US election results: Georgia confirms Joe Biden beat Donald Trump to win state after second recount - Sky News

Georgia has recertified its presidential election results after a second recount - requested by Donald Trump - confirmed Joe Biden won the state.

President-elect Biden took the state by more than 12,000 votes in last month's ballot, becoming the first Democratic presidential nominee to win there in nearly three decades.

Georgia's secretary of state Brad Raffensperger, who, like Mr Trump, is a Republican, said: "We have now counted legally-cast ballots three times, and the results remain unchanged."

Mr Trump has repeatedly claimed, without evidence, that the presidential election was rigged, saying there was widespread voter fraud and that poll watchers were denied access to counts.

"They cheated and they rigged our presidential election but we will still win it," Mr Trump told supporters in the state on Saturday, at his first rally since election day on 3 November.

More from Donald Trump

The crowd replied by chanting "we love you" and "four more years".

Mr Trump continued: "Let them steal Georgia again, you'll never be able to look yourself in the mirror."

But recounts in the state, including a review by hand of around five million ballots, have not found any significant irregularities.

Dozens of the Trump campaign's legal challenges have been rejected by the courts, the latest on Monday when a federal judge in Detroit threw out a bid to decertify Mr Biden's election victory in Michigan.

Georgia will name its electors a week from now, on 14 December, the date set for the Electoral College to formalise the result.

Two run-off elections for the Senate, scheduled for 5 January, will determine which party controls the chamber.

Mr Trump responded to his latest reverse on Twitter, criticising Brian Kemp, the Republican governor of Georgia, for not granting his request for signature verification of absentee and mail-in ballots and asking "what is he hiding?"

On Saturday, before his rally, the US president called Mr Kemp to urge him to persuade the state legislature to overturn Mr Biden's victory, the Washington Post said.

Covid: Fauci warns Christmas is 'greater challenge' than Thanksgiving - BBC News

Dr Anthony Fauci
Reuters

Top US diseases expert Dr Anthony Fauci has warned of another surge in Covid cases after Christmas - even with the rise following Thanksgiving still being tackled.

He said the longer Christmas/New Year period may be even more of a challenge.

The US is seeing peak infections of close to 200,000 a day on average with record numbers of people in hospital.

California is under a strict new lockdown, with other states announcing record increases.

  • Where has been hit hardest?
  • US vaccine chief sees 'light at end of the tunnel'

The US has recorded more than 14.7 million cases of infection in the pandemic so far and 282,500 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University research, both global highs.

President Donald Trump has been accused of playing down measures such as mask wearing but the US has also had to deal with different states taking different approaches to tackling the virus.

What are Fauci and other experts saying?

Dr Fauci, who President-elect Joe Biden has asked to be his Covid chief medical adviser, told CNN his concerns for Christmas were the same as his concerns for Thanksgiving, "only this may be even more compounded because it's a longer holiday".

He said nobody wanted to modify or shut down the holiday season, but "we're at a very critical time... we've got to not walk away from the facts and the data. This is tough going for all of us".

Millions defied appeals from experts not to travel over the Thanksgiving period - the Sunday after the Thursday 26 November holiday saw the most air travellers since March and the Covid effects are still to be fully felt.

Dr Fauci, who has been part of the Trump administration's response to Covid-19 but has also drawn criticism from the president for his views, said people tended to return to work the week following Thanksgiving but that this is often not the case with Christmas leading into New Year.

On Sunday, former Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner Scott Gottlieb said US deaths could be near 400,000 by the end of January, adding: "As bad as things are right now, they're going to get a lot worse."

Also on Sunday, Dr Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus task force co-ordinator, criticised the Trump administration for flouting guidelines and peddling "myths" about the pandemic.

What are the states doing?

California has ordered much of the state to stay at home, after it set a daily record of 30,000 new cases on Sunday.

In the south of the state, fewer than 15% of intensive care hospital beds are empty.

Dr Fauci told Californian officials they "really don't have any choice" in imposing some of the strictest measures in the US, including bans on restaurant dining and private gatherings.

The lockdown, affecting around 85% of the state's 40 million people, will last for at least three weeks and until Intensive Care Unit capacity goes above 15% again.

New York's Governor Andrew Cuomo has called on retired doctors and nurses to return to work and said if the number of patients in hospital did not decrease in five days, indoor dining in New York City would stop.

But New York did reopen some of its schools on Monday, allowing some in-person instruction at younger ages - a move guided by figures showing lower Covid positivity rates in schools.

New Jersey, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia have also announced record one-day rises in new cases.

Where is the US with vaccination?

The FDA could authorise the Pfizer vaccine - approved in the UK - on Thursday, with vaccinations taking place just a few days later.

They will be rationed and targeted but the Trump administration hopes to vaccinate as many as 24 million people by mid-January.

Health Secretary Alex Azar said the White House would host a vaccine distribution summit on Tuesday to align governors, retail pharmacy chains and shipping firms.

The White House's vaccination campaign, called Operation Warp Speed, has said there could be a significant decrease in death rates among the elderly by the end of January.

Some experts questioned both the number of vaccines projected to be administered by January and the effect on the death rate, given the latest surges.

