Anthony 'AJ' Elfalak: Missing Australian boy with autism found alive in creek less than 500m from home - Sky News

A three-year-old Australian boy with autism who went missing on Friday has been found sitting in a creek less than 500 metres from his home.

Hundreds of people had been searching for Anthony "AJ" Elfalak - who has autism and is non verbal - since he went missing from his family's remote rural property in Australia three days ago.

A police helicopter spotted him sitting in shallow water in a creek bed late on Monday morning, close to the family home near the village of Putty, north of Sydney.

His father, Anthony Elfalak, said AJ had been bitten by ants, had diaper rash and suffered abrasions.

"It's a miracle," he said, after he and his wife, Kelly Elfalak, were reunited with their son.

"He's just clinging to mum. As soon as he heard his mum, he opened his eyes and looked at her and fell asleep."

He is in good condition but has been taken to hospital for observation.

AJ was found in an area that had been searched before, with police assuming he spent the entire time in the woods.

He was found cupping water in his hands to drink, which played a key factor in his survival police said.

Temperatures in the rugged Australian woodland dipped as low as six degrees Celsius overnight.

AJ was kneeling in the creek when a state emergency service officer reached him and placed a hand on the boy's shoulder, Chief Inspector Simon Merrick said.

The officer "stated that he (AJ) turned towards him with a massive smile on his face that he will not forget", Mr Merrick added.

The paramedic who examined AJ, Gerry Pyke, described him as a "little survivor".

"Little AJ's condition was quite remarkable," Mr Pyke said. "He was very, very thankful. I could see that in his eyes."

AJ slept in an ambulance after he was reunited with his parents, then woke up hungry.

"He got stuck into about three slices of pizza and a banana so he's pretty good," Mr Pyke added.

Afghanistan live updates: PM to defend his handling of Afghanistan crisis to MPs – as Taliban promises supreme leader will be seen 'soon' - Sky News

Analysis: Fall of Panjshir is crushing blow to hopes of a fightback

The fall of the Panjshir Valley to the Taliban is hugely significant not just because it gives the Taliban full control of Afghanistan territory, writes international affairs editor Dominic Waghorn.

It is also a crushing symbolic blow to hopes of a fightback against the Taliban, at least for now.

When Taliban enemies rallied there for a last stand it was for good reason.

The valley is well protected geographically and was the birthplace of the hero of Afghan resistance against the Soviets, Ahmed Shah Massoud who made it the base of his defiance of Russian occupation.

After the fall of Kabul, Massoud's son fled there to rally resistance against the Taliban.  Remnants of the routed Afghan army and other militia answered his call and hoped to launch a fightback.

For a quarter of a century the Taliban has been unable to make inroads into the Panjshir Valley until now.

Buoyed by the momentum of their victories across the country, bolstered by newly acquired US supplied military hardware, they penetrated its natural defences.

It was only a matter of time before the resistance would crumble and break but it has come quicker than some expected like the Taliban's takeover of the rest of Afghanistan.

The Taliban is now in control of the whole country. It must now prove it can govern and maintain control or risk Afghanistan sliding back into civil war and chaos allowing its enemies to regain a foothold.

But for now its enemies have lost their last holdout and are defeated, captured or scattered.  And the west must decide how best to deal with the new lords of Afghanistan.

Google locks Afghan gov’t emails to keep from Taliban: Report - Al Jazeera English

Gov’t databases, emails could give details on employees of the former administration, contractors, allies, Reuters said.

Google has temporarily locked down an unspecified number of Afghan government email accounts, according to a person familiar with the matter, as fears grow over the digital paper trail left by former officials and their international partners.

In the weeks since the Taliban’s swift takeover of Afghanistan from a US-backed government, reports have highlighted how biometric and Afghan payroll databases might be exploited by the new rulers to hunt their enemies.

In a statement on Friday, Alphabet Inc’s Google stopped short of confirming that Afghan government accounts were being locked down, saying that the company was monitoring the situation in Afghanistan and “taking temporary actions to secure relevant accounts”.

One employee of the former government has told Reuters news agency the Taliban is seeking to acquire former officials’ emails.

