ISIS gunmen storm Kabul University in Afghanistan, killing at least 19 and wounding more than 20

  • Three ISIS gunmen were involved in the assault, all of whom were killed by police
  • Students and lecturers were seen fleeing the scene as hand grenades exploded
  • Afghan special forces surrounded the campus, helping students to safety

Three ISIS gunmen today stormed Kabul University as it hosted a book fair attended by the Iranian ambassador, sparking an hours-long gun battle which left at least 19 people dead and 22 wounded.

The attackers were killed by Afghan security forces in the ensuing gun battle, according to the Interior Ministry's spokesman Tariq Arian. Most of the casualties were students.

As the attack unfolded, students and teachers were seen fleeing the university campus while hand grenades exploded and automatic rifle fire could be heard.

Scores of Afghan special forces surrounded the campus, shepherding teachers and students to safety.

ISIS today claimed responsibility for the deadly attack.

Five hours into the fighting today, sporadic grenade explosions and automatic weapons fire still echoed down the empty streets surrounding the university’s fenced compound. Afghan troops stood guard.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but the Taliban issued a statement denying they took part in the assault. It comes as the insurgents continue peace talks with representatives of Kabul's Washington-backed government, with the aim to help the US finally withdraw from Afghanistan.

Ahmad Samim, a university student, told journalists he saw militants armed with pistols and Kalashnikov assault rifles firing at the school, the country’s oldest with some 17,000 students.

He said the attack happened at the university’s eastern side where its law and journalism faculty teach.

Sami Mahdi, a lecturer at Kabul University said in a tweet: 'I am devastated. I am destroyed. Visited Ali Abad Hospital. Some of our best students are gone forever. Some others including one of our professors are in critical condition. Such beautiful souls. We have always failed to protect our best ones.'

He added: 'I remember everyone's face and have fond memories of them. Nothing could be worse than seeing their faces in blood.'

Shabnam Salehi, another lecturer at the university, condemned the attacks.

She tweeted: 'Terrorists, with extreme brutality, killed and injured dozens of my students at Kabul University. They had ambitions and hope for the future.

'It is how terrorists are the base of our chronic disaster in Afghanistan. A crime against humanity!'

Afghan media reported that a book exhibition was being held at the university and attended by a number of dignitaries at the time of the shooting. None of the dignitaries were reported hurt.

While Afghan officials declined to discuss the bookfair, Iran’s semiofficial ISNA news agency reported Sunday that Iranian Ambassador Bahador Aminian and cultural attaché Mojtaba Noroozi were to inaugurate the fair, which was hosting some 40 Iranian publishers.

Iranian state television reported the attack occurred, but did not offer information on its officials.

Iranian diplomats have been targeted previously in Afghanistan, incidents that dangerously escalated tensions between the two countries.

In 1998, Iran held the Taliban responsible for the deaths of nine Iranian diplomats working in its consulate in northern Afghanistan, and sent reinforcements to the Iran-Afghan border.

It was the second attack on an educational institution in Kabul in as many weeks. With no claim of responsibility for Monday’s attack, suspicion immediately fell on the Islamic State group.

Last month, the Islamic State group sent a suicide bomber into a tutoring center in the capital’s mostly Shiite neighborhood of Dasht-e-Barchi that killed at least 24 students and wounded more than 100 others.

The IS affiliate has declared war on Afghanistan’s minority Shiite Muslims and staged dozens of attacks since emerging in the region in 2014. A horrific attack earlier this year on a Kabul maternity hospital — also in the Dasht-e-Barchi neighborhood — was blamed on the Islamic State group. In that attack, militants killed 25 people, many of them newborn babies and mothers.

Schools have also been targeted in past attacks. Last year, a bomb outside of the Kabul University’s gates killed eight people. In 2016, gunmen attacked the American University in Kabul, killing 13.

US election map: Current rankings presidential election - who is leading right now? - Daily Express

is hoping to win a second term as President for the Republicans in the this week. But according to the latest polls, his Democrat rival Joe Biden is currently leading and is on course to be America’s next President. Express.co.uk has gathered exclusive data on what the bookmakers think will happen when America heads to the polls on November 3.

According to the latest FiveThirtyEight poll on November 2, Joe Biden is “clearly favoured” to win the next US election.

Mr Biden is currently forecast to win 53.4 percent of the popular vote, while Mr Trump is forecast to win 45.4 percent.