Meanwhile, Mr Biden on Monday announced his nominations for health secretary - California Attorney General Xavier Becerra - and head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - Rochelle Walensky. Both were welcomed by Dr Fauci.

Mr Biden, who will be sworn in on 20 January, vowed that his administration would be "ready on day one to mobilise every resource of the federal government... and restore the belief that there is nothing beyond America's capacity".

India: Unidentified disease kills one, hundreds hospitalised - Aljazeera.com

The illness left patients experiencing symptoms ranging from nausea and anxiety to loss of consciousness.

One person has died and more than 400 have been taken to hospital in southern India due to an unidentified infection that caused many to fall unconscious following seizures and nausea, according to a senior health department official.

The illness was detected on Saturday evening in Eluru, an ancient city in Andhra Pradesh state famous for its hand-woven products.

Since then, patients have experienced symptoms ranging from nausea and anxiety to loss of consciousness, doctors said.

Government and medical authorities in Andhra Pradesh said more than 200 people were discharged at the weekend and that tests had ruled out COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

Further serological tests are under way.

Separately, India’s federal health ministry said on Monday it would send a team of three medical experts to investigate the outbreak, which it said has infected more than 300 children.

“The children reportedly suffered from dizziness, fainting spells, headache and vomiting,” the ministry said, adding that a door-to-door survey was also under way.

A 45-year-old man who was hospitalised with symptoms similar to epilepsy and nausea died on Sunday evening, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

So far, water samples from affected areas have not shown any signs of contamination, and the chief minister’s office said people not linked to the municipal water supply have also fallen ill.

State Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy visited a government hospital and met patients.

Opposition leader N Chandrababu Naidu demanded on Twitter an “impartial, full-fledged inquiry into the incident”.

Andhra Pradesh is among the states hit worst by COVID-19, with more than 800,000 detected cases. The health system in the state, like the rest of India, has been frayed by the coronavirus.

'Magical' monolith appears on Isle of Wight beach in the UK - BBC News

Monolith, Isle of Wight
PA Media

A monolith has mysteriously appeared in Britain - just days after similar ones were spotted in the US and Romania.

The unusual mirrored structure was discovered on the Isle of Wight, an island off the south coast of England.

Resident Alexia Fishwick said she "was dumbstruck" when she came across it during a beach walk on Sunday and described it as "really quite magical".

A monolith found in Utah last month created wild speculation on social media and apparent copycats.

Many observers have presumed they were art installations left by sculptors.

The metal edifice in Utah was found planted in the ground before it disappeared just days later.

Two other shining metal towers later appeared in Romania and southern California.

Ms Fishwick said: "I'd read about the one in Utah and then Romania, so I knew the significance. Many people took no notice of it."

She said people first thought she had photoshopped the images when she put them online.

Lee Peckham, a lawyer living on the island, said: "I saw it and wondered what it was and thought it a rather strange thing to see on the beach. I wondered who put it there and why."

DJ Rob da Bank, another island resident, was also among those who took a stroll to see the sight for themselves.

He mused: "I'm not sure if it's aliens, a Coldplay PR stunt or a local mirror dealer drumming up trade, but it got us all down the beach anyway."

The National Trust said it believed it owned the site where the structure had been placed.

A spokesman said: "Once we have had time to investigate, we will decide the best course of action.

"We were unaware that this monolith was going to be placed on the beach. Our rangers on the island are visiting the site to investigate."

The latest structure, on Compton Beach on the west side of the Isle of Wight, is described as about 7.5ft (2.2m) high by 2ft (0.6m) wide.

An anonymous collective called The Most Famous Artist has taken credit for the monoliths in Utah and California.

It posted an image of the Utah monolith on Instagram, with a 45,000 US dollar (£34,000) price tag.

However, when asked about the Isle of Wight structure, it said: "The monolith is out of my control at this point. Godspeed to all the aliens working hard around the globe to propagate the myth."

  • People have tracked down the mystery Utah monolith
  • Mysterious metal monolith found in Utah desert

News of the monolith on the island has caused a stir on social media with some posting in jest - that the monolith - which already has its own Instagram page - could be a portal to another dimension.

In 2001: A Space Odyssey - the 1968 film directed by Stanley Kubrick - imposing black monoliths created by an unseen alien species appear in the movie, based on the writings of novelist Arthur C Clarke.

Most observers reflecting on their trip to the mysterious monolith suspected it was left by an artist rather than an alien species.

In total 380 have fallen ill and officials are trying to determine the cause of the new illness.

So far, water samples from affected areas have not shown any signs of contamination, although the sick are thought to have collected their water from the same source.

According to reports, a note released by Andhra Pradesh's health department said initial blood tests did not find any evidence of a viral infection, such as Japanese encephalitis, dengue or chikungunya - diseases which are caused by mosquito bites.

It comes as India continues to be badly hit by rising coronavirus cases.

According to Johns Hopkins University, which is tracking the pandemic worldwide, India has recorded more than 9.6 million cases, second only to the US, and more than 140,500 deaths - third to the US and Brazil.

Andhra Pradesh state is among those worst hit by the virus with more than 800,000 detected cases.

The health system in the state, like the rest of India, has been frayed by the resulting pressure.