Late last month the employee said the Taliban had asked him to preserve the data held on the servers of the ministry he used to work for.

“If I do so, then they will get access to the data and official communications of the previous ministry leadership,” the employee said.

The employee said he did not comply and has since gone into hiding. Reuters is not identifying the man or his former ministry out of concern for his safety.

‘Wealth of information’

Publicly available mail exchanger records show that some two dozen Afghan government bodies used Google’s servers to handle official emails, including the ministries of finance, industry, higher education, and mines. Afghanistan’s office of the presidential protocol also used Google, according to the records, as did some local government bodies.

Commandeering government databases and emails could provide information about employees of the former administration, ex-ministers, government contractors, tribal allies and foreign partners.

“It would give a real wealth of information,” said Chad Anderson, a security researcher with internet intelligence firm DomainTools who helped Reuters identify which ministries ran which email platform. “Just even having an employee list on a Google Sheet is a big problem,” he said, citing reports of reprisals against government workers.

Mail exchanger records show that Microsoft Corp’s email services were also used by several Afghan government agencies, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the presidency. But it is not clear what steps, if any, the software firm is taking to prevent data from falling into the hands of the Taliban.

Microsoft declined to comment.

Anderson said the Taliban’s attempt to control the US-built digital infrastructure was worth keeping an eye on. Intelligence drawn from that infrastructure, he said, “may be far more valuable to a fledgling government than old helicopters”.

Morocco squad EVACUATED from Guinea's capital Conakry after Coup d'etat led to heavy gunfire - Daily Mail

Morocco squad EVACUATED from Guinea's capital Conakry after Coup d'etat against country's president led to heavy gunfire in the streets and saw players locked down in their hotel as World Cup qualifier is postponed

  • Morocco were in Guinea's capital Conakry for World Cup qualifier on Monday
  • But a Coup d'etat against the country's president saw the game called off
  • Coach Vahid Halilhodzic described gunfire in the streets 'all day' on Sunday
  • The Morocco team were forced to stay in their hotel before being evacuated
  • Four players based in England were in the Morocco squad for the match

The Moroccan national team has been evacuated from the Guinean capital Conakry after their World Cup qualifier there was postponed following a coup d'etat in the West African country.

FIFA and African confederation CAF called off Monday's game following hours of heavy gunfire around the presidential palace and an apparent seizure of power by armed soldiers.

The Morocco squad and coaching staff were left trapped in their hotel, with coach Vahid Halilhodzic describing gunfire 'nearly all day', before they boarded a plane out of Guinea on Sunday night.

'We're at the hotel, gunshots could be heard nearly all day,' Halilhodzic told French newspaper L'Equipe. 'When you hear gunshots outside, safety is not 100 per cent guaranteed.'

The team arrived in Conakry on Friday and had one training session ahead of the match before being locked down in their accommodation.

On Sunday evening, however, the Morocco party was given an escort to the airport and flew out.

Several English-based players are in the Morocco squad - it is captained by Romain Saiss of Wolves, with Ilias Chair of Queens Park Rangers and Watford pair Adam Masina and Imran Louza also there.

Achraf Hakimi of Paris Saint-Germain also plays for the team.

Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat posted footage of the mas crowds on the streets on his Instagram stories account plus images from their flight home.

Earlier on Sunday, soldiers appeared on Guinea's national TV channel claiming to have dissolved the government and suspended the constitution.

The fate of President Alpha Conde was unclear after an unverified video showed surrounded by gun-wielding soldiers.

Guinea's defence minister denied the coup had been successful.

The military are still present in the streets and the country's borders have been sealed with many commercial flights suspended. Morocco travelled to Guinea on a chartered plane.

'The current political and security situation in Guinea is quite volatile and is being closely monitored by FIFA and CAF,' said a statement issued by both bodies.

'To ensure the safety and security of all players and to protect all match officials, FIFA and CAF have decided to postpone the match.

'Rescheduling information will be made available at a later date.'

Taliban claims it now controls whole of Afghanistan 'after taking Panjshir province' - Sky News

The Taliban is claiming it now controls the whole of Afghanistan after taking complete control of Panjshir province, the last area in Afghanistan being held by resistance forces.