With 270 electoral college votes needed to win the election, as of November 2, FiveThirtyEight polls show Mr Biden is forecast to win 350 electoral college votes, while Mr Trump is predicted to win 188 electoral college votes.

Bookmakers Betfair has launched a swing-o-meter tool for the US election, and currently it predicts Mr Biden as the favourite with odds of 65 percent.

READ MORE: Can Donald Trump beat Joe Biden?

“The Democrats were the narrow favourites in early October, but as early voting figures have been released, Trump’s odds have steadily improved.

“While early voting figures give Biden a lead, the expected Trump vote on the day is expected to be very strong, and experts say Biden’s lead isn’t enough to hang on here.

“Current odds have Trump as an 8/11 (57 percent) chance to win here, in a state he simply cannot afford to lose.”

Both candidates will be keen to scoop votes in other contested states such as Nevada, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

Mr Hughes said: “Another state Trump has been targeting in recent weeks is Nevada. The Silver State has swung blue in the last three elections, but with the pandemic forcing the state’s primary income driver, the gaming industry, to close down, Trump has leveraged his re-opening plan to appeal to voters there, with a view within his camp that the state is up for grabs, and the odds have moved to reflect this.

“The Democrats were as short as 1/5 (84 percent) to win this state in July, but heavy campaigning from Trump saw his odds improve markedly, and last week he was as short as 9/4 (30 percent) to flip this steady blue state.

“However, the odds have changed once again in recent days, and Trump’s odds currently stand at 4/1 (20 percent), with it looking less and less likely that these six EC votes will come his way.

“North Carolina is also being closely contested on the east coast, and is another state Trump simply has to win if he wants to maintain control of the White House, and there is potentially some good news for him here.

“Having flip-flopped with the Democrats all summer, with both parties being the favourite at various times to win the state, Biden’s odds improved sharply in early October to 4/5 (55 percent), in what was a hammer blow to Trump.

“However, in the last 48 hours, Trump’s odds have improved to 21/20 (48 percent), and this crucial swing-state is now a coin flip according to Betfair Exchange punters.

“Perhaps the most important state of all is Pennsylvania- Trump has to win this blue-collar state to win the election, and while Biden can just about absorb a loss here, it is the knock-on effect of the likely votes in neighbouring Michigan and Wisconsin that could harm the current election favourite, with the three states often mirroring each other.

“Biden has been the strong favourite here for most of the year, and although his 4/9 (69 percent) odds from July have gotten slightly worse, his odds have improved from last week, where he was 4/7 (63 percent) and is now 1/2 (65 percent).

“Trump will need a miracle of sorts to turn things around, with the hope that Biden’s promise to move away from fossil fuels will harm his vote in the Oil State, which heavily depends on the industry for employment.”

Overall Betfair are currently predicting Joe Biden will win the election for the Democrats this year.

Mr Hughes concluded: “Based on current Betfair Exchange state betting odds, the prediction is that Biden will cruise to victory, in a relatively comfortable manner.

“Betfair Exchange odds project 305 Electoral College Votes, to Trump’s 233, which would see Joseph Robinette Biden confirmed as the 46th President of the United States of America.

“Trump could find claim victories on the east coast, in North Carolina and Florida, but it still wouldn’t be enough- Biden has a stranglehold on too many crucial swing states to be toppled unless there is a drastic change between now and tomorrow.”

The latest Betfair odds on key swing states:

  • Arizona- GOP 5/4, Dems 4/5
  • Florida- GOP 8/11, Dems 11/8
  • Georgia- GOP 8/11, Dems 11/8.
  • Iowa- GOP 2/5, Dems 5/2.
  • Michigan- GOP 7/2, Dems 2/7
  • Minnesota- GOP 7/2, Dems 2/7
  • Nevada- GOP 4/1, Dems 1/4.
  • North Carolina- GOP 21/20, 20/21
  • Ohio- GOP 1/2, Dems 2/1.
  • Pennsylvania- GOP 7/4, Dems 4/7.
  • Texas- GOP 2/5, Dems 5/2.
  • Wisconsin- GOP 7/2, Dems 2/7

1. Donald Trump swept through five states on Sunday - they were either swing states or states he won last time but where polls are now showing a very close race.

2. "Fire Fauci" was the latest chant to be heard at a Trump rally - and the president hinted to a crowd in Florida he might like to do just that after the country's top infectious diseases expert criticised the White House's virus strategy.

