Mass New Year party breaks up in France amid coronavirus fears - Al Jazeera English

Police shut down huge party in northwestern France that had been underway since New Year’s Eve in defiance of a curfew.

Revellers on Saturday began leaving an illegal New Year rave party in northwestern France that drew about 2,500 people, led to clashes with police and sparked concerns it could spread the coronavirus.

Police had failed to stop the underground event, set up in two warehouses in Lieuron, south of Rennes in Brittany on Thursday.

Such mass gatherings are strictly prohibited across France to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and a nationwide 8:00pm (19:00 GMT) curfew, which was not lifted for New Year, applies across the country.

The local prefecture said on Saturday the music had been switched off after two nights and the first revellers began leaving the site before dawn.

“There has been no intervention by security forces,” it said in a statement, but added that police were checking all those leaving the site.

Only “a few hundred” revellers remained, the prefecture said, quoting an association that oversees the security risks of such events.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Twitter that the large police presence at the site had led to the breakup of the rave “without violence”.

About half of the car park at the site was empty Saturday morning, according to AFP news agency.

Local gendarmes tried to “prevent this event but faced fierce hostility from many partygoers” who set one of their cars on fire and threw bottles and stones, the prefecture said in a statement.

Those present had come from across France and even abroad, it said.

Prosecutors have opened an investigation into the illegal organisation of a musical gathering and premeditated violence against people in authority.

Participants interviewed by AFP said the revellers had included partygoers from foreign countries, including Spain and the United Kingdom.

One participant, who gave his name as Jo from the Alsace region of eastern France and refused to be identified further, said they had all met at a designated spot on Thursday evening in the parking lot of a shopping centre.

Then the convoy headed for Lieuron where the police tried to prevent them from passing, he said.

He also acknowledged that “very few had respected social distancing” at the event.

French authorities have been worried about mass rave parties throughout the pandemic, but New Year’s night was a particular concern.

In the southern city of Marseille, security forces halted an illegal party of about 300 people, police said.

More than 150 people were warned, and the three suspected organisers were arrested.

France’s cumulative total of cases stands at 2,697,014, the fifth highest in the world.

President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday said everyone in France should be able to get a COVID-19 vaccine if they want it, amid broad criticism over the slowness of the vaccination programme.

Iran to increase uranium enrichment in breach of nuclear deal - Sky News

Iran has signalled that it intends to start enriching uranium to 20% purity, in its most significant breach yet of the 2015 nuclear deal.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said Iran had informed it of plans to enhance enrichment at its Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant, 20 miles northeast of the city of Qom.

In a statement, the agency said: "Iran has informed the agency that in order to comply with a legal act recently passed by the country's parliament, the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran intends to produce low-enriched uranium (LEU) up to 20% at the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant."

The IAEA did not say when Iran plans to boost enrichment but its inspectors are in the country and have regular access to Fordow.

The enrichment plant is about the size of a football field, shielded by mountains and protected by anti-aircraft guns.

Under the 2015 nuclear deal, no enrichment is to take place there and it was meant to have been turned into a research and development site.

The agreement also set other conditions, including a 3.67% limit on the purity to which Iran can enrich uranium.

More from Iran

It has gone to 4.5% so far, well short of the 20% it achieved before the deal and the 90% that is weapons-grade.

The Iranians began violating the agreement after US President Donald Trump pulled his country out in 2018, leaving only the other signatories - Iran, the European Union and the other permanent members of the UN Security Council.

Joe Biden has vowed to re-join the deal when he takes over from Mr Trump later this month, but Iran's further breach will make this more difficult for him.

It is also thought the move from Iran is aimed at pressuring Europe into easing sanctions, something that was meant to happen in exchange for Iran's compliance with the deal.

However, the US re-imposed sanctions after it pulled out.

Experts say Iran has enough low-enriched uranium for at least two nuclear weapons, although Iran has always said its nuclear programme is peaceful.

Deaths reported worldwide during New Year’s Eve celebrations - Al Jazeera English

At least 11 people killed and several injured during New Year’s Eve celebrations across the world on Thursday.

At least 11 people were killed and several injured during New Year’s Eve celebrations across the world on Thursday.

Eight young men and women were reported dead in a cottage in southwest Bosnia and Herzegovina, apparently from carbon monoxide poisoning during a New Year’s Eve celebration, police said on Friday.

