Trier: Two killed by car in pedestrian zone in Germany - BBC News

At least two people have been killed and several others injured after a car ploughed through a pedestrian area of the western German city of Trier, officials say.

The driver, a 51-year-old local man, has been arrested, police say.

The city's mayor described the scene as "horrible" and said the victims included a girl.

The circumstances of the incident are still not clear. Police have told people to avoid the area.

Witnesses said people screamed in panic and some were thrown into the air as an SUV at high speed drove through the Fleischstrasse pedestrianised street, near the city's famous Roman gate, the Porta Nigra.

A Christmas market that is usually held in the area was cancelled this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but shops were open. The streets have been cordoned off.

The incident happened at around 13:45 local time (12:45 GMT), and the suspect drove for 1km (0.62 miles) before being stopped by a police car, Trier police spokesman Karl-Peter Jochem said.

Footage posted on social media appeared to show the presumed driver being held by several officers next to the damaged car.

Police were questioning the suspect, who was alone, and the danger "was over", Mr Jochem said. "As to the man's motive, we can't say anything yet," he added.

Speaking at a news conference, Mayor Wolfram Leibe said: "We [had] a driver who ran amok in the city... I just walked through the city centre and it was just horrible. There is a trainer lying on the ground, and the girl it belongs to is dead."

Up to 15 people had been injured, some of them seriously, he told public broadcaster SWR.

Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman Steffen Seibert called the incident "shocking". "[Our] thoughts are with the relatives of the victims, the many injured and all those who are helping to care for those affected," he said on Twitter.

Trier, a city of around 110,000 people, is 720km west of Berlin, near the border with Luxembourg. Police have also told people not to share pictures and footage of the incident on social media.

Security in pedestrian zones across Germany was tightened after an Islamist militant drove a hijacked truck into a Christmas market in Berlin in 2016, killing 12 people and injuring dozens of others. He was shot dead by Italian police four days later.

Trump has raised $170 million since Election Day with appeal for his 'defense fund' - Daily Mail

Donald Trump has raised $170 million since Election Day by targeting supporters with appeal for his 'defense fund' - which can actually be used to pay his personal expenses when he leaves White House

  • Three-quarters of every contribution goes to his new 'Save America' fund
  • Also used to retire campaign debt
  • Funds can be used for future election run or to help other candidates
  • Few spending limitations on such leadership PACs
  • Trump's legal team has racked up a series of defeats in court
  • Lawyer Rudy Giuliani held another hearing-style event Monday claiming fraud

President Donald Trump's constant appeals for funds to help his 'defense fund' amid his own charges of fraud have raked in millions that can be used to fund future political activities or boost political candidates he favors.

In fact, according to the fine print in the drumbeat of solicitations, three quarters of every contribution goes to Trump's new PAC, the 'Save America' fund.

Requests to supporters, many of whom already funded Trump's unsuccessful campaign, have frequently stressed 'MASSIVE' voting problems, claiming the campaign was 'robbed' and seeking contributions of as little as $10.

It offers 'matching' awards of up to 1,000 percent, with no verification or disclosure of who might be making it.

A quarter of the take goes to the Republican National Committee, and there is no guarantee it goes to Trump's continued efforts to overturn the election results.

The total raised since Election Day has reached about $170 million, the New York Times reports.

Most of the money came in during the initial week after Election Day. But the appeals have persisted – a sign that the president's bid to contest the results continues to be a cash cow.

There were at least four text solicitations Monday alone – one from Donald Trump Jr. asking to 'CRUSH' the end of the month goal. 'I spoke with my father and he's REACTIVATED your 1000% offer for 1 more HOUR!' he writes.

A text said to be from 'Pres Trump' tells supporters 'We're $53k SHORT of our Deadline Goal.'

'We're in the final stretch & we need YOU to DEFEND THE Election,' said another.'

Only after donors kick in $5,000 to the pack do funds go to the recount effort – which suffered more defeats Monday when Wisconsin and Arizona certified results for President-elect Joe Biden.

Trump's leadership pac can make contributions totaling $5,000 to other campaign committees, providing a valuable influence tool after he leaves office.

It has far less stringent rules that those that accompany a candidate's campaign.

“With a candidate committee, there is a personal-use prohibition,” Larry Noble of the Campaign Legal Center told the Washington Post. “So they cannot use money in a candidate committee for anyone’s personal use: They can’t pay exorbitant salaries, they can’t give gifts to people. If you’re talking about a leadership PAC or an independent expenditure PAC, there’s no prohibition on how they use the money.”

That means the funds can go for travel, rallies, salaries or even memberships.

Car hits pedestrians in German city of Trier - Daily Mail

At least two killed and several injured as car ploughs through pedestrian zone in German city

At least two people have been killed and 15 injured after a car drove into pedestrians in the German city of Trier.

Police rushed to the city centre on Tuesday afternoon after a car drove into a pedestrian area near the city's main market.

A witness told local paper Trierische Volksfreund that a dark gray Range Rover had driven at high speed into crowds, with people 'flying into the air'.

The car was stopped and the driver arrested, police said, before urging people to avoid the area.

Officers warned people to avoid the scene, and said they are on the scene alongside ambulance crews, while helicopters were also hovering over the city.

While Trier is usually home to one of Germany's most popular Christmas markets, the event was cancelled this year because of the pandemic.

Man 'held captive in Swedish apartment by his mother' is freed after 28 years - Daily Mail

Man, 41, with no teeth is freed from apartment 'where mother kept him captive for 28 YEARS' in Stockholm

  • Malnourished man, 41, found covered in sores, missing his teeth, and struggling to walk or talk at an apartment in Stockholm
  • His mother, 70, is now suspected of keeping him a virtual prisoner for 28 years
  • She is thought to have taken him out of school aged 12 and kept him in 'filthy' flat
  • Man was found by a suspicious relative last week after she broke in to the home

A mother has been arrested and accused of keeping her son imprisoned for 28 years at her flat in Sweden

Medics were called to the apartment, in Stockholm, on Sunday after a suspicious relative broke in and found the woman's son, now 41, locked inside.