3. Joe Biden focused on Pennsylvania, an important state in his path to the White House, but one which will only start counting postal votes on election day - something Mr Trump has said he could challenge in court.

4. Groups of Trump supporters in trucks were out on the streets and some of them have been accused of intimidation - the FBI is already investigating Trump supporters ramming a Biden campaign bus in Texas on Saturday.

'Anti-fracking activist' Lady Gaga and the Pennsylvania vote

Lady Gaga, that well-known "anti-fracking activist", has made her way into Donald Trump's mentions.

The 34-year-old, who is also known for being a pop superstar with several Grammy awards and one Oscar, is set to join Joe Biden and Kamala Harris at a rally in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Monday.

For the record, she is not famous for being an anti-fracking activist but that is how she was described in a tweet by Donald Trump's communications director Tim Murtaugh.

"Nothing exposes Biden's disdain for the forgotten working men & women of PA like campaigning with anti-fracking activist Lady Gaga," he wrote.

The Trump campaign statement on Lady Gaga's forthcoming appearance with Joe Biden links to an October 2012 post on Lady Gaga's official Facebook page, which posts without comment a link to the website Artists Against Fracking. Mr Trump also tweeted his outrage.

Lady Gaga responded, glad "to be living rent free" in their heads and asked "also, what is fracking?"

Fracking is the process of drilling into the earth to release natural gas and oil. The Trump campaign has identified it as a critical election issue in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, which has a booming natural gas industry.

The Biden campaign says it does not have a policy to ban fracking but it would seek to end fracking leases on federal land. The Democrat has been under particular pressure on the issue since speaking about a "transition" away from oil in the final TV debate., which his team later said he didn't really mean.

Lady Gaga did also include in her post: "Keep your jobs PA!"

Mr Trump's final rally of Sunday was in Miami - and the Spanish-speaking Colombian vallenato band he brought in to warm up the crowd was a clue as to one important intended audience.

Meanwhile Democrat politician Julian Castro campaigned for Joe Biden in Arizona, where he visited a Day of the Dead altar upon which a picture of his late step-mother who recently died of Covid-19 was placed. Democrats are hoping that the state's growing Latino population could change a Republican landscape.

Kabul attack: Gunmen storm university in Afghanistan, killing at least 19 - Sky News

Gunmen stormed a university campus book fair, shooting dead at least 19 and wounding more than 20 more.

The hours-long siege at Kabul University came as the Iranian ambassador to Afghanistan was attending the event.

Security forces eventually shot dead all three gunmen.

Throughout the stand-off, grenades and automatic weapons could be heard across the city and witnesses claimed the attackers were deliberately targeting students.

One of the students, Fathullah Moradi, who escaped through the university's gates with a group of friends, said: "They were shooting at every student they saw."

Another, Ahmad Samim, said he saw militants armed with pistols and Kalashnikov assault rifles firing at the law and journalism wing of the school, which is the country's oldest and has around 17,000 students.

The Taliban said their fighters were not involved in the assault and no other group immediately claimed involvement.

More from Afghanistan

The attack came as insurgents continued peace talks with the US-backed government.

The negotiations, taking place in the Gulf Arab state of Qatar, aim to help the US finally withdraw from America's longest war, though daily bloodshed continues.

At least 24 people including teenage students were killed in a suicide bombing at an education centre in a heavily Shia neighbourhood of western Kabul on 25 October.

Iranian diplomats have been targeted previously by attacks in the country.

In 1998, Iran held the Taliban responsible for the deaths of nine of its diplomats who were working in its consulate in northern Afghanistan.

Election 2020: Joe Biden has MORE senior moments at Michigan rally - Daily Mail

The man who could be America’s next president in three days: Barack Obama had to call Joe Biden three times before he finally emerged at Michigan rally, then had to remind him to put his mask back on and help guide him off the stage

  • Joe Biden held a rally in swing state of Michigan on Saturday alongside Obama
  • Former president warmed up for his old friend, before calling him up to the stage
  • Biden missed his cue, and Obama had to call twice more before he emerged
  • Biden then forgot mask coming off stage, with Obama appearing to remind him

'Sleepy' Joe Biden was caught napping twice during a rally in Michigan on Saturday, missing his cue to appear on stage and then forgetting his mask as he walked off it.