Police responded to a call about 10am (09:00 GMT) and went to a house in Tribistovo where several people were found dead.

Bosnian and Croatian media said the eight were high school and university students.

In Turkey, Galatasaray’s Norwegian footballer Omar Elabdellaoui was hospitalised with eye injuries after an accident with fireworks.

Elabdellaoui injured both his eyes, according to Dr Vedat Kaya of Liv Hospital in Ankara.

While the Norwegian has not lost his sight, one eye was much more seriously injured than the other, Kaya said, adding that the player was “better today” but that it was too early to write off potential long-term consequences.

Meanwhile, in eastern France, a 25-year-old man was killed when fireworks exploded after he went to inspect them.

In Germany, at least one death was reported early on Friday of a 24-year-old man in the eastern town of Rietz-Neuendorf, who died when homemade fireworks detonated shortly after midnight.

Another case of improvised fireworks explosion left one man’s life in danger and two others injured near the western German city of Osnabrueck. They were working with explosives, trying to create a pyrotechnic, when there was an explosion shortly after midnight.

At least one more injury was reported in the central village of Springstille when a firework detonated prematurely late on Thursday.

After they were barred from setting off fireworks in public spaces, some Berliners instead tried to launch them from their homes on New Year’s Eve, leading to dozens of fires across the German capital.

Between midnight (23:00 GMT) and just six minutes later, the Berlin fire service said it was called to 18 fires, with more following deeper into the night. No one was initially reported seriously injured.

Meanwhile, police in the western city of Essen also reported being attacked with professional-grade fireworks by a gang of youths.

In Dortmund, a group of about 50 people caused a further ruckus: several of them emptied fire extinguishers in the street, threw fireworks at passing cars and set a rubbish container on fire.

Celebratory gunfire killed a Syrian woman living as a refugee in eastern Lebanon and struck an aeroplane parked at Beirut’s airport in two separate incidents, the Lebanese official news agency said on Friday.

At least one civilian was killed and 25 injured in celebratory gunfire and fireworks marking the New Year in different parts of Iraq, a health official said on Friday.

Fireworks were set off in several parts of the country despite a government ban on mass gatherings to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

WW3 fears: Iran issues terrifying threat to US as military put on standby - 'We are ready' - Daily Express

Iran’s foreign ministry has issued an ominous warning to Washington just days after US war planes were spotting flying over the Middle East. A spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: “We will respond strongly to any US attack. We are ready for any scenario."

The presence of US forces in the region and the threat from Tehran, comes ahead of the one year anniversary of the killing Iran’s military general Qassem Soleimani.

On Wednesday, the US military flew two B-52 bombers over the Middle East and close to Iranian air space.

Speaking on Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif accused US President Donald Trump of playing war games.

In a post on Twitter, he said: "Instead of fighting Covid in US, @realDonaldTrump & cohorts waste billions to fly B52s & send armadas to OUR region.

“Intelligence from Iraq indicate plot to FABRICATE pretext for war."

The US military have confirmed the fighter jets have since left the region.

It is understood, officials in Washington are wary of a retaliation attack from Iranian forces on the anniversary of the death of general Soleimani.

In another sign of aggression from Iran, Hossein Dehghan, a military adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warned Tehran was capable of launching an attack on any US base in the region.

The top military official was travelling through Baghdad, when his two-vehicle convey was struck by three US missiles on January 3.

Four days after the attack, Iranian forces launched a rocket attack on US facilities in Iraq, including near the embassy.

No known Iran-backed groups have claimed responsibility for the incident.

Frexit next! Macron warned 2021 is the year for a French referendum on EU membership - Daily Express

Brexit: Nigel Farage says there will be no EU in ten years

Britain fully left the EU at 11pm on New Year's Eve after being tied to the bloc Single Market and Customs Union during the near year-long Brexit transition period between the two sides. This final move has sealed the UK's departure from the EU, freeing the nation from Brussels' rules and regulations to become its own independent country. M Macron has been hugely critical of Brexit since the historic referendum in 2016, frequently threatening to deadlock talks by voting down agreements if the terms did not adhere to their red lines.

But now huge pressure is building on the French President with the coined phrase Frexit – created to try and force France's own exit from the EU – gathering significant pace on social media.

