New Year's Eve: Muted celebrations for London and New York, but Australia and NZ welcome in 2021 - Sky News

New Year's Eve celebrations were muted by coronavirus restrictions in London and New York, while countries including Australia and New Zealand welcomed in 2021 with impressive firework displays.

Big Ben ushered in 2021 with its chimes in an eerily subdued London, which would typically be packed with swathes of people waiting to watch a dazzling display of fireworks.

Bars and pubs that in past years would be filled with people singing Auld Lang Syne sat empty and silent across the whole country.

UK welcomes in the New Year

In Edinburgh, where Hogmanay is one of the most anticipated festivals of the year, only small groups of people were seen in streets that would typically be thronging with revellers.

There was also a crackdown on mass gatherings in New York, with police officers deployed in Times Square to turn away party-goers over concerns of the spread of COVID-19.

The ball dropped like always in Times Square, but police fenced off the site synonymous with New Year's Eve to prevent crowds of any size from gathering.

Meanwhile, other parts of the world celebrated in their near-usual style.

More from Covid-19

Australia was among the first nations to ring in 2021 with a made-for-TV-fireworks display which didn't disappoint compared to previous years.

Shortened to seven minutes, the display took place over Harbour Bridge, which was only watched live by those who live in the area and their guests.

The celebrated annual event normally attracts one million people, but this year Australian officials banned people from gathering near the bridge to watch due to coronavirus restrictions.

In Auckland, New Zealand, residents were treated to a five-minute fireworks and light show when the clock struck midnight.

Crowds were allowed to gather in the city to mark the occasion due to the nation's low number of new coronavirus cases.

North Korea began 2021 with crowds in the capital Pyongyang's main square, with a concert and fireworks show held amid COVID-19 restrictions.

State television showed attendees wearing face masks but standing close together, waving glowing lights and balloons.

Taiwan, which has been a success story of the pandemic, hosted its usual fireworks display by its capital city's iconic tower, Taipei 101.

For its annual flag-raising ceremony in front of the Presidential Office Building on New Year's morning, attendance was limited to government officials and invited guests.

Thailand ushered in the New Year with a fireworks display at the Iconsiam mall in Bangkok.

The country imposed a ban on Wednesday on large gatherings and events across the country in an effort to contain its worst coronavirus epidemic yet.

Officials in Hong Kong cancelled the pyrotechnics over Victoria Harbour, as well as the annual iconic Lunar New Year parade in February.

Beijing held a countdown ceremony with just a few invited guests, while other planned events were called off.

In Wuhan, where the pandemic is thought to have originated, thousands gathered at several popular landmarks across the city centre for the countdown to 2021.

Some said they were being cautious, but weren't particularly worried.

Japan rang in the New Year without its annual event at which Emperor Naruhito and other imperial family members greet members of the public.

In Tokyo, not only were all-night trains cancelled on New Year's Eve, but several of the city's big countdown parties, concerts and other seasonal gatherings were called off as well, including the famous Shibuya Scramble Crossing party.

In Ireland, the bells of Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin did not ring in the New Year for the first time in living memory and possibly in centuries.

With the entire country under the toughest COVID-19 restrictions, all New Year's Eve events were moved online.

South African citizens were also urged to cancel parties, with many instead lighting candles as a way to honour health workers and people who have died in the COVID-19 pandemic.

In many European countries, authorities warned they were preparing to clamp down on revellers breaching coronavirus measures, including nightly curfews in France, Italy, Turkey, Latvia, the Czech Republic, and Greece.

"No one will be on the streets after 10pm (Athens) will be a dead city to make sure no more restrictions are imposed," said Greece's public order minister, Michalis Chrisohoidis.

France mobilised 100,000 police and gendarmes to break up New Year's Eve parties and enforce a curfew from 8pm to 6am.

Muted celebrations as UK welcomes 2021 and world says goodbye to a 'different' year - Sky News

The UK has welcomed in 2021, saying goodbye to a year that for many was the strangest, toughest or even worst in recent memory.

It was ushered in by the chimes of Big Ben - an hour after the nation's clock marked the end of the Brexit transition period - without any of the thousands who would normally stand in the street below it to watch a dazzling display of fireworks.

All across the country, bar and pubs that 365 days ago would have been full of people singing Auld Lang Syne and celebrating together were empty and silent.

Westminster Bridge was not empty, despite warnings from the authorities to stay away, with the sounds of car horns blaring out as midnight arrived and a handful of people setting off their own fireworks.

In Edinburgh where Hogmanay is one of the most looked-forward to festivals of the year, only small groups of people were seen in the streets typically thronging with revellers.

One young woman in a group of four from the same household told Sky News: "We're looking forward to the New Year. It has to be better."

Another said: "You've just got to put a positive twist on it. There's no point in being negative. New year... there's a vaccine, everything's good."

More from Covid-19

Earlier, with UK COVID-19 cases reaching their highest ever daily level, one of England's top doctors had implored people not "add fuel to the fire" by meeting up in "close and large groups" risking "further transmission".

The government had run ads pleading with the public to "see in the New Year safely at home".

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon asked her fellow countryfolk to "mark this New Year responsibly and in line with the restrictions... that means no gatherings, no house parties, no first-footing".

Although displays in London, Edinburgh, Manchester and Liverpool had been cancelled, there were a few in other places ahead of midnight, including fireworks at St James' Park in Newcastle and a lightshow in Ironbridge, Shropshire.

Celebrities were among those saying goodbye to what Victoria Beckham called a "different year".

All across the planet, the event was celebrated in ways that were much more muted that usual due to pandemic restrictions on open air gatherings.