The man was severely malnourished, had sores and open wounds covering his legs, almost no teeth, and was struggling to walk and talk, Swedish media reports.

The man was taken to hospital where he had to undergo surgery, though medics say his wounds are not life-threatening.

Meanwhile the hospital contacted police who opened an investigation, and then placed the mother under arrest.

Officers have since cordoned off the flat, south of Stockholm, and could be seen collecting evidence on Tuesday.

It is thought the mother has kept the son a virtual prisoner in the apartment since pulling him out of school aged just 12, in 1984, Expressen reports.

Sources told newspaper Aftonbladet that the mother was 'very overprotective' of her son due to a 'family incident' that had happened some years before.

A relative discovered the woman's son, now 41, inside the 'filthy' apartment on Sunday after becoming suspicious and breaking in

Neighbours said the mother kept her apartment in a dilapidated state, with an advent candle standing in one window for around 30 years.

But they added that she often stopped to chat with them in public, usually about banal subjects such as the weather.

Whenever she was asked about her son, they said, she would respond that he was 'fine' and change the subject.

One neighbour reported seeing the son while out shopping over the summer, and said he approached and told her: 'I know who you are, you're my neighbour.'

But most claimed never to have seen the man, or to have realised he was living in their apartment building until after officers arrived.

The discovery was made by one of the woman's relatives, who had long held suspicions that she was controlling the boy's life - but was unaware to what extent.

In early November, it is thought the mother went to hospital where she was kept while receiving treatment for an unknown condition.

On Sunday, the relative managed to get into her flat, and discovered the son lying on a blanket on the floor of the kitchen.

The relative described the flat as filthy, saying it had not been cleaned in many years and stank of rotting food and urine.

There was so much rubbish piled up in the hallways that it was difficult to walk through, the person said.

The son was found with sores covering his legs, barely able to speak, and with pus leaking from open wounds.

He was severely malnourished, having been left with a cheese sandwich, a can of mackerel and a bowl of chips to survive on.

An old TV had also been left on in the flat, which was otherwise completely silent.

The relative said she had not seen the man for over 20 year, but he recognised her and kept whispering his name over and over.

'The mother is suspected of illegal deprivation of liberty and causing bodily harm,' Stockholm police spokesman Ola Osterling told AFP.

He said the man had been 'locked up for a very long time' in the apartment in the southern Stockholm suburb of Haninge.

'The man is in hospital. His injuries are not life-threatening,' he added.

The mother has denied the crimes, the Swedish Prosecution Authority said.

Doctors at the hospital had alerted police to the case.

'I'm in shock, brokenhearted, but at the same time relieved. I've been waiting for this day for 20 years because I figured out that she was totally controlling his life, but I never imagined the extent of it,' the relative said.

'I'm just thankful that he got help and is going to survive.'

President Trump ties Joe Biden's hands with new China sanctions - The Times

President Trump is to blacklist two of China’s most influential companies as he looks to box in his successor by escalating his diplomatic and economic offensive against Beijing.

China National Offshore Oil Corporation, the state-owned oil company, and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), the country’s biggest maker of chips for the technology industry, are to be sanctioned over alleged links to the military.

Mr Trump, 74, has vowed that China will “pay a big price” for the coronavirus outbreak as new American cases continue to break records. The president is trying to recast a trading relationship that he has called “the greatest theft in the history of the world”.

The sanctions would bring the number of designated Chinese companies to 35. China National Offshore

China refuses to apologise for fake image of Australia soldier - BBC News

Lijian Zhao
AFP

China has accused Australia of trying to "deflect public attention" from alleged war crimes by Australian solders in Afghanistan.

The comments came a day after Canberra demanded Beijing apologise for tweeting a fake image depicting an Australian soldier murdering an Afghan child.

Beijing also said that Australia was trying to "blame China for the worsening of bilateral ties".

Relations between the two nations have plummeted to a new low in recent days.

The tweet with the fake image was in response to an Australian Defence Force inquiry which said it found "credible information" that 25 Australian soldiers were involved in the murders of 39 Afghan civilians and prisoners between 2009 and 2013.

The findings, now under police investigation, triggered global condemnation.

The doctored image triggered furious reactions in Canberra. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Beijing should be "utterly ashamed" for sharing the "repugnant" image, demanding an apology from China the same day.

On Tuesday the Chinese Embassy in Australia attacked his remarks without offering an apology.

"The accusations made are simply to serve two purposes. One is to deflect public attention from the horrible atrocities by certain Australian soldiers. The other is to blame China for the worsening of bilateral ties. There may be another attempt to stoke domestic nationalism," it said in a statement.

"It's our advice that the Australian side face up to the crimes committed by Australian soldiers in Afghanistan, hold those perpetrators accountable and bring justice to the victims," the statement added.

Bilateral relations between China and Australia have been deeply strained this year after Canberra led calls for a probe into the origins of the Covid-19 pandemic.

  • Australia demands China apology for 'repugnant' post
  • The year when Australia and China hit 'lowest ebb'

A few months ago the last two correspondents working for Australian media in China were evacuated on the advice of diplomats.

More recently two Australian academics were banned from entering China.

There have also been ongoing discussions about Beijing's alleged interference in Australian affairs and economic tensions including trade stoppages and tariffs imposed by China on Canberra, including tariffs of up to 200% on Australian wine.
