Mob looking for Jews storms airport in Russia's Dagestan and surrounds plane landing from Israel - The Telegraph

A mob of several hundred people stormed an airport in the predominantly Muslim region of Dagestan in Russia, looking for Jews on a plane landing from Israel.

The crowd broke into Makhachkala airport, tearing down the doors and smashing windows, after hearing that a flight from Israel had arrived, video shot from within the mob showed.

Protesters shouting “Allahu Akhbar! Allahu Akhbar!” overwhelmed security and broke into locked offices where airport staff were cowering.

“You will kill somebody,” one of the airport’s security guards shouted as he was shoved aside.

Witnesses said that the police initially watched on without intervening. The mob chanted anti-Semitic slogans and demanded that all Jews should be expelled.

Passengers locked inside surrounded plane

Video footage filmed by a passenger disembarking from a plane also showed the mob running across the airport tarmac. Flustered stewards ordered passengers back onto the plane and then locked the doors.

“Quick, get aboard, get aboard” one of the stewards shouted, as the crowd surged forward.

At least one protester clambered over a wing of the plane before riot police took control of the airport.

Crowds at anti-Israel protests have been growing in Dagestan throughout the week, with thousands joining angry demonstrations against Israeli strikes on Gaza.

Dagestan, which borders Chechnya, is one of the poorest regions in Russia and has been heavily targeted by Russian military recruiters for its war in Ukraine. Makhachkala, Dagestan’s biggest city, has a population of around 600,000 people

Dagestan’s leaders have appealed for calm as fears grow that anger at Israel is straining order in the North Caucasus, bringing it to breaking point.

On Saturday, protesters also surrounded a hotel in Khasavyurt, another town in Dagestan, where they mistakenly believed that Jews were staying.

In Kabardino-Balkaria, a region further to the west, a construction site for a Jewish cultural centre was set on fire.

Israel Gaza live news: Hundreds of patients stuck in Gaza hospitals, UN says - BBC

Copyright: EPA

Children are facing a "catastrophic" situation in Gaza, with parents left with no choice but to give them salty water, according to the UN chidren's aid agency Unicef.

Toby Fricker, a spokesperson for the body, told BBC News the shortages that existed in Gaza even before the current conflict had been "raised to another level".

“One of our staff members, she has a four-year-old, a seven-year-old, and she’s just trying to keep girls safe, to keep them alive on an everyday basis," he said.

“She spoke about how they’re just drinking salty water, and her daughter’s saying, ‘Mum, why can’t I have the normal water back we used to have in regular days?’

Asked about the aid supplies that have now been able to enter Gaza, Fricker said: “There have been supplies in, but it’s extremely minimal.

“When you see the immense needs on the ground that we have, there needs to be many, many, many more."

Fricker called for an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire” and the scaling up of aid supplies into Gaza “on a sustained basis”.

“What we’re seeing now on an everyday basis is that children are being killed, children are being wounded, maimed,” he said.

“And that’s the number one thing - to protect children’s lives and to keep children alive.”

Body of German-Israeli woman abducted from rave party found, family say - The Independent

The family of a tattoo artist feared kidnapped during the Hamas massacre at an Israeli rave have been informed of her death.

Shani Louk, 22, a German-Israeli woman who was believed to have been abducted to the Gaza Strip during Hamas’s October 7 onslaught was previously thought to be alive but in a critical condition.

Her mother recognised her distinctive tattoos and dreadlocks as horror videos emerged of a partially naked body inside a pick-up truck being paraded through the streets by Palestinian gunmen.

On Monday, members of Louk’s family said they received a tragic letter from the Israeli Zaka rescue service saying that a bone from the base of her skull, without which a person cannot survive, had been recovered and identified.

“Unfortunately we received the news yesterday that my daughter is no longer alive,” Louk’s mother Ricarda told the German outlet RTL.

Her sister Adi also confirmed the death of Shani in a post on Instagram.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of my sister, Shani Nicole Z.L. [may her memory be a blessing], who was on October 7, 2023, at the party massacre in Re’im.”

There has been no official confirmation from the German Foreign Ministry and her body has not yet been returned from Gaza.