The 77-year-old was speaking at a rally in Flint alongside Barack Obama when he suffered the 'senior moments', just the latest in a series of gaffes that have dogged his presidential run and raised questions over his mental capacity.

The first came as Obama had just finished warming up for his old Vice President, and tried to welcome him to the stage by shouting: 'My friend, the next President of the United State of America, Joe Biden!'

But Biden was nowhere to be seen, prompting Obama to shout for him again.

Several more awkward seconds passed, as Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder - who performed at a different Biden rally that day - began playing over the loudspeakers.

Eventually Biden emerged, jogging over to the stage from a nearby school building as Obama tried to get the crowd - who were confined to their cars as a Covid precaution - fired up, shouting: 'Honk if you're ready!'

During the rally itself, Biden also appeared to stumble over the word 'healthcare' while lining up a shot at the newest member of the Supreme Court - a Trump nominee - Amy Coney Barrett.

'Donald Trump thinks health care is a privilege, Barack and I think it's a right to have badakathcare,' he said.

He fumbled again at the end of the rally, as Obama returned to the stage wearing a facemask and the two waved to the crowd before going off together.

Biden - who was wearing a mask as he emerged before removing to speak - appeared to forget he hadn't put it back on as he departed.

Obama stopped him at the top of the stage steps and said a few words to him, after which he jogged back to the podium in search of the face covering.

After about 20 second of fumbling, Biden eventually found the face covering - which was in his pocket, not on the podium - and put it back in place.

In a bizarre moment, Biden then picked up the microphone again as if he were about to speak, before putting it down without saying anything and walking off stage

There was then further confusion as he picked his microphone back up from the podium where he had left it, and seemed to try and talk into it.

It appeared the microphone had been disconnected, because Biden quickly placed it back down without saying anything and followed Obama off stage.

The frequent slip-ups, which began during the presidential primaries and have continued throughout Biden's main run, have raised doubts about his fitness for office, and Republicans have hammered him over it.

On Sunday, Biden slipped up at a rally in Philadelphia - touting his links to the state by boasting 'I married a Philly girl' before pointing to his jacket.

'By the way, I've got my Eagles jacket on,' he said, pointing to the logo on his windbreaker.

In fact, the symbol was not the Philadelphia Eagles' logo but that of his alma mater, the Delaware Blue Hens.

Among those highlighting the mix-up was Zach Parkinson, the deputy director of communications for President Donald Trump's campaign.

He wrote on Twitter: 'This 'Eagles' jacket Biden claims he's wearing to try and show how much he's in touch with Pennsylvania? It's a Delaware Blue Hens jacket.'

During his speech Biden pleaded with voters to turn out at the polls on Tuesday as he aims to shore up support in Pennsylvania, which has emerged as one of the most hotly-contested battleground states in the final days before the election.

'We're at an inflection point. So we have to vote like we never did before. There's too much on the line to sit it out,' he said.

'We only have two more days. Two more days we can put an end to this presidency that as has from the very beginning sought to divide us, to tear us apart.'

Eagle-eyed Twitter users were quick to notice that Biden had mixed up his birds, as his jacket actually showed a Blue Hen from University of Delaware

Last week, Biden was addressing a virtual concert when he appeared to forget who he was running against, telling viewers 'we need to stop four more years of George.'

Wife Jill, who was sitting next to her husband, appeared to mutter Trump under her breath in an attempt to correct him.

Hours later President Trump tweeted: 'Joe Biden called me George yesterday. Couldn't remember my name.

'Got some help from the anchor to get him through the interview. The Fake News Cartel is working overtime to cover it up!'

But Democrats insisted that he was actually saying the name of George Lopez, host of the rally whose questions he was answering.

On social media, people were dismayed.

'Watch his wife saying Trump under her breath 3 times,' said one.

Another remarked: 'The look on Jill's face was like 'come on Joe, get the train back on the tracks...''

Biden and Jill appeared during the star-studded 'I Will Vote Concert' which was headlined by A$AP Ferg, Sara Bareilles, Aloe Blacc, the Black Eyed Peas, Jon Bon Jovi and Cher.

It garnered around 12,000 views and was live-streamed on YouTube.

It comes just two days after the former Vice President said during a campaign video: 'We have put together, I think, the most extensive and inclusive voter fraud organization in the history of American politics.'

