Friday.

Biden's campaign has been meticulous about having the candidate and people around him wear masks and social distance.

But the Democratic presidential nominee was on stage for 90 minutes without a mask with President Trump on Tuesday night. The two men were socially distanced but it's unclear if they had any interactions backstage.

The campaign was testing everyone who attended Tuesday's debate after the president's diagnosis, Politico reported Friday.

Trump adviser Hope Hicks tested positive on Wednesday but she traveled on Air Force One with the president to Cleveland for the debate and sees him on a daily basis. It's uncertain when she would have been infected.

The Biden campaign already asked one reporter - who was scheduled to travel with them but informed officials they had traveled with Trump to Minnesota on Wednesday - not to go.

All the attendees at the Cleveland debate were tested beforehand, while the former vice president's wife Jill Biden kept her mask on throughout, unlike some members of the Trump family. Melania Trump also wore a mask throughout, but removed her mask when she came onstage at the end of the face-off.

Biden, 77, is in the same high risk category as Trump due to age.

His running mate, California Sen. Kamala Harris, tested negative for the coronavirus Thursday, according to Reuters.

She also sent out a tweet Friday wishing the president and his family well.

'Doug and I join Joe Biden and Dr. Biden in wishing President Trump and the First Lady a full and speedy recovery. We’re keeping them and the entire Trump family in our thoughts,' Harris wrote.

During the debate, Trump mocked Biden for his mask wearing.

Joe Biden's running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, also tweeted well wishes to the president and first lady Friday morning

'I don't wear masks like him. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him without a mask. He could be speaking 200 feet away from someone and he shows up with the biggest mask I've ever seen,' he said.

The president also said of his packed gatherings, 'So far we've had no problem whatsoever.'

'If you could get the crowds, you'd do the same thing,' Trump told Biden.

Hicks, 31, is said to have first felt unwell returning from a rally in Minnesota on the president's plane Wednesday evening.

She was quarantined away from others on the plane and her diagnosis was confirmed Thursday, according to a report.

Trump cancelled his Friday plans to hold a rally in Florida in the wake of his diagnosis.

Biden was seen in public Thursday when he recorded his speech for the Al Smith dinner.

He wore a mask.

The former vice president has been critical of the Trump administration's response to the pandemic.

Trump Covid: US president has mild symptoms - White House - BBC News

US President Donald Trump has mild symptoms of Covid-19 after he and his wife Melania tested positive for the coronavirus, the White House says.

Mr Trump's chief of staff said the president was "on the job" and "in good spirits", adding that he expected him to make a quick recovery.

The news comes just over a month before presidential elections, where he will face Democratic challenger Joe Biden.

Mr Biden himself and his wife Jill tested negative on Friday.

"I hope this serves as a reminder," he tweeted after the result. "Wear a mask, keep social distance, and wash your hands."

Other close members of Mr Trump's family have tested negative.

Officials said the process of tracking all the president's contacts in recent days was ongoing, adding that Mr Trump was considering how he might address the nation or otherwise communicate with the American people on Friday.

On Thursday, the first couple said they intended to self-isolate after one of Mr Trump's closest aides, Hope Hicks, tested positive. Soon afterwards, they too received positive test results.

But there has been criticism of Mr Trump's decision to go to a fundraiser attended by dozens of people in New Jersey on Thursday, apparently when officials already knew about Ms Hicks's symptoms.

Ms Hicks, 31, travelled with Mr Trump on Air Force One to the first presidential TV debate with Mr Biden in Ohio on Tuesday. Some of Mr Trump's family members who attended the debate were seen not wearing masks.

Mr Trump has mostly spurned mask-wearing and has often been pictured not socially distanced with aides or others during official engagements.

The coronavirus has infected more than 7.2 million Americans, killing more than 200,000 of them.

What do we know about Trump's condition?

White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said Mr Trump was experiencing mild symptoms, but that he and Melania were "in good spirits". He said he was optimistic the president would make a speedy recovery.

He was on the job and would remain on the job, Mr Meadows added, saying updates on his health were expected later on Friday.

Earlier Mr Trump wrote on Twitter: "We will get through this together."

Melania Trump tweeted that she was looking forward to a speedy recovery.

"Thank you for the love you are sending our way. I have mild symptoms but overall feeling good," she said.

Mr Trump's physician, Dr Sean Conley, released a statement late on Thursday, saying the president and the first lady were "both well at this time, and they plan to remain at home within the White House during their convalescence".