A spokesman for the group, Zabihullah Mujahid, issued a statement saying the area had been "completely conquered" and a "number of people" were killed while the "rest fled".

The opposition group, National Resistance Front (NRF), has said the "Taliban's claim of occupying Panjshir is false".

It added: "The NRF forces are present in all strategic positions across the valley to continue the fight.

"We assure the people of Afghanistan that the struggle against the Taliban and their partners will continue until justice and freedom prevails."

Speaking at a news conference, Mr Mujahid also claimed there have been no civilian casualties in the takeover of Panjshir, despite claims that members of the NRF have been killed.

The Taliban added that electricity and internet will resume in Panjshir "from today" and efforts to restart international flights from Kabul will now begin.

Thousands of Taliban fighters overran eight districts of Panjshir province overnight, according to witnesses in the area speaking on condition of anonymity.

Panjshir was the last holdout of anti-Taliban forces in the country and the only province the Taliban had not seized during their sweep last month.

The deputy head of the Taliban's cultural commission, Ahmadullah Wasiq, said the group has "taken control of the most important areas in Panjshir", and are carrying out "operations in a manner that local people are not harmed".

He added: "We are performing operations in a tactical manner to force the resistance movement to vacate the area. As per our information, Panjshir will come under Islamic Emirate very soon.

"The resistance movement is trying to provide hope to the very few people and encourage them to fight through such claims against us, aiming for their financial gains and to hold on to their power.

"But I don't think they would be able to fulfil their desires. As Panjshir is a province of Afghanistan, it should also come under the regime."

The group also sought to assure residents that they would be safe, saying in its statement: "We give full confidence to the honourable people of Panjshir that they will not be subjected to any discrimination, that all are our brothers, and that we will serve a country and a common goal."

In the UK, Armed Forces Minister James Heappey told Sky News that the government had been "hearing that" the Taliban had gained control of Panjshir, but added that "given there is now no UK military presence in the country it is hard to verify that independently."

He said: "I don't think the situation in Panjshir, whatever it is, really changes our calculus. From the moment Kabul fell, the Taliban were effectively the government of Afghanistan with whom we needed to work with, in the immediate term, in order to facilitate the evacuation of UK nationals and other people who were entitled to come to the UK.

"That doesn't mean we recognise the Taliban and if this is correct, that they have been successful in Panjshir overnight, that doesn't change anything in terms of our willingness to recognise them.

"It will be their actions in government, not their military prowess that determines when and how they are recognised in the international community".

The Taliban seized control of the rest of Afghanistan three weeks ago, taking power in Kabul on 15 August after the western-backed government collapsed and President Ashraf Ghani fled the country.

The anti-Taliban fighters had been led by the former vice president and the son of the anti-Taliban fighter, Ahmad Shah Massoud, who was killed just days before the September 11 attacks in the United States.

Massoud's son, Ahmad, had issued a statement Sunday, calling for an end to the fighting that had been blistering in recent days.

He said his forces were ready to lay down their weapons but only if the Taliban agreed to end their assault.

However, late on Sunday, dozens of vehicles loaded with Taliban fighters were seen swarming into Panjshir Valley.

The group later said, on Twitter, that its forces had overrun Rokha district, one of the largest of eight districts in the province.

Several Taliban delegations have attempted negotiations with the holdouts there but talks have failed to gain any traction.

Shark kills surfer in attack at Shelly Beach, near Coffs Harbour, 330 miles north of Sydney - The Times

A surfer who shouted for help during a shark attack died after being pulled out of the water by beachgoers.

The man lost an arm in the attack north of Sydney yesterday and died shortly after ambulance services arrived. Last year was the deadliest since 1929 for shark attacks in Australia, with eight people killed.

One witness said: “I was out in the surf and I heard screaming. I paddled further out to the water and saw a man without an arm, there was lots of blood.

“He was shouting ‘Help me, help me’. People were trying to get him out to shore, it didn’t look good.

“I thought to myself then, this is probably fatal. A couple of guys on the beach started CPR