Clips on social media had shown Ms Louk dancing and singing with her friends just hours before Hamas militants crossed into Israeli territories and opened fire on partygoers.

According to German paper DW, Ms Louk was trying to flee the Nova party when she was captured by Hamas terrorists, who took her into Gaza, where she was filmed being beaten.

Her mother Ricarda Louk had previously told German outlet Bild of her hopes that Shani was injured but alive.

“We now have evidence that Shani is alive but has a serious head injury and is in critical condition. Every minute is critical.

“You have to act quickly and get Shani out of the Gaza Strip!” she declared in a message directed at German officials. “We shouldn’t argue about questions of jurisdiction now!”

The Tribe of Nova festival, held in the semi-wooded fields outside Kibbutz Re’im, just a few miles from Gaza, was one of the first Hamas targets.

Videos show militants arriving on trucks and motorcycles, with gunmen charging into crowds and firing on people as they tried to flee into the fields.

Israeli communities near the festival also came under attack, with Hamas gunmen kidnapping people — soldiers, civilians, the elderly and young children — and killing scores of others.

Anti-Israel mob storms Dagestan airport in Russia - BBC

Israel has urged Russia to protect "all its citizens and all Jews" after a large mob, some shouting antisemitic slogans, stormed a Dagestan airport.

Video footage on social media showed an angry crowd running through the airport in Makhachkala, reportedly seeking people arriving from Tel Aviv.

Some of the crowd ran onto the runway and surrounded aircraft there.

Russia's aviation agency Rosaviatsia said security forces later brought the situation under control.

The authorities closed the airport and it will stay closed until Tuesday, Rosaviatsia says.

Sixty alleged mob participants have been arrested, Russian news agencies say, citing the local interior ministry.

Video clips showed hundreds of people storming the airport terminal, with some waving Palestinian flags.

Local media reported that some demonstrators were stopping cars outside Makhachkala's airport demanding to see documents, in a chaotic search for Israeli passports.

Twenty people were injured, including some police officers, the republic's health ministry said. Some have serious injuries and two are in critical condition.

Dagestan is a mainly Muslim Russian republic in the North Caucasus, home to some 3.1 million people on the western edge of the Caspian Sea. Its government said a criminal case had been opened for civil disorder.

The Israeli prime minister's office said Russia must act decisively against incitement to violence against Jews and Israelis.

A US presidential spokesperson, Adrienne Watson, said in a tweet "the United States vigorously condemns the antisemitic protests in Dagestan".

"The US unequivocally stands with the entire Jewish community as we witness a worldwide surge in antisemitism. There is never any excuse or justification for antisemitism," the White House National Security Council Spokesperson said.

Dagestan's government voiced support for Gaza but appealed to citizens to remain calm and not take part in such protests. There have been widespread protests internationally against Israel's bombing of Gaza.

Dagestan's Governor Sergei Melikov denounced the mob invasion of the airport, in a post on messaging service Telegram.

"There is no honour in hurling abuse at strangers, searching their pockets looking for their passports!" he wrote. He condemned "attacks on women with children".

The mob's actions, he said, were a "stab in the back" for Dagestani patriots, including those fighting in Ukraine in the Russian armed forces.

"What happened at our airport is outrageous and should receive the appropriate assessment from law enforcement. This will be done," he wrote.

Israel's foreign ministry said the Israeli ambassador in Moscow was working with Russian authorities, adding that Israel "views gravely attempts to harm Israeli citizens and Jews anywhere".

"Israel expects the Russian law enforcement authorities to safeguard all Israeli citizens and Jews, whoever they may be, and to take robust action against the rioters and against the unbridled incitement being directed at Jews and Israelis," the ministry statement said.

On Saturday a crowd in the city of Khasavyurt in Dagestan gathered outside a hotel where they believed some Israelis were staying, a local news website, ChP Dagestan, reported.

Later police reportedly let some into the hotel so they could see for themselves that no Israelis were there.

Israel Gaza live news: Gaza doctors say hospital evacuation 'impossible' after Israeli warning - BBC

Video content

Scores of rioters stormed an airport in the Russian region of Dagestan on Sunday, reportedly ahead of the arrival of a flight from the Israeli city of Tel Aviv.

