Ukraine war: Russia hits Kyiv with 'biggest drone attack of conflict so far' - Sky News

Kyiv has been hit by what Ukraine's air force described as the largest Russian drone attack of the war so far.

At least five people were injured after Iranian-made kamikaze Shahed drones descended on the capital overnight.

Explosions were heard as the aircraft were intercepted, with buildings damaged across multiple districts.

Writing on Telegram, mayor Vitali Klitschko said apartment blocks and a nursery were hit.

An 11-year-old girl was among the injured, he added.

'Wilful terror'

Away from Kyiv, the Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv and Kirovohrad regions were also targeted.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the strikes, which came ahead of Ukraine's annual memorial day for victims of the 1932 Holodomor famine, as an act of "wilful terror".

"The Russian leadership is proud of the fact that it can kill," he wrote on Telegram.

He said more than 70 drones were involved in the attack, most of which were shot down.

The Holodomor Famine

Ukraine recognises the Holodomor famine as a genocide against its people by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.

Historians dispute whether the famine, which killed millions of Ukrainians, was a purposefully orchestrated bid to eradicate an independence movement, or a botched nationalisation policy.

It saw Stalin order police to seize grain, livestock, and seed from Ukrainian farms.

Moscow denies the deaths were caused by a deliberate genocidal policy and says Russians and other ethnic groups also suffered.

Ukraine's Holodomor memorial day takes place on the fourth Saturday in each November.

Since Russia launched its invasion last year, President Vladimir Putin has been accused of a similar attempt to starve Ukraine's people.

Ukraine is hosting an international summit to promote its efforts to export grain despite an ongoing Russian blockade of the Black Sea, its main export route.

Russia's winter bombardment

It comes days after Russia launched consecutive nights of drone attacks on Kyiv for the first time in weeks.

Those also used Shahed drones.

How Ukraine shoots down Russia's drones

The attacks bear similarities to 12 months ago, when - six months after troops retreated from around Kyiv - Russia began targeting Ukraine's energy, military, and transport infrastructure.

Millions were left without energy and heating during the coldest months of the year.

The latest attack has left almost 200 buildings without power, Ukraine's energy ministry said.

Mr Zelenskyy had warned civilians to expect another winter bombardment from Moscow this year.

In a nightly address last weekend, he said: "The closer we are to winter, the more Russians will try to make the strikes more powerful."

Israel-Gaza hostages latest: More hostages to be released in second day of truce - The Independent

Red Cross convoy reaches Rafah crossing with released Hamas hostages

The latest round of Hamas hostage swaps for Palestinian prisoners has been announced for the second day of the temporary truce.

The Independent has learned that 14 hostages, inlcuding eight children, will be exchanged today for 42 Palestinians.

Israeli security officials said late on Friday they were reviewing a list of the potential next wave of hostages who could be released in the coming days.

Earlier on Friday, a total of 24 hostages were released from Gaza and transported through the Rafah crossing into Egypt after seven weeks in captivity.

The exchange is the beginning phase of an agreement expected to free upwards of 50 captives of Hamas.

The militant group released 13 Israeli women and children to the Red Cross Friday afternoon as Hamas and Israel maintained a temporary ceasefire, while 39 Palestinian women and teen boys have been released so far from Israeli detention in return.

Ten Thai nationals and one Filipino held hostage by Hamas were also released as part of a separate, Qatar-backed agreement. The Israeli military warned civilians in Gaza that the “war is not over” and will continue.

Israeli-owned ship ‘targeted in suspected Iranian drone attack in Indian Ocean’

A container ship owned by an Israeli billionaire has come under attack by a suspected Iranian drone in the Indian Ocean as Israel wages war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip, an American defence official said.

The attack on the CMA CGM Symi comes as global shipping increasingly finds itself targeted in the war that threatens to become a wider regional conflict - even as a truce has halted fighting and Hamas exchanges hostages for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

The US defence official said the Malta-flagged vessel was suspected to have been targeted by a triangle-shaped, bomb-carrying Shahed-136 drone while in international waters.

The drone exploded, causing damage to the ship but not injuring any of its crew.

“We continue to monitor the situation closely,” the official said.

The official declined to explain why the US military believe Iran was behind the attack.

What happens when the Gaza ceasefire ends?

A four-day ceasefire in Gaza set to begin on Friday will allow for the release of 50 hostages, the delivery of desperately needed humanitarian aid, and a brief respite from the relentless bombardment of the densely populated territory for more than two million civilians.