This too was seized upon by the Trump campaign, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany who tweeted: 'BIDEN ADMITS TO VOTER FRAUD!'

Biden has also attempted to laugh off Trump's attacks on his mental agility, telling 60 Minutes: 'The same guy who thought that the 911 attack was a 7-Eleven attack?

'He's talking about dementia?

'All I can say to the American people is watch me, is see what I've done, is see what I'm going to do. Look at me. Compare our physical and mental acuity.

Donald Trump is banking on a late surge in key swing states to tip the election in his favor, the same path to victory that he took in 2016

Donald Trump is banking on a late surge in key swing states to tip the election in his favor, the same path to victory that he took in 2016

'I'm happy to have that comparison.'

Monday marks the final full day of campaigning for Trump and Biden, with each hoping to tip the race in their favor in the closing stages.

More than 93 million people have already voted - two third of the 2016 total - and each campaign insists it has a pathway to victory.

Mr Trump is banking on a surge of enthusiasm from his most loyal supporters in the swing states, allowing him to eke out an electoral college win without winning the popular vote.

Heading into the closing 24 hours, Mr Trump and Mr Biden each painted the other as unfit for office and described the next four years in near apocalyptic terms if the other were to win.

The incumbent president told a rally in Iowa: 'The Biden plan will turn America into a prison state locking you down while letting the far-left rioters roam free to loot and burn.'

Mr Biden said America was on the verge of putting 'an end to a presidency that's fanned the flames of hate'.

Speaking in Philadelphia, the biggest city in a state that could decide the presidency, he said: 'When America is heard, I believe the message is going to be clear: It's time for Donald Trump to pack his bags and go home.

'We're done with the chaos, the tweets, the anger, the hate.'

Biden's blunders: From claiming 200 million Americans have been wiped out by Covid to forgetting the Declaration of Independence

August 8, 2019: He tells the Asian & Latino Coalition in Des Moines, Iowa, that 'poor kids are just as bright and just as talented as white kids.'

He attempted to clear up his statement, adding: 'Wealthy kids, black kids, Asian kids — no, I really mean it. But think how we think about it ... mWe think how we're going to dumb it down. They can do anything anybody else can do given a shot.'

Later that day he tells a crowd: 'We choose unity over division. We choose science over fiction. We choose truth over facts.'

August 9: Biden was accosted by a right-wing Turning Point USA staffer at a rally in Iowa. 'How many genders are there?' He asked.

Biden replied: 'There are at least three.'

The reporter said, 'What are they?'

And Biden responded: 'Don't play games with me, kid.' Biden then shook someone in the crowd's hand before turning back and saying, 'By the way, the first one to come out for marriage was me.'

August 10: Biden says he was VP when the Parkland school shooting took place, even though it occurred in 2018.

'Those kids in Parkland came up to see me when I was vice president,' he told a reporter.

A campaign official clarified that Biden meant the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, in December 2012.

August 24: Biden mistakes New Hampshire for Vermont.

Speaking in Keene, NH, he said: 'I love this place. Look, what's not to like about Vermont in terms of the beauty of it?'

September 2: Biden appears confused about the definition of a magazine for a rifle, telling supporters in Iowa: 'The idea that we don't have elimination of assault type weapons, magazines that can hold multiple bullets in them, it's absolutely mindless.'

By definition a magazine holds multiple rounds.

September 25: Biden forgot the name of the last Supreme Court nominee under President Barack Obama on Jimmy Kimmel's show.

'Back when, when they were holding up before Trump got elected, they were holding up, uh, um, the nomination of the president put forward for the Supreme Court,' Biden rambled.

'Merrick Garland,' Kimmel said.

'Merrick Garland, a really fine man,' Biden added.

November 2: Says he's in Ohio when he's in Iowa.

November 20: Biden claimed that he had the backing of the Senate's only black female Senator during a Democratic debate.

'I have more people supporting me in the black community that have vouched for me because they know who I am… The only African-American woman who's ever been elected to the United States Senate.'

Senator Kamala Harris corrected him, saying: 'That's not true. The other one is here!'

December 5: He called a voter a 'damn liar' and 'fat' after he asked if his son Hunter earned a job on the board of a Ukrainian gas company as a result of his father's high office.

'You're a damn liar, and that's not true,' Biden snapped at him. 'I'm not sedentary. You want to check my shape, let's do push ups together, let's run, let's do whatever you want to do, let's take an IQ test.'