According to Mr Trump's most recent physical examination earlier this year, he weighed 244lbs (110.7kg). This is considered to be obese for his height of 6ft 3ins.

But Dr Conley stated at the time that the president "remains healthy". Mr Trump will also have the best medical care available.

America's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says a person must self-isolate for 10 days after a positive test.

It is not clear how Mr Trump's positive test will affect arrangements for the second presidential debate, which is scheduled for 15 October in Miami, Florida.

Mr Trump is not the first world leader to have tested positive. Earlier this year, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro were infected. They both have since recovered, although Mr Johnson had to receive regular oxygen treatment to help his breathing during hospitalisation.

Contest has been fundamentally altered

The US presidential election has been turned on its head.

That sentence could have been written about any number of moments in a tumultuous year in American politics, but nothing quite like this has occurred this year, this decade, this century.

Just 32 days before the presidential election, Donald Trump has tested positive for Covid-19. Given his age, 74, he is in a high-risk category for complications from the disease. At the very least, he will have to quarantine while he is treated, meaning the US presidential contest - at least his side of it - has been fundamentally altered.

The initial implications are obvious. The president's rigorous campaign schedule - which included visits to Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Georgia, Florida and North Carolina in just the past week - is on indefinite hold.

Trump will certainly have surrogates on the trail for him, but given that he has relied heavily on his family and senior administration and campaign officials for such tasks in the past, and many of them may have to quarantine because of their own exposure to the virus, that campaign operation will be disrupted as well.

Who else has been tested?

Vice-President Mike Pence and his wife were tested on Friday morning, and the results were negative, Mr Pence's press secretary Devin O'Malley tweeted.

Later House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who would in theory take charge of government if both the president and vice-president were incapacitated, said she had been tested on Friday morning and had not yet received the results.

Ms Pelosi, a Democrat, said "continuity plans were in place" but she herself had not been contacted by the White House about this.

Other members of the Trump family, his daughter Ivanka, son Barron and son-in-law Jared Kushner have all tested negative.

Several White House officials have been infected previously and the White House tests aides and anyone else who comes into contact with the president daily.

How have the US and the world reacted?

In a tweet, US Vice-President Mike Pence and his wife Karen wished the presidential couple well:

In a tweet, Mr Biden and his wife Jill wished the first couple a swift recovery: "We will continue to pray for the health and safety of the president and his family," he said.

Boris Johnson wrote on Twitter: "My best wishes to President Trump and the First Lady. Hope they both have a speedy recovery from coronavirus."

Other world leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu, also sent messages of support to the couple.

Donald Trump has "mild symptoms" but is in "good spirits" after contracting coronavirus, a White House official has said.

The US president and his wife Melania are self-isolating after testing positive for COVID-19, just one month before the US election.

White House chief of staff Mark Meadows told reporters on Friday that the couple "remain in good spirits" but confirmed Mr Trump "does have mild symptoms".

"He continues to be, not only in good spirits, but very energetic," Mr Meadows said.

"I'm optimistic that he will have a quick and speedy recovery."

A White House official had earlier told NBC News that discussions are taking place about whether Mr Trump will address the American public later today.

Where has Trump been?

Messages of support were offered from world leaders and Mr Trump's election rival Joe Biden, who said he was sending his thoughts to Mr and Mrs Trump "for a swift recovery".

"We will continue to pray for the health and safety of the president and his family," Mr Biden said.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who spent time in intensive care with COVID-19 in April, said: "I think we all want to send our best wishes to the president and the first lady.

"I'm sure that they'll both stage a very strong recovery."

Russian President Vladimir Putin also expressed his "sincere support" to Mr and Mrs Trump "in this difficult moment," according to the Kremlin.

It said Mr Putin sent a message to the US president, which read: "I hope that your inherent vitality, good spirits and optimism will help you cope with the dangerous virus."

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she hoped Mr Trump's diagnosis might be a "learning experience" about the virus and warned against "brazen" behaviour that allowed "something like this to happen".

"Let us all pray for the president's health," she told MSNBC. "This is tragic, it is very sad."

Trump’s behaviour a 'brazen invitation'

Mr Trump is 74 years old and his health records earlier this year showed he is categorised as obese, putting him at higher risk of serious complications from the virus.

He is now expected to self-isolate for two weeks while facing treatment for the disease.

Mr Trump's physician Sean Conley said the president and first lady would remain at the White House during their period of isolation.

