Israel, Morocco agree to normalise relations in US-brokered deal - Al Jazeera English

Israel and Morocco agreed on Thursday to normalise relations in a deal brokered with the help of the United States, making Morocco the fourth Arab country to set aside hostilities with Israel in the past four months.

As part of the agreement, US President Donald Trump agreed to recognise Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara, where there has been a decades-old territorial dispute with Morocco pitted against the Algeria-backed Polisario Front, a breakaway movement that seeks to establish an independent state in the territory.

Trump sealed the agreement in a phone call on Thursday with Morocco’s King Mohammed VI.

Morocco is the fourth country since August to strike a deal aimed at normalising relations with Israel. The others were the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Sudan.

Palestinians have been critical of the normalisation deals, saying Arab countries have set back the cause of peace by abandoning a long-standing demand that Israel gives up land for a Palestinian state before it can receive recognition.

Palestinian officials reacted angrily to the announcement. Bassam as-Salhi, a member of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s Executive Committee, condemned the deal.

“Any Arab retreat from the [2002) Arab Peace Initiative, which stipulates that normalisation comes only after Israel ends its occupation of Palestinian and Arab lands, is unacceptable and increases Israel’s belligerence and its denial of the Palestinian people’s rights,” Salhi said.

In Gaza, Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem said: “This is a sin and it doesn’t serve the Palestinian people. The Israeli occupation uses every new normalisation to increase its aggression against the Palestinian people and increase its settlement expansion.”

Moroccan King Mohammmed told Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in a phone call on Thursday that Rabat stands by a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a royal court statement said.

The king added negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians are the only way to reach a final, lasting and comprehensive solution to the conflict.

Economic cooperation

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the normalisation deal with Morocco as “another great light of peace”, saying there would be direct flights between the countries and the opening of diplomatic missions.

Under the agreement, Morocco will establish full diplomatic relations and resume official contacts with Israel, grant overflights, and also direct flights to and from Israel for all Israelis.

“They are going reopen their liaison offices in Rabat and Tel Aviv immediately with the intention to open embassies. And they are going to promote economic cooperation between Israeli and Moroccan companies,” White House Senior Advisor Jared Kushner told reporters.

Kushner said it was an “inevitability” that Saudi Arabia will also recognise Israel.

The White House has tried to get Saudi Arabia to sign on to a normalisation deal with Israel, believing if they agreed other Arab nations would follow. But Saudi Arabia has signalled it is not ready.

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud said last week Riyadh would only consider such a move if a peace deal “delivers a Palestinian state with dignity and with a workable sovereignty that Palestinians can accept”.

Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst Marwan Bishara said Thursday’s announcement was another example of “America as a diplomatic mercenary on behalf of Israel”.

“Let’s call it what it is – the imperial proclamation. At the end of the day, Washington is using its influence around the world on behalf of Israel, or rather Israel is outsourcing American power for its own benefit in the greater Middle East,” said Bishara.

‘Not a realistic option’

The US will also recognise Morocco’s claim over Western Sahara, the former Spanish North African territory that has been a long-running dispute that has confounded international negotiators for decades, a White House statement said.

“The United States believes that an independent Sahrawi state is not a realistic option for resolving the conflict and that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only feasible solution,” it said.

“We urge the parties to engage in discussions without delay, using Morocco’s autonomy plan as the only framework to negotiate a mutually acceptable solution.”

Kushner added recognising Moroccan sovereignty in the Western Sahara, “is something that has been talked about for a long time but that is something that seems inevitable at some point”.

“It is something that we think advances the region and helps bring more clarity to where things are going,” he said.

A representative of the Polisario Front independence movement for Western Sahara said it “regrets highly” the US decision, adding it was “strange but not surprising”.

“This will not change an inch of the reality of the conflict and the right of the people of Western Sahara to self determination,” the Polisario’s Europe representative Oubi Bchraya said. “The Polisario will continue its struggle.”

Morocco’s king lauded the “historic” US recognition of sovereignty over Western Sahara. Morocco’s Royal Court said the United States will open a consulate in Western Sahara as part of its deal.

“This is the United States being now the only Western nation to recognise Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara,” Al Jazeera’s Kimberly Halkett reported from Washington, DC. “There’s going to be a tough choice for President-elect [Joe] Biden when he comes in: is he going to affirm what Donald Trump has done, or is he going to have make the decision to reverse it?”