He continued, 'But look, fat, here's the deal.'

February 9, 2020: Biden called a 21-year-old woman a 'lying, dog-faced pony soldier' during a Q&A in New Hampshire.

Asked by the economics student Madison Moore about his poor performances in the Iowa caucuses, he asked if she'd ever attended a caucus. Moore said she had and Biden hit back: 'No you haven’t! You’re a lying, dog-faced pony soldier.'

February 24: In South Carolina he said: 'My name's Joe Biden. I'm a Democratic candidate for the United States Senate.'

During the same speech he claimed to to have worked with Chinese leader 'Deng Xiaoping' on the Paris Climate Accord - Deng died in 1997.

February 25: During the final Democratic debate he claimed that '150 million people have been killed since 2007' by guns. If that were the case, half the American population would be dead.

March 1: He calls Fox News host Chris Wallace 'Chuck,' and then claims it was because he'd had a recent interview with NBC's Chuck Todd.

March 3: He confused Super Tuesday with 'Super Thursday.'

And during the same speech he botched the Declaration of Independence, saying: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident. All men and women are created, by the, you know, you know the thing.'

March 4: He confused his wife with his sister on stage at a rally in California.

'By the way, this is my little sister Valerie!' Biden said while grabbing his wife's right hand. 'And I'm Jill's husband,' he went on while reaching for his sister's.

March 9: 'Together, I think we can win back the House,' Biden said before correcting himself. 'We're gonna keep the House, increase it and flip the Senate.'

March 10: Biden pledged to ban the 'AR-14,' (instead of AR-15) when challenged by a worker who accused him of 'trying to diminish our second amendment right and take away our guns.'

April: He appeared to forget Barack Obama's name while discussing Russia's annexation of Crimea.

'Because they invaded another country and annexed a significant portion of it called Crimea. He's saying that it was president - my boss - it was his fault.'

May 22: Biden tells radio host Charlmagne the God that 'if you have a problem figuring out whether you're for me or Trump, then you ain't black.'

August 31: Speaking at a steel factory in Pittsburgh, he stumbled badly over his words, saying: 'COVID has taken this year, just since the outbreak, has taken more than 100 years. Look, here's, the lives, it's just, it's uh, I mean think about it. More lives this year than any other year for the past 100 years.'

September 15: Biden says that wealthy people were able to stay home during lockdown because 'some black woman was able to stack the grocery shelf.'

Speaking to a group of veterans in Tampa, Florida, he said: 'The American public, the blinders have been taken off. They've all of a sudden seen a hell of a lot clearer.

'They're saying: "Jeez, the reason I was able to stay sequestered in my home is because some black woman was able to stack the grocery shelf."'

September 20: Biden said that 200 million had died of coronavirus, confusing a million for a thousand.

'It's estimated that 200 million people have died probably by the time I finish this talk,' he said.

September 21: He botches the pledge of allegiance, saying: 'I pledge allegiance to the United States of America, one nation, indivisible, under God, for real.'

The correct text is: 'I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.'

October 12: He appeared to forget that he ran against Mitt Romney in 2012.

'You may remember,' Biden said when telling reporters he was opposed to Democrats criticizing Amy Coney Barrett's faith, 'I got in trouble when we were running against that senator who was a Mormon, the governor.'

October 24: He tells a virtual meeting: 'We have put together, I think, the most extensive and inclusive voter fraud organization in the history of American politics.'

October 25: He got confused about who is president, calling him, 'George.'

Speaking at the 'I Will Vote Concert' Biden said: 'Four more years of George, er, George, er, he - we're going to find ourselves in a position where, if Trump gets elected, we're going to be in a different world.'

He was aided by his wife Jill who appeared to mutter 'Trump,' under her breath while Biden struggled for the words.

Donald Trump has surged ahead in the key swing state of Iowa, according to a poll that suggests he has a slim chance of pulling off another huge upset.

The survey for the Des Moines Register showed the President was seven points ahead of Joe Biden with a day until the election.

The same late poll in 2016 was one of the few showing that Mr Trump could win the White House. It gave him a seven-point Iowa lead over Hillary Clinton which became a win by 9.6 percentage points.

The survey will worry Democrats who fear Mr Biden faces the same fate as Mrs Clinton, also the strong favourite.