He said: "Rest assured I expect the president to continue carrying out his duties without disruption while recovering, and I will keep you updated on any future developments."

Writing on Twitter, Mrs Trump said: "As too many Americans have done this year, (the president) & I are quarantining at home after testing positive for COVID-19.

"We are feeling good & I have postponed all upcoming engagements. Please be sure you are staying safe & we will all get through this together."

Before testing positive for COVID-19, Mr Trump had said he and his wife were self-isolating after Hope Hicks, one of his top aides, had contracted the virus.

Ms Hicks, who serves as a counsellor to the president, is the closest aide to Mr Trump to test positive for coronavirus so far.

She had travelled with the president several times over the last week, including on presidential helicopter Marine One, and on Air Force One to Tuesday night's first presidential debate.

US Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Mr Trump's daughter Ivanka and his son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner have all tested negative for the virus since the president's diagnosis.

Mr Trump's positive test come as the virus continues to spread at an alarming rate in the US, even as the president has tried to downplay the threat of the disease.

More than 200,000 people have died in the US after contracting COVID-19 and more than seven million people in the country have been infected with the disease.

But Mr Trump has continued to hold campaign rallies which have drawn thousands of supporters during the pandemic.

His diagnosis now throws into question the nature of the rest of the campaign, including the remaining two presidential debates.

The next debate is scheduled for 15 October in Miami.

Two days before testing positive, during the first debate, Mr Trump belittled his Democratic challenger Joe Biden for frequently wearing masks and not having campaign rallies that matched his own in size.

The president continued to shake hands with visitors despite public health officials warning against it and also initially resisted being tested.

Mr Trump also refused to wear a mask in public under almost all circumstances.

Covid: What is the risk to Donald Trump's health? - BBC News

Donald Trump has clear risk factors - including his age, weight and being male - that all raise the chances of a severe coronavirus infection.

He is 74 and has a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 30, which is the clinical definition of obesity.

So now he has tested positive for the virus, what does it mean?

As this point, Mr Trump does not seem to have symptoms.

But age is a clear and strong link to developing a severe infection, leading to hospital treatment and in some cases death.

"But most people who get an infection also get better," Dr Bharat Pankhania, from the University of Exeter medical school told the BBC.

An early analysis of more than 100 studies, taking in data from around the world, showed the risk for children and young adults was tiny.

However, at age 75 it is estimated that one-in-25 people who catch coronavirus die. This rises to one-in-seven people aged over 85 and one-in-four over the age of 90.

A similar pattern has been seen by the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

It says eight-out-of-10 Covid deaths in the country have been in the over-65s. And people in Mr Trump's age group are five times more likely to need hospital care and 90 times more likely to die than somebody in their 20s.

It is not clear if the reason is something fundamental about being older, such as the immune system becoming less efficient with time, or if our age is just shorthand for being in generally worse health.

"Age is also tied to heart disease, lung disease, type 2 diabetes, so it's hard to disentangle whether it is their age or comorbidities (other health problems)," Prof Ravindra Gupta, from the University of Cambridge, said.

Obesity has also been linked to more severe disease.

A review of the evidence by Public Health England concluded excess weight increased the chances of needing intensive care treatment and the possibility of death.

Fat in the body can influence the white blood cells of the immune system to increase levels of inflammation in the body. Excessive inflammation is why the infection can become deadly.

But again, obesity is linked to a host of underlying health problems including type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

In the first wave of the pandemic there were more men than women needing hospital treatment with 60% of Covid-19 deaths occurring in men in the UK.

"There are immune differences between men and women," said Prof Ravindra Gupta, which might explain the difference.

But again, men tend to be in worse health to begin with.

Prof Pankhania added: "We do know that being male and older may lead to more severe illness, but that doesn't translate into every older man getting severe illness."

So what does this mean for Mr Trump?

The problem is that it is dangerous to speculate about how the virus will affect any individual person.

Everything you have read is the big picture - a pattern seen across the whole population - it is not a way of saying this is what will happen to the US president.

The health of any two 74-year-olds can be wildly different and other medical conditions massively alter how big a threat this virus poses.

We do not yet know if Donald Trump has even developed symptoms.

"Just because he has risk factors does not mean he is going to have symptoms, severe disease or succumb to the illness," says Dr Nathalie McDermott, from Kings College London.

She added: "He's also the president of the United States, so he has the best healthcare in the world should he become unwell."