Hundreds of millions of people were forced to turn to made-for-TV fireworks displays or calling it a night early since they could not toast the end of 2020 in the presence of friends or strangers.

Yet, in contrast to those countries around the world in various states of lockdown or restrictions, New Zealand and several of its South Pacific island neighbours that also have no active COVID cases held their usual New Year's activities.

Australia was the next to ring in 2021, with seven minutes of pyrotechnics lighting up Sydney Harbour Bridge, but many heeded calls from the authorities to stay at home, leaving the areas surrounding much quieter than usual.

While South Korea cancelled its annual bell-ringing ceremony for the first time since 1953, North Korea pressed ahead with its celebration in Pyongyang, with state media showing residents in face masks filling the main square for a concert and fireworks.

In the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the pandemic started a year ago, large crowds took to the streets. When the clock on the old Hankow Customs House building struck midnight, many cheered and released balloons in the air.

One, 20-year-old student and tourist Yang Wenxuan, said: "I'm so so so incredibly happy. I hope that (in 2021) I can obtain my batchelor's degree and I hope I can find a boyfriend."

Dubai, another of the world's most popular places to be on 31 December, pressed ahead with its plans despite a surge of infections, with the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest tower, lit up by the explosions of fireworks as tens of thousands milled in the streets below.

In France, 100,000 police officers were stationed on the streets to enforce a nationwide curfew.

In New York, where the ball is set to drop in Times Square as always, police have fenced off the site in fear people will gather.

The audience will consist of a few dozen pre-selected key workers - including nurses, doctors, a food shop worker and a pizza delivery man - their families kept two metres apart in socially distanced pens.

New York City mayor Bill de Blasio, who will push the button to start the crystal ball's descent, summed up the mood saying: "It's going to be actually, arguably, the most special, the most poignant, the most moving New Year's Eve.

"In 2021, we're going to show people what it looks like to recover, to come back."

Wuhan locals pack the streets to celebrate New Year as rest of the world suffers under Covid lockdowns - The Sun

PACKED streets and wild New Year celebrations have broken out in the Chinese city of Wuhan where the Covid pandemic began while the rest of the world is locked up at home.

A year ago today, a Covid-19 outbreak was reported in the Hubei province city, which then spread around the world and killed more than 1.8million people.

Remarkably, Wuhan has not reported a new locally transmitted case of the disease since May 10 after lifting one of the strictest lockdowns in the world seven months ago.

In scenes unimaginable in many places around the world, the city's residents have tonight been thronging the street to toast the New Year.

Many gathered in front of Wuhan city hall holding balloons.

Some were wearing masks, others either have them pulled down or were not wearing one at all.

Meanwhile, young people have been cramming into nightclubs.

Some said they were being cautious, but were reportedly not worried about catching Covid.

'NO CASES SINCE MAY'

These images chronicle life in the previously little known city.

About 11 million have been shut off from the rest of China in a surprise overnight lockdown beginning January 23.

Roadblocks were erected and planes, trains and buses were barred from entering the city.

Almost 3,900 of China's officially 4,634 recorded Covid-19 deaths occurred in the industrial city.

But after the lockdown was lifted images have emerged showing hundreds of people packed shoulder-to-shoulder at a water park music festival.

Huge crowds were also seen in Wuhan thronging the streets to celebrate Halloween

And when nightclubs reopened earlier this month, they were packed to the rafters.

Scientists believe that Covid-19 first originated in bats before spreading to humans in Wuhan, possibly at one of the Chinese city's so-called wet markets.

Conspiracy theories about its origins persist, however, with governments suggesting it may have come from the Wuhan Institute of Virology lab.

In his New Year message Chinese president Xi Jinping praised the efforts of his people.

The Communist ruler said:''China has written an epic in fighting Covid-19 as the country put people and lives first and fought the epidemic with unity and perseverance.

"Greatness is forged in the ordinary. Heroes come from the people. Every person is remarkable!''

Paying tribute to medics, he added: "They pooled their drops of strength into tremendous power and built an iron wall to safeguard lives."

In other news, China has confirmed its first case of a mutant strain of Covid-19 which was recently detected in Britain.

The first patient in China with the new coronavirus variant is a 23-year-old woman who flew into Shanghai from Britain on December 14, the Chinese Centre for Disease Control said.

It said the case "poses a great potential threat" to China's efforts to curb and control the spread of the virus.

The new strain — which experts say potentially spreads faster than the original one — has prompted travel restrictions on the UK by more than 50 countries.

This includes China, where the coronavirus first emerged late last year.

But pulling up the drawbridge appears to have failed to stop what has been dubbed as "super-Covid" arriving on its shores.

Elsewhere in the world, people were not joining crowds for the countdown like in Wuhan.

Blue and gold fireworks soared into the sky above the Sydney Opera House as they do every New Year's Eve, but the harbour below was a deserted ghost town, a fittingly creepy send-off for a year that will not be missed.

No light show was to illuminate Beijing from the top of the TV tower.

The lions of London's Trafalgar Square were barricaded off, as was Red Square in Moscow and Madrid's Puerta del Sol.

In Rome, crowds would not assemble in St Peter's, the Pope would lead no Mass, and revelers would not make their yearly dive into the Tiber.

Some cities planned, like Sydney, to launch fireworks over empty streets. Others, such as London and Singapore, just called their displays off. Paris, Rome and Istanbul were under curfew.

The New Year's Eve countdown ball was set to drop on Broadway.

But in place of hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers jammed shoulder-to-shoulder in Times Square, the audience would be a pre-selected group of nurses, doctors, and other key workers, their families kept six feet apart in socially distanced pens.