Long history

Morocco, a country with centuries of Jewish history, has long been rumoured to be ready to establish ties with Israel.

Before Israel’s establishment in 1948, Morocco was home to a large Jewish population, many of whose ancestors migrated to North Africa from Spain and Portugal during the Spanish Inquisition.

Today, hundreds of thousands of Israeli Jews trace their lineage to Morocco, making it one of the country’s largest sectors of Israeli society, and a small community of Jews, estimated at several thousand people, continues to live in Morocco.

Israeli cabinet minister Rafael Peretz described Thursday’s announcement as “historic and joyous”.

“My parents, who immigrated from Morocco and left their entire lives behind, always spoke of peace and about good relations with the Arab neighbours in Morocco,” he tweeted.

The North African country has for years had informal ties with Israel.

Israel and Morocco established low-level diplomatic relations during the 1990s following Israel’s interim peace accords with the Palestinians, but those ties were suspended after the outbreak of the second Palestinian uprising in 2000.

Since then, however, the informal ties have continued, and an estimated 50,000 Israelis travel to Morocco each year on trips to learn about the Jewish community and retrace their family histories.

Gulf crisis next?

With Trump to leave office on January 20, the Morocco deal could be among the last his team, led by Kushner and US envoy Avi Berkowitz, is able to negotiate before they give way to President-elect Joe Biden’s incoming administration.

Much of the momentum behind the deal-making has been to present a united front against Iran and roll back its regional influence.

One more Middle East breakthrough is possible. Last week Kushner and his team travelled to Saudi Arabia and Qatar seeking an end to a three-year rift between Doha and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

A tentative deal has been reached on this front but it was far from clear whether a final agreement to end a blockade of Qatar will be sealed. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt have maintained a diplomatic, trade and travel embargo on Qatar since mid-2017.

While Biden is expected to move US foreign policy away from Trump’s “America First” posture, he has indicated he will continue the pursuit of what Trump calls “the Abraham Accords” between Israel and Arab and Muslim nations.

Azerbaijan celebrates Nagorno-Karabakh victory, Erdogan attends - Aljazeera.com

More than 3,000 soldiers took part in the military parade as Turkish president reaffirms alliance and condemns Armenia.

A military parade was held on Thursday in the Azerbaijani capital in celebration of the peace deal with Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh that saw Azerbaijan reclaim much of the breakaway region along with surrounding areas.

The agreement took place exactly a month ago and put an end to six weeks of fierce fighting over Nagorno-Karabakh. It was seen as a big victory in Azerbaijan, but prompted mass protests in Armenia, with opposition supporters demanding the country’s prime minister resign over his handling of the conflict.

Nagorno-Karabakh lies within Azerbaijan but has been under the control of ethnic Armenian forces backed by Armenia since a war there led to a ceasefire in 1994. That war left Nagorno-Karabakh itself and substantial surrounding territory in Armenian hands.

More than 3,000 soldiers took part in the parade on Thursday, and dozens of military vehicles drove through Baku. A flyover of helicopters and fighter planes completed the event.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attended the parade. Turkey strongly backed Azerbaijan during the conflict.

A Turkish commando brigade took part in the parade in which Turkish drones were also put on display. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev thanked Turkey for its support in his speech.

“From the first hours of the war, we felt the support of Turkey,” Aliyev said. “This is an example of our unity, our brotherhood.” The Azerbaijani president said the country was able to “restore historical justice” and blamed Armenia for starting the fighting.

Erdogan in his speech also took aim at Armenia and expressed hope the country would “take lessons” from the defeat and take steps that would pave the way for a new era in the region.

“We hope that Armenian leaders will assess this carefully and take courageous steps to build a future based on peace and stability,” Erdogan said.

He reiterated Turkey’s continued support to Azerbaijan: “As long as Turkey and Azerbaijan work hand in glove, they will continue to overcome all difficulties and run from one success to the next.”

In 44 days of fighting that began in late September and left more than 5,600 people dead on both sides, mostly soldiers, the Azerbaijani army advanced deep into Nagorno-Karabakh, forcing Armenia to accept the peace deal. The Russia-brokered pact took effect on November 10 and ended the violence.

Thousands in Armenia have since regularly protested, demanding that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan steps down. The country’s opposition leaders hold Pashinyan responsible for failing to negotiate an earlier end to the hostilities at terms that could have been more beneficial for Armenia. They have emphasised, however, that the opposition was not pushing for an annulment of the peace deal.

