Vladimir Putin signs laws annexing four Ukrainian regions as Russian troops pushed back on battlefield - Sky News

Vladimir Putin has signed laws absorbing four Ukrainian regions into Russia, finalising the annexation of the occupied territories in defiance of international outcry.

It follows the so-called referenda in Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, rejected as a sham by Ukraine and the West.

The areas being annexed are not even under full control of Russian forces.

Together with Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, President Putin's total claim amounts to more than 22% of Ukrainian territory, though the exact borders of the four regions he is annexing are still yet to be finally clarified.

The move comes despite Ukrainian troops making "rapid, powerful" advances in the south and east of the country and liberating "dozens" of settlements over the past week - according to Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Defence forces have continued to make significant gains in Kherson Oblast while simultaneously continuing advances in Kharkiv and Luhansk Oblast.

On the battlefield on Wednesday morning, multiple explosions rocked Bila Tserkva, setting off fires at what was described as infrastructure facilities in the city to the south of the capital Kyiv, regional leader Oleksiy Kuleba said on Telegram.

Early indications are that the city was attacked by so-called "kamikaze" or suicide drones, he said.

Bila Tserkva is about 50 miles south of Kyiv.

In his nightly video address on Tuesday, President Zelenskyy said: "The Ukrainian army is advancing in quite a rapid and powerful manner in the south of the country within the context of the current defence operation.

"This week alone, since the Russian pseudo-referendum, dozens of population centres have been liberated.

"These are in Kherson, Kharkiv, Luhansk and Donetsk regions altogether."

Meanwhile, EU member countries have agreed on another round of sanctions against Russia over its aggression against Ukraine, the Czech EU presidency said on Wednesday.

Also, a senior US expert has told Sky News that President Putin's mounting problems in Ukraine make Russia's use of a tactical nuclear weapon more likely.

John Bolton, a former US national security adviser and ambassador to the United Nations, said that the Russian president is in "greater trouble than at any point since the invasion".

Bus plunges into Indian gorge leaving 25 members of wedding party dead - Sky News

At least 25 people travelling as part of a wedding party have died after a bus plunged into a gorge after leaving the road in northern India.

Police told the Press Trust of India news agency there were 45 to 50 people on board the bus when it fell into the ravine in Pauri district in Uttarakhand state on Tuesday evening.

State police and the disaster response force worked alongside locals to rescue 21 people at the site of the crash, police chief Ashok Kumar tweeted.

Vijay Kumar Jogdande, a senior government officer, said they would be carrying out an investigation into the incident and will conduct post-mortems after retrieving the bodies from the site.

Officials were seen clearing the area of bushes and trees to help with the rescue operation as they pulled up an injured person.

Rescuers also retrieved a dead body using ropes, before they were taken away on a stretcher.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said all possible assistance will be given to those affected.

Ukraine war: 'Truly brave and courageous' Irishman Rory Mason killed fighting in Kharkiv - Sky News

A "truly brave and courageous" Irishman has been killed fighting in Ukraine, his family has confirmed.

Rory Mason, 23, from Dunboyne in County Meath, died while fighting for Ukraine's International Legion in the Kharkiv counter-offensive near the Russian border.

His father Rob said: "Rory was a private young man of drive, purpose and conviction.

"Though we are deeply saddened at his death, we are enormously proud of his courage and determination and his selflessness in immediately enlisting to support Ukraine.

"Rory was never political but he had a deep sense of right and wrong and an inability to turn the other way in the face of injustice.

"He had a long-standing interest in eastern Europe, in travel, and in learning new languages, including Russian. Those who fought alongside Rory speak of 'a truly brave and courageous man who could have left at any time but chose not to'.

More on Ireland

"In the words of a colleague who served with him, 'Rory was a man who from a glance could seem shy, however when it came to actions and character he proved, again and again, he was a man of fortitude, principle and honour'.

"Rory was our son and we will miss him enormously. As our family is still trying to come to terms with Rory's death, we would appeal for privacy at this difficult time."

Before joining the International Legion in March, his family said he had been working in Germany to help fund his travel ambitions.

The International Legion paid tribute to their "brother-in-arms", who it said was killed in action when his unit came under attack.

The legion said: "We are in contact with the family and in coordination with them, following their wishes and instructions, the International Legion and the Armed Forces of Ukraine are handling the repatriation process.