But what happens when it ends?

The short answer is that the war will continue, and it may be even bloodier than before. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu put it bluntly on Wednesday during a live address about the hostage deal. “The war continues,” he said. “We continue until we have achieved complete victory.”

Richard Hall and Bel Trew have the details.

Hamas hostages found in ‘good condition’ after return to Israel

Eight women and children returned to Israel last night after being held hostage by Hamas for 49 days were assessed as being in “good physical condition”.

Dr. Efrat Bron-Harlev, CEO of Schneider Children’s Medical Center, said the four children, three mothers and one grandmother are “undergoing medical and emotional assessment by the medical and psychosocial teams” but that their physical signs were strong.

“There are not enough words to express the emotion that we are feeling at this time together with the families and the entire nation of Israel,” Dr Bron-Harlev said.

“We will do our utmost to care for the physical and emotional health of the returned hostages. From our perspective, this is a national mission, and we are proud to have the privilege to treat them.

“Our hearts are with the other captives who are still in Gaza, and their families, and we hope that they will return to us, whole and healthy, in the very near future.”

Nearly 200 aid trucks arrive in Gaza

Nearly 200 aid trucks arrived in Gaza yesterday through the Egyptian Rafah crossing, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society has reported.

This amounts to a significant uptick in aid over a 24-hour period, though it is under the 200-300 truck per day agreement expected for the temporary truce.

It is also still considerably below the pre 7 October average of aid supplies, where it was usual to see 500 trucks a day entering Gaza.

Dublin riots news: Five-year-old stabbing victim critical as 32 charged over riots - The Independent

Emergency services at scene of ‘stabbing near school’ in Dublin city centre

A five-year-old girl who was among several people stabbed outside a school in Dublin remains in a critical condition, Garda (Irish police) have said.

Some 32 people have been charged in connection to riots that broke out in the capital following the knife attack, which happened near the Gaelscoil Cholaiste Mhuire primary school on Thursday afternoon.

Irish police said on Friday they were continuing to investigate the circumstances of the stabbings.

A second girl, aged 6, continues to receive medical treatment for less serious injuries in CHI Crumlin. A boy, aged 5, was discharged from CHI Crumlin yesterday evening.

A woman in her 30s remains in a serious condition in the Mater Hospital, and a man in his 50s also remains in a serious condition in a hospital in the Dublin region.

Another man in his 50s has been arrested as police were said to be pursuing a “definite line of inquiry”.

Earlier, Leo Varadkar, Ireland’s prime minister, condemned the more than 500 people who took part in the rioting. “Those involved brought shame on Dublin, brought shame on Ireland and brought shame on their families and themselves,” he said.

Israel-Gaza: Families' relief as hostages released - bbc.co.uk

Families of 13 Israeli hostages released by Hamas have spoken of their relief at their return.

The group, which includes young children and elderly women, are now back in Israel after being brought by the Red Cross from Gaza into Egypt.

Ten Thai nationals and one Filipino were also released by Hamas, in a deal separate to the one mediated by Qatar.

Under the terms of the Qatar deal, a total of 50 Israeli hostages and 150 Palestinian detainees are meant to be released over four days during a temporary pause in the fighting.

The hostages released by Hamas on Friday were taken to an Egyptian hospital for medical assessments before being taken back to Israel.

The Israelis include four children - aged two, four, six and nine - as well as an 85-year-old woman.

"We have now completed the return of the first of our hostages. Children, their mothers and other women. Each and every one of them is a entire world," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.

"But I emphasise to you - the families, and to you - the citizens of Israel: We are committed to the return of all our hostages."

Yoni Asher's wife, Doron Katz Asher, 34, and their two daughters Raz, four, and Aviv, two, have been released.

"I am determined to bring about the resurrection of my family from the trauma and the terrible bereavement we went through," Mr Asher told the BBC.

"I don't celebrate, I won't celebrate until the last of the kidnapped returns," he said.

"The families of the kidnapped are not posters, they are not slogans, they are real people, and the families of the kidnapped are from today my new family, and I will make sure and do everything that the last of the kidnapped comes home."

Margalit Moses, 78, was also among those released by Hamas. A cancer survivor, she was kidnapped from Kibbutz Nir Oz by Hamas on 7 October.

Daniele Aloni and her six-year-old daughter Emilia have also been released as part of the deal. They were kidnapped on 7 October during a visit to stay with family in Kibbutz Nir Oz.