As Aliyev and Erdogan watched the parade in Baku, several thousand people in Armenia’s capital demonstrated in front of the government building, calling for Pashinyan’s resignation. Protesters tried to enter the building, hoping to meet with the prime minister, but were deterred by police. Dozens have been detained.

Beirut explosion: Lebanon's caretaker PM Hassan Diab and three former ministers charged - Sky News

Lebanon's caretaker prime minister and three former ministers have been charged over the huge explosion at a Beirut port that killed almost 200 people and injured 6,500 others.

The country's official news agency reported charges have been filed against Hassan Diab and former finance minister Ali Hassan Khalil, as well as former ministers of public works, Ghazi Zeiter and Youssef Fenianos.

Responding to the charges, Mr Diab said in a statement his conscience was clear over the August 4 explosion in Lebanon's capital, after Judge Fadi Sawwan charged the four politicians with negligence leading to deaths.

Mr Diab said he was confident that his hands were clean and that he had dealt transparently with the file of the blast, adding that he was surprised to be targeted in the probe.

Top security officials and politicians knew the large stockpile of explosive material that ignited the explosion was stored at the port, but did nothing about it.

It emerged that 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate - used as a fertiliser and in explosives - was left in a warehouse for six years.

The four politicians are the most senior people to be indicted so far in the secret investigation.

More from Beirut

Anger had been building up over the slow investigation, a lack of answers and the fact that no senior officials had been indicted.

About 30 other security officials and port and customs officials have also been detained.

The blast, which appeared to have been caused by a fire igniting 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate left unsecured in a warehouse, was felt as far away as Cyprus,

Protests erupted in the city following the disaster as residents blamed the country's leaders for what happened.

State security compiled a report about the dangers of storing the material at the port and sent a copy to the offices of the president and prime minister on 20 July.

An investigation is focused on how the ammonium nitrate came to be stored at the port and why it was knowingly kept there.

The blast levelled the port, destroyed large parts of the city and forced around 300,000 people out of their homes.

Mr Diab, a former university professor, resigned few days after the blast, along with the country's entire government.

Mr Zeiter was transport and public works minister in 2014, while Mr Fenianos had the role from 2016, until early 2020. Mr Khalil was finance minister in 2014, 2016 and until this year.

Both Mr Khalil and Mr Fenianos were sanctioned by the US in September - the first two officials outside of the Hezbollah group to face such measures.

One month after the August explosion, a huge fire broke out at Beirut's port, frightening residents who were traumatised by the previous blast.

Taiwan earthquake: Huge 6.2 quake strikes off coast of Taiwan - Daily Express

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake occured at 1.19pm local time.

It struck 26km east of Yilan, and had a depth of 74.6km.

Tremors from the quake have been felt as far away as Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Observatory, which is a weather forecast agency of the government of Hong Kong, wrote on Twitter: "The Observatory received reports of locally felt earth tremors."

There have been no immediate reports of injuries or substantial damage to structures.

The Taipei City Government has confirmed the subway system is operating as normal with no immediate reports of any issues.

But the Twitter account NERV, which posts disaster information and warnings for Japan, warned of the "possibility of a tsunami".

The service tweeted: "At around 10:19pm, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake occurred near Taiwan at a depth of 100km.

"The est. maximum intensity is 3. We'll let you know as soon as more detailed information becomes available."

A short while later, NERV tweeted: "An earthquake occurred near Taiwan at around 10:19pm.

"If the earthquake occurred offshore, there is a possibility of a tsunami.

"As a precaution, stay away from rivers, lakes, and beaches until we have more information."

Twiwan, which is a self-ruled island that China has claimed ownership of, is a hotspot for earthquakes as it is located near the junction of two tectonic plates.

In 1999, more than 2,000 people were killed after a huge 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck the country.

Four years ago in 2016, over 100 people died following an earthquake in southern Taiwan.

This is a breaking story. More to follow...

Chinese embassy in US blames hackers for retweet of Trump's election fraud claim - Sky News

The Chinese embassy in the US has said its Twitter account was hacked after it retweeted a baseless claim from President Donald Trump that the Democrats cheated in the election.

"If somebody cheated in the Election, which the Democrats did, why wouldn't the Election be immediately overturned? How can a Country be run like this?," Mr Trump tweeted on Wednesday, without any evidence.