He is ahead by around seven points overall in the polls, and there is little doubt that – like her four years ago – he will win considerably more votes than Mr Trump. However, the outcome of the election will be decided not nationally, but by a handful of battleground states.

In the final weekend of campaigning the two candidates stormed through the swing states with a particular focus on Pennsylvania. It is one of ten won last time by Mr Trump and he needs to hold on to most of them if he is to remain in the White House.

Mr Biden leads in nearly all of these states, but his advantage is slim and falling.

Together they account for 179 Electoral College votes and Mr Biden needs to grab 38 on top of the 2016 Clinton haul.

If Mr Trump can hold on to enough large states – such as Texas with 38 votes, Florida with 29, Pennsylvania with 20 and Ohio with 18 – then Mr Biden may struggle to make up the numbers elsewhere.

Iowa is one of the few swing states where Mr Trump has moved ahead, and the Register poll shows it is becoming a sizeable one. He has 48 per cent compared with Mr Biden’s 41 per cent – the same poll in September showed them tied on 47.

A RealClearPolitics (RCP) average of polls gives Mr Trump a lead of 0.7 per cent in Iowa.

He has yet to pull off the same feat in enough of the other swing states and is still trailing by four points in Pennsylvania. Yesterday he tweeted: ‘Our numbers are looking VERY good all over. Sleepy Joe is already beginning to pull out of certain states. The Radical Left is going down!’

The President’s path to victory involves retaining and building on his voting base from 2016, but polls show he is haemorrhaging support among women and pensioners. As a result he is relentlessly focusing his efforts on very targeted states so he can scrape the 270 Electoral College votes needed for victory.

Mr Trump must retain all the southern states he won in 2016 including Arizona, Florida and Georgia, where he is behind by 1 per cent, 0.7 per cent and 0.8 per cent respectively.

If the President also holds on to two or three of five ‘Rust Belt’ states in the Mid West that he won from the Democrats in 2016, then he has a path back to the White House. He is behind in three, including Michigan, which he won last time by seven points.

Political strategist Mike Madrid, one of the founders of The Lincoln Project, a Republican group opposing Mr Trump, said: ‘If he does have a dramatic overperformance... I could easily see them winning North Carolina and Florida’.

Earthquake in Turkey and Greece: Children, 3 and 14, pulled from rubble three days after tremor - Sky News

Two children, aged three and 14, have been pulled from rubble three days after a strong earthquake hit Turkey and Greece, killing at least 81 people and injuring more than a thousand.

Rescuers in the Turkish city of Izmir clapped as the young teenager, Idil Sirin, was saved from under a toppled building she had been trapped beneath for about 58 hours.

Shortly afterwards, three-year-old Elif Perincek was rescued some 65 hours after her apartment building also crumbled - reportedly becoming the 106th person to be saved.

A 14-year-old girl was also pulled from under a collapsed building

Health minister Fahrettin Koca said Elif "strengthened our hope" as she "said hello to life again", in a tweet with a video of the girl being stretchered into an ambulance as onlookers gathered.

"We are grateful for our teams," he added.

Elif's mother and two sisters were rescued two days before she was, according to local media, while Idil's eight-year-old sister died.

The girls' survival stories followed similar news on Sunday of 70-year-old man, Ahmet Citim, who was rescued from a collapsed building in Izmir 34 hours after the quake hit. Citim said he "never lost hope" as he lay trapped.

More from Earthquakes

Inci Okan, 16, was stuck under the same eight-storey building before being rescued 17 hours after the quake.

While Rescue teams found more survivors overnight in Turkey's third largest city, they also found many more bodies.

The tremor hit the Aegean Sea on Friday, northeast of the Greek island of Samos. It killed two teenagers found near a collapsed wall and injured at least 19 others on the island.

Its magnitude has been debated, with the US Geological Survey putting it at 7, while the Istanbul's Kandilli Institute said it was 6.9 and Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) measuring it at 6.6.

The quake triggered heavy surges of water in many low-lying coastal areas, with Izmir and the Greek island of Samos the worst hit. Hundreds of aftershocks were felt.

Turkey has a mix of older buildings and cheap or illegal construction, which can lead to serious damage and deaths from earthquakes.

Adding to its earthquake risk is its position on top of fault lines. In 1999, two powerful quakes killed some 18,000 people in the country's northwest. This latest disaster has further hurt a nation severely struggling with the pandemic.

Greece is also prone to tremors.