During the attacks, the last message Daniele sent to her family said that "there were terrorists in their house" and she was afraid that they would not survive.

Itay Ravi, whose 78-year-old uncle Avraham remains in captivity, says "this is one step towards being happy" after three of his family members were released.

His aunt, Ruthi Munder, 78, his cousin Keren Munder, 54, and her son, Ohad Munder-Zichri, nine, were kidnapped from Nir Oz.

"They're making their way now to Israeli hospitals, to family, and this is very exciting. However, we cannot be completely happy," he told BBC Newsnight.

"It's still a very, very horrific reality that we're in," Mr Ravi added.

Ohad turned nine while being held in Gaza.

"The only celebration that we're going to have soon is [for] Ohad's ninth birthday," Mr Ravi said.

"Now we're going to have a big celebration for him, with all the friends and family, after he gets into the new reality. We'll see how he's back…I don't know how a nine-year-old comes back after 50 days in the hands of a terrorist organisation. I hope he does well."

There was also huge relief among families of the Thai nationals and Filipino released by Hamas.

Kittiya Thuengsaeng, the girlfriend of 28-year-old Thai hostage Wichai Kalapat, described the emotional rollercoaster she went through since he disappeared.

She was told by local Thai officials that her boyfriend of three years had died in the 7 October attacks. But when Thai authorities announced all of the names of the deceased, Wichai's name was not on there.

Five days ago, she was told he was on the list of Thai hostages.

Gelienor (Jimmy) Pacheco, 33, from the Philippines, was taken from Kibbutz Nir Oz on October 7. Jimmy was a carer for fellow kibbutz resident Amitai Ben Zvi who was killed in the Hamas raid.

The releases of both Wichai and Jimmy were confirmed on Saturday morning.

A released Palestinian detainee speaks to media as he leaves the Israeli military prison, Ofer
Reuters

A total of 39 Palestinian detainees have been released from Israeli prisons as part of the exchange.

They are accused of a range of offences, from throwing stones to attempted murder. Some had been convicted of crimes while others were awaiting trial.

The group of 24 women and 15 teenage boys was released across the Beituniya checkpoint in the occupied West Bank and greeted by large crowds chanting.

One Palestinian detainee released was Marah Bakeer. She was arrested in 2015, when she was 16 years old, and sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in jail for a knife attack on a border police officer.

Bakeer told waiting journalists: "This deal comes following the death of many people and this makes us unhappy and uncomfortable."

She said she was kept in solitary confinement and had "no idea what was happening outside, no idea about the situation in Gaza".

"The news of the deal was a surprise," she said.

The detainees were chosen from a list of 300 women and minors compiled by Israel.

Less than a quarter of those on the list have been convicted - the vast majority are being held on remand while awaiting trial. Most of those listed are teenage boys - 40% of them under the age of 18. There is also one teenage girl and 32 women.

Hamas took more than 200 hostages during a cross-border attack on southern Israel on 7 October in which 1,200 people were killed.

Human rights organisations say the number of Palestinians held without charge in Israeli jails has shot up since the 7 October attacks.

At least 60 aid lorries have entered Gaza since the pause in fighting - Israel says eight of the lorries are bringing in fuel, part of 130,000 litres to be delivered each day of the truce.

Although the four-day ceasefire agreement suggests all areas should be accessible to aid agencies, Israel has told Palestinians now displaced in the south not to try to return home, saying the north is a war zone - although many thousands of civilians are believed to remain there.

Dublin stabbings: Workers told to stay away as riots break out across city - The Independent

Emergency services at scene of ‘stabbing near school’ in Dublin city centre

People in Dublin have been urged to work from home today after violent riots broke out across Ireland’s capital over a knife attack that left at least five people injured.

Police said “significant levels” of public disorder and criminal damage were carried out with trams, buses, cars and other public properties set on fire during the clashes.

Labelling them “disgraceful scenes”, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said a “complete lunatic faction driven by far-right ideology” is behind disorder in the capital.

This comes after an attack unfolded shortly after 1.30pm in Parnell Square East, near the Irish-medium primary school Gaelscoil Cholaiste Mhuire, which left five people injured.

The casualties include three young children, an adult female and an adult male. Two girls are receiving treatment for serious injuries, while a five-year-old boy has been discharged. Both adults remain in hospital after suffering serious wounds.

Police believe the attack was a “standalone” incident and is not terror-related. The scene remains cordoned off, while a man in his 50s has been arrested and named as a “person of interest” in the investigation.