The social media post was retweeted by the Chinese embassy - and the moment was captured by a Reuters reporter who posted an image of the retweet on his Twitter account and wrote: "Interesting retweet."

The Chinese embassy claimed it was hacked and had not retweeted anything on Wednesday.

It tweeted: "The Chinese Embassy twitter account was hacked this afternoon and we condemn such an act. For clarification, the Embassy didn't do any retweeting on Dec.9."

Twitter had labelled Mr Trump's tweet, saying: "This claim about election fraud is disputed."

Mr Trump has consistently made allegations about voter and election fraud without offering any proof - claims that have been repeatedly rejected by state and federal officials.

More from China

In his latest legal effort to overturn the election, the president and the 17 states that backed him have thrown their weight behind a Texas lawsuit against the states of Michigan, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

The president is asking the Supreme Court to prevent those states from participating in the all-important Electoral College vote on Monday.

Election law experts have said the Texas lawsuit stands little chance of success and lacks legal merit.

Donald Trump says Democrats 'cheated'

The retweet dispute also comes just days after China criticised the US over sanctions against Chinese officials for their actions in Hong Kong.

China's foreign ministry summoned the top US diplomat in China to express "strong indignation and strong condemnation" and vowed to take "reciprocal" action.

The US on Monday imposed financial sanctions and a travel ban on 14 Chinese officials over their role in adopting a national security law for Hong Kong, and Beijing's disqualification last month of elected opposition legislators in Hong Kong.

China's grip on Hong Kong tightens

China has been accused of breaking the "one country, two systems" pledge to maintain greater political and economic freedoms, made when the UK handed back the territory in 1997.

Many around the world believe the territory's controversial new security law will violate Hong Kong's traditional liberties, including a free press, independent judiciary, and the right to protest.

Beijing insists Hong Kong's freedoms will be protected and that the law is necessary to restore order to the city.

Joe Biden's son Hunter says he is under investigation over taxes - BBC News

Joe Biden embraces his son Hunter Biden at an election rally, after the news media announced that Biden has won the 2020 U.S. presidential election over President Donald Trump, in Wilmington, Delaware, U.S., November 7, 2020.
Reuters

US President-elect Joe Biden's son Hunter has said his tax affairs are under investigation.

The investigation is being conducted by federal prosecutors in Delaware.

Hunter Biden said he took the case "very seriously" but was confident an "objective review" would show he had handled his affairs "legally and appropriately".

The Biden-Harris transition team said the president-elect was "deeply proud of his son".

A statement from the team said Hunter had "fought through difficult challenges, including the vicious personal attacks of recent months, only to emerge stronger".

Hunter said he learned of the investigation on Tuesday. He did not disclose any further details.

Hunter, 50, was a frequent target of Republican criticism during the 2020 election campaign.

His presence on the board of a Ukrainian energy firm while his father was vice-president came under scrutiny during the impeachment trial against Donald Trump earlier this year.

Mr Trump was accused of pressing Ukraine to probe what the Bidens were doing in the country, and using military aid as a bargaining chip. He was impeached by the House, where the Democratic Party has a majority, but cleared by the Republican-dominated Senate.

The investigation into Hunter's tax affairs comes as the president-elect assembles his Cabinet. If the case is still ongoing when Mr Biden is sworn into office next month, his pick for attorney general could have oversight of the investigation, AP news agency notes.

The spotlight stays on Hunter

Analysis box by Anthony Zurcher, North America reporter

The presidential election is over, but it seems President-elect Joe Biden's son Hunter - a regular target of Republican attacks during the campaign - is going to stay in the news.

The revelation that Hunter is under tax investigation is not entirely surprising. There have been hints of such an inquiry for months. With official confirmation, however, comes further scrutiny - and potential political headaches for the president-elect.

If Republicans maintain control of the US Senate, hearings into Hunter's finances - and any ties to President Biden - are a foregone conclusion. And if the investigation turns into formal charges, political concerns for the Biden family could turn into very real legal ones.

While Donald Trump's critics will be quick to accuse the outgoing president of orchestrating this investigation as political reprisal, the US attorney behind it - David Weiss of Delaware - is a veteran prosecutor. Although he was appointed by the current president, Weiss also worked as a deputy in the office, and as interim US attorney, during Democrat Barack Obama's presidency.

Hunter Biden, in a statement, says he acted "legally and appropriately". If so, this matter will eventually fade from view. Being under the federal criminal microscope, however, is never a pleasant affair.