"At this time, to protect operational security and the family's privacy we cannot release more information.

"Rory's memory will live on in his unit, in the legion and the armed forces of Ukraine."

Mr Mason leaves behind his parents Rob and Elizabeth and a 22-year-old brother and 21-year-old sister.

South Korea apologises after missile fired in response to North Korea test crashes and sparks panic and confusion - Sky News

South Korea's military has apologised after a missile it launched during a joint live-fire drill with the United States malfunctioned and crashed, causing alarm among residents of the coastal city of Gangneung.

The launch was supposed to be a show of strength in response to North Korea firing a missile over Japan for the first time in five years on Tuesday.

Instead, South Korean residents thought they were under attack from the North, already feeling uneasy over the increasingly provocative weapons tests by Pyongyang.

The panic and confusion only grew as military and government officials provided no explanation about the explosion for hours.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff eventually confirmed a South Korean Hyunmoo-2 missile failed shortly after launch and crashed during the drill, and that no one was hurt.

Footage shared on social media showed an orange ball of flames emerging from an area internet users described as near the air force base.

During the same drill, the US military launched four of its own missiles that are part of the Army Tactical Missile System and South Korea fired another Hyunmoo-2 successfully.

The homegrown missile is key to South Korea's pre-emptive and retaliatory strike strategies against North Korea, and is a version of a Russian-designed Iskander missile, which is also possessed by Pyongyang.

Kwon Seong-dong, a ruling party politician representing Gangneung, wrote on Facebook that a "weapons system operated by our blood-like taxpayer money ended up threatening our own people" and called for an investigation.

South Korea's military later said it was investigating the cause of the missile's "abnormal flight", and apologised for sparking alarm among residents.

South Korea and the US have been conducting firing and bombing drills in the Yellow Sea, including volleys of missiles.

A US aircraft carrier has been redeployed to South Korea's east coast, following yesterday's ballistic missile test by North Korea.

North Korea: US deploys aircraft carrier to the east coast of Korean peninsula after Pyongyang fires missile over Japan - Sky News

A US aircraft carrier is to be redeployed to South Korea's east coast, following Tuesday's ballistic missile test by Pyongyang.

Although the Pentagon has refused to confirm which ship is being sent, the Nimitz-class nuclear-powered supercarrier USS Ronald Reagan is in the area and as recently as last week was taking part in military drills with the South Korean navy.

The flagship of Carrier Strike Group Five, the Ronald Reagan has a compliment of 90 fixed wing aircraft and helicopters.

South Korea and the US have also been conducting firing and bombing drills in the Yellow Sea, including volleys of missiles.

Officials confirmed that a South Korean Hyunmoo-2 missile failed shortly after launch and crashed during the drill, but that no one was hurt.

South Korea's military said that the missile carried a warhead but that it did not explode, and apologised for causing residents to worry.

Tuesday's test by North Korea fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) farther than ever before, sending it soaring over Japan for the first time in five years and prompting a warning for residents there to take cover.

More on North Korea

Analysts and security officials said it may have been a variant of the Hwasong-12 IRBM, which North Korea unveiled in 2017 and said it had the capability to hit US military bases in Guam.

US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida condemned North Korea's test in the "strongest terms," the European Union called it a "reckless and deliberately provocative action", and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the launch and said it was a violation of Security Council resolutions.

The UN Security Council will meet on later today to discuss North Korea at the request of the United States, despite China and Russia telling council counterparts they were opposed to an open meeting of the 15-member body.

Flounder-ing Putin pays recruits' families in fish - The Times

Russia’s beleaguered enlistment officers were given a new way to entice men to join up this week: plying their families with fresh fish.

The local chief of President Putin’s ruling party, Mikhail Shuvalov, promised islanders in the far-eastern Sakhalin island 5kg of flounder, pollock and salmon in exchange for sending their men to a war believed to have already killed 50,000 Russian soldiers.

“We take your husband and you get to eat for a few weeks,” said Anton Barbashin, a Russian political analyst. “That’s a true indication of poverty officials want everyone to forget.” The initiative follows a scheme in Tuva where families receive one sheep, coal, 50kg of flour and two bags of potatoes for each family member dispatched to the front.