Unverified footage on social media showed crowds, some carrying Palestinian flags, running through a terminal at the Makhachkala airport, forcing open doors and making their way on to a runway. Others were seen stopping cars outside the site and demanding to see documents in an apparent search for Israeli passports.

It is thought the mob intended to attack Israeli or Jewish passengers because of anger over the conflict in Gaza. Dagestan is a constituent republic of Russia, but is located in the country’s far south and has a majority Muslim population.

In a statement, the Israeli government said that it viewed with “utmost gravity attempts to harm Israeli citizens and Jews anywhere”.

“Israel expects the Russian legal authorities to safeguard the well-being of all Israeli citizens and Jews wherever they are and to take strong action against the rioters and against the wild incitement being directed against Jews and Israelis,” it said.

Dagestan's health ministry said a number of people had been injured in the incident and were receiving medial help, though did not provide any further details.

Regional governor Sergei Melikov said that “all Dagestanis empathise with the suffering” of people in Gaza but called the riot “outrageous” and said it would “receive the appropriate assessment from law enforcement”.

A criminal case has now been opened for civil disorder.

Authorities said on Sunday evening that all "unauthorised citizens" had been removed from the airport but that it was expected to remain closed until 6 November.

Russian airport closed after protesters storm runway in search for Israeli flight - The Independent

Hundreds of protesters have stormed an airport in Russia reportedly in search of a flight arriving from Israel.

A large crowd poured out into the landing field and runway of Makhachkala airport on Sunday evening as videos on social media showed young men among the protesters carrying Palestinian flags.

Footage also showed some in the crowd trying to overturn a police car. Antisemitic slogans can be heard being shouted and some in the crowd examined the passports of arriving passengers, the Associated Press reported.

Crowds stormed through an airport in Russia’s Dagestan in protest of a plane arriving from Israel

Russian media showed one group attempting to approach an aircraft on the runway, but the passengers remained safely on board. The identification number on the tail of the plane indicated it had arrived from Israel, according to the FlightRadar24 flight tracking website.

Authorities in Dagestan, one of several areas in the north Caucasus region that is home to large Muslim communities, closed the airport and diverted flights because of the incident.

The Russian aviation authority Rosaviatsia said the protesters had been cleared by 10.20pm local time (7.20pm GMT), but the airport would remain closed pending “normalisation” of the situation.

Local health authorities later said around 20 people had been injured, two critically, during the incident, which Russia’s Investigative Committee ordered a criminal probe into.

According to The Guardian, posts on the social media platform Telegram had circulated saying that flights from Tel Aviv would be arriving on Sunday evening with refugees from Israel.

“The situation is very difficult in Dagestan, people from the community are afraid, they call, and I do not know what to advise,” Ovadya Isakov, a government representative of the local Jewish community, told the Podyom news outlet.

Israel urged Russian authorities to protect Israelis and Jews in their jurisdictions following the reports.

Russian officials said they had removed the group from the airport

A statement by the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem said the Israeli ambassador in Moscow was working with Russian authorities. “The State of Israel views gravely attempts to harm Israelis citizens and Jews anywhere,” it said.

Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said Israel “expects the Russian law enforcement authorities to protect the safety of all Israeli citizens and Jews wherever they may be and to act resolutely against the rioters and against the wild incitement directed against Jews and Israelis”.

While voicing support for a ceasefire in the Israeli bombardment of Gaza, the regional Dagestani government appealed to citizens to remain calm and not take part in such protests.

“We urge residents of the republic to treat the current situation in the world with understanding. Federal authorities and international organisations are making every effort to bring about a ceasefire against Gaza civilians — we urge residents of the republic not to succumb to the provocations of destructive groups and not to create panic in society,” the Dagestani government wrote on Telegram.

The supreme mufti of Dagestan, Sheikh Akhmad Afandi, called on residents to stop the unrest at the airport.

“You are mistaken. This issue cannot be resolved in this way. We understand and perceive your indignation very painfully. We will solve this issue differently. Not with rallies, but appropriately. Maximum patience and calm for you,” he said in a video published to Telegram.