Clean-up operation underway

The clean-up operation has begun in Dublin after a night of “huge destruction” carried out by what police have described as a “far-right riotous mob”.

Disorder broke out after a man stabbed multiple people outside a school in the city centre on Thursday afternoon.

This morning, workers were seen clearing up debris from broken windows of the Holiday Inn Express on Cathal Brugha Street.

Staff in high-vis vests were also pictured cleaning up at the site of a burnt out tram after the rioters attacked public transport.

Staff and pupils offered psychological help after knife rampage

Staff and pupils at the school near where yesterday’s stabbing spree took place are being offered psychological help, Ireland’s education minister has said.

The knife attack happened outside the Gaelscoil Choláiste Mhuire children’s school in the city centre.

“We are shocked beyond measure, that such an incident could unfold in Parnell Square and our NEPS teams, the National Education and Psychological Service teams, are on the ground in the school,” Norma Foley said.

"They were there throughout yesterday. They will be available to the school again today and they will consistently work with the school staff to support the school community.

"Every school has a critical incident plan. We would hope that they never have to invoke it, but it was invoked yesterday and the NEPS team go in to support the team within the school to support each other and to support the children.

"I think best practice tells us that at a time like this, children need to be with people that they know best and that are calm a secure environment is provided to the children and that’s exactly what will be happening in the school."

Dublin knifeman 'stopped by Deliveroo driver' as children stabbed in street

A Deliveroo driver claims he intervened to stop a man accused of stabbing multiple people in Dublin.

A five-year-old girl was in emergency care following the knife attack on Parnell Square at around 1.30pm on Thursday.

A woman in her 30s and two other children aged five and six were also injured in an attack that has sparked riots in the Irish capital.

Caio Benicio says he took off his helmet and used it to attack the assailant.

“I didn’t even make a decision, it was pure instinct, and it was all over in seconds,” he told The Journal.

“ He fell to the ground, I didn’t see where knife went, and other people stepped in,” he told The Journal tonight.

“I have two kids myself, so I had to do something. I did what anyone would do. People were there but they couldn’t step in because he was armed, but I knew I could use my helmet as a weapon.”

Ireland’s police chief has defended his force as saying that “nobody could have anticipated” the riots sparked by Thursday’s fatal stabbings.

Asked at a press conference this morning whether police failed the people of Ireland while rioters caused havoc in Dublin, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris told reporters: “An Garda Síochána responded to this in an extraordinary fashion.

“Members from across the country responded, returned to duty. Public order units from all over Ireland responded here to Dublin. More and more resources were arriving throughout the evening.

“But we could not have anticipated that in response to a terrible crime – the stabbing of schoolchildren and their teacher – that this would be the response.

“In effect, those filled with hate, and hate directed to members of An Garda Síochána, that they would attempt to storm through our cordon and disrupt the crime scene, and then engage in violence, looting and disorder, including some very significant criminal damage – nobody could have anticipated that when these events started at 1:30pm, these awful events.”

Police have not ruled out terror as motive for stabbings, Garda chief says

Initially, police said they were “satisfied there is no terrorist link” to the stabbings but at an evening press conference, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris stopped short of definitively ruling out a terrorist motive.

“I have never ruled out any possible motive for this attack ... all lines of inquiry are open to determine the motive for this attack,” he said.

‘Manipulative thugs’ must not be allowed to use tragedy to wreak havoc, says minister

Police and politicians have called for calm in Dublin and warned against misinformation over the attack earlier on Thursday.

“The scenes we are witnessing this evening in our city center cannot and will not be tolerated,” said Ireland’s justice minister Helen McEntee.

“A thuggish and manipulative element must not be allowed to use an appalling tragedy to wreak havoc.”

Witness recounts knife attack on children and two adults

Siobhan Kearney said she witnessed what she believes was a man attacking children during an incident in Dublin.

She described what she saw as “absolutely bedlam”.

Ms Kearney told RTE she watched people disarm a man who she said had a knife.

“I looked across the road and I see the man and the stabbing motion with a load of children so I flew across the road.

The man was after stabbing two children as far as I could make out, and we got the children up to the left with the women that were there, and the teachers I presume,” she told the broadcaster.

“People were trying to attack the man so me and an American lady, we formed a ring around the man, and then about three minutes later the ambulance came for the children and then another ambulance and fire officers came for the man on the ground.”