Charles-Henri Gallois, the President of Generation Frexit, the political movement set up in July 2020, hailed Britain following Brexit, adding he hopes 2021 "will allow the French people to also be able to express themselves democratically on our membership of the EU".

He wrote on Twitter: "I wish you all a very happy new year 2021!

"I also wish my British friends a #MerryBrexmas!" including a British flag on the tweet.

"I hope that this year 2021 will allow the French people to also be able to express themselves democratically on our membership of the EU!"

But M Gallois then ramped up his campaign for Frexit, praising Britain for taking back control and warning France's departure from the EU is also "possible and desirable"

The Generation Frexit President posted a picture of Boris Johnson celebrating from Downing Street after sealing the post-Brexit trade deal with the EU, and wrote: "It's UK Day 1 who took back control!

"Leaving the EU is possible and desirable!

"Hopefully the same will happen soon in France!"

On Wednesday, Mr Johnson tweeted a picture of him signing the EU trade deal, accompanied with the post: "By signing this deal, we fulfil the sovereign wish of the British people to live under their own laws, made by their own elected Parliament.

Generation Frexit retweeted this picture and wrote: "The sovereign wish of a people to live according to its own laws: the United Kingdom is renewing this fundamental right that the European Union confiscated from them for too long.

"Let France be next and #TakeBackControl as well, leaving this harmful, paralysing and ruinous EU."

M Gallois retweeted the same picture from the Prime Minister, writing: "It's done and effective tomorrow at midnight!

"The House of Commons approves the deal with 521 votes for and 73 against!

"They're taking back control! #Brexit #TakeBackControl."

Earlier in the day, the Generation Frexit President ramped up his campaign by tweeting: "If France is a democratic country, we must also give voice to the people about our EU membership.”

brexit timeline

He also posted a link to the website referendum-frexit.org, which warns that following Brexit, France’s contribution to the EU will increase by €5billion a year to €29billion, which is the "equivalent of 720 hospitals or 14,000 schools that will not be built".

The website adds the "EU recovery plan" from the coronavirus pandemic will "bind France until 2058 and cost us dearly: €40 billion net.

"It is much more than if we had taken this loan directly on our own.

"Moreover, we will not have the free use of this money! It is the European Commission which will decide."

"A fortiori when we know that the membership conditions have changed significantly since the vote on the Maastricht Treaty!"

The website also warns: "What is all this money going to be used for? The EU has been around for 27 years.

"It has already cost us hundreds of billions of euros. However, the situation in France has continued to deteriorate. With covid-19, we are now in full collapse.

"The time has therefore come to take stock of the European Union.

"We must vote by referendum on our membership of the European Union: respect for democracy and the future of the French people require it."

Covid: Illegal New Year party at Essex church broken up - BBC News

All Saints' Church, East Horndon, near Brentwood after rave
Essex Police

A 500-year-old church was damaged during an illegal New Year's Eve party at the venue.

All Saints' Church in East Horndon, near Brentwood, was broken into before crowds entered, Essex Police said.

Officers were threatened and had objects thrown at them as they dispersed hundreds of people and seized equipment, the force said.

Two men from Harlow, aged 27 and 22, and a 35-year-old from Southwark were arrested.

They were held on suspicion of public order and drugs offences.

'Devastating'

Astrid Gillespie, a volunteer with the Friends of All Saints', said event organisers had smashed a window to put in an extractor fan unit and wired sound equipment into the church's fuse box.

She said: "It was a professional set-up, they'd hired Portaloos, they had a bar area where you had to exchange tokens... obviously it's a mess.

"It's such a beautiful church, to find out it's been damaged is devastating."

The conservation group believes it will cost at least £1,000 to repair the Tudor building.

Police later dispersed about 100 people at an illegal party at an abandoned warehouse in Brentwood and made two arrests.

A woman was also fined £10,000 for organising a house party with 100 guests at Bury Road, Sewardstonebury, in Epping Forest.

Officers seized equipment and issued 25 fixed penalty notices.

Assistant Chief Constable Andy Prophet said: "Unfortunately, there were [those] who decided to blatantly flout the coronavirus rules and regulations and, ultimately, they decided that partying was more important than protecting other people.

"We've seized their equipment, arrested five people, and issued a large number of fines to those who think this behaviour is acceptable."
