Ukraine war: Dozens of Russian troops 'die in air strike' - BBC

HIMARS missile being launched in Ukraine - May 2023Getty Images

At least 60 Russian troops have been killed after a training area in occupied eastern Ukraine was hit by two missiles, reports say.

Sources familiar with the situation told the BBC that troops had gathered at the site in Donetsk region for the arrival of a senior commander.

Video footage of the incident appeared to show large numbers of dead.

A Russian official confirmed that a strike took place but described the reports as "grossly exaggerated".

The attack reportedly came hours before Russian President Vladimir Putin met his Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu.

At the meeting, Mr Shoigu claimed Russian successes in several areas of the front line and spoke of the recent capture of the town of Avdiivka, but made no mention of the Donetsk region incident.

Reports say members of the 36th motorised rifle brigade, normally based in the Transbaikal region of Siberia, were waiting for the arrival of Maj-Gen Oleg Moiseyev, commander of the 29th Army of the Eastern military region, at a training area near the village of Trudovske.

A soldier who survived the incident said during a video recording of the aftermath that the brigade's commanders had made them stand in an open field.

They were reportedly hit by two missiles fired from the US-made HIMARS launch system.

This and other videos and stills show dozens of soldiers apparently lying dead in a field. Estimates, including by those who survived, suggest at least 60 have died.

The BBC is working to verify the footage.

Transbaikal governor Alexander Osipov indirectly confirmed the strike in his Telegram channel, but said that the reports about it were "inaccurate and grossly exaggerated".

Without giving casualty figures, he said full and accurate information would be provided to the families of all the soldiers involved.

"No-one will be left without help or support," he added.

There has been no word about the strike as yet from the Ukrainian authorities.

In a separate development, several pro-Russian sources have reported that the military blogger Andrey Morozov, known as Murz, has killed himself.

Morozov, whose Telegram channel has some 100,000 subscribers, wrote in a series of apparently final posts that he had been forced by the military to take down a report about Russian losses in recent battles, including Avdiivka.

He had said about 16,000 troops had been killed or seriously injured in the campaign and 300 pieces of armour destroyed.

The blogger wrote that he had been shut down by propagandists from state TV, but that they were too cowardly to come and kill him.

"Well I'll do it myself then," he adds. "I'll shoot myself if no-one dares to take on this trifling matter."

The BBC is unable to verify reports of the blogger's death or how he might have died.

Russia's military rarely reports casualties, but some pro-Russian military bloggers have regularly done so. Ukraine has also spoken of thousands of Russian troops killed in recent battles.

And BBC Russian, in a joint project with the Mediazona website, recently updated its figures for confirmed deaths in the Russian military based on open sources in the two years since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine.

Altogether, 45,123 are confirmed dead, including 6,614 since October last year. Since that date, there has been a sharp increase in average weekly deaths compared with previous months.

Crew evacuated from UK ship 'taking in water' 36 hours after Houthi attack in Red Sea - Evening Standard

US Central Command said: “Between 9:30 and 10:45 p.m, two anti-ship ballistic missiles were launched from Iranian-backed Houthi terrorist-controlled areas of Yemen toward MV Rubymar, a Belize-flagged, UK-owned bulk carrier. One of the missiles struck the vessel, causing damage. The ship issued a distress call and a coalition warship along with another merchant vessel responded to the call to assist the crew of the MV Rubymar. The crew was transported to a nearby port by the merchant vessel.” The Rubymar sustained damaged although the crew were able to evacuate, the vessel's maritime security company LSS-SAPU told Reuters on Monday.

Israel-Gaza war: US calls for temporary ceasefire in UN text - BBC

People sit outside tents in the city of RafahGetty Images

The US has proposed a draft resolution at the UN Security Council which calls for a temporary ceasefire in Gaza.

It has also warned Israel against invading the overcrowded city of Rafah.

The US has previously avoided the word "ceasefire" during UN votes on the war, but President Joe Biden has made similar comments.

However, the US plans to veto another draft resolution - from Algeria - which calls for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.

More than a million displaced Palestinians, who represent about half of Gaza's population, are crammed into Rafah after being forced to seek shelter there.

The southern city, which borders Egypt, was home to only 250,000 people before the war.

Many of the displaced are living in makeshift shelters or tents in squalid conditions, with scarce access to safe drinking water or food.

The UN has issued its own warning that a planned Israeli offensive in the city could lead to a "slaughter".

Israel launched its operations in Gaza following an attack by Hamas gunmen on southern Israel on 7 October, during which about 1,200 people were killed and more than 240 others taken hostage.

The Israeli military campaign has killed 29,000 people in the Palestinian territory, according to the Hamas-run health ministry there.

Washington has come under immense international pressure to use its leverage to rein in Israel's devastating operations, having spent much of the war emphasising its ally's right to self-defence.

While it has vowed to block the Algerian draft, its rival text does register opposition to Israel's plans.

Talks will begin on the US draft this week, but it is not clear when or if the proposal might be put to a vote. Any resolutions that are passed at the UN are not legally binding.

It is the first time the US has called for a temporary ceasefire in Gaza at the UN, having vetoed previous resolutions using the word.

The US draft also states that a major ground offensive in Rafah would result in more harm to civilians and their further displacement, including potentially into neighbouring countries - a reference to Egypt.

It also says such a move would have serious implications for regional peace and security.

The draft resolution calls for a temporary ceasefire in Gaza as soon as practicable, echoing remarks by President Joe Biden in his conversations with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week.

Mr Netanyahu has so far resisted international pressure to reconsider the plan - vowing to rescue remaining hostages and defeat Hamas throughout Gaza.

Israeli war cabinet member Benny Gantz has warned the manoeuvre will be launched unless Hamas frees all its hostages by 10 March. The date marks the start of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.

The Arab group of nations says the Security Council cannot turn a deaf ear to the pleas of the international community demanding a ceasefire.

Vladimir Putin promotes prison official accused of torturing Alexei Navalny – live - The Independent

Navalny’s widow claims he was poisoned with novichok nerve agent

Vladimir Putin has promoted a prison official accused of torturing Alexei Navalny during his final stint in jail, it has been revealed.

First deputy head of the Federal Penitentiary Service Valery Boyarinev was awarded the military rank of Colonel General of the Internal Service on Monday, just three days after Mr Navalny died in an Arctic Circle penal colony.

In June 2023, it was revealed at a court hearing that Boyarinev had ordered the IK-6 penal colony where Mr Navalny was being held to limit the amount with which the opposition figure could buy food in custody.

Ivan Zhdanov, the director of Mr Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation, posted an image detailing the order this morning. On X, he wrote: “Personal reward for torture and murder from Putin.”

It comes as Alexei Navalny’s mother has been told she must wait 14 days to receive her son’s body as authorities conduct a “chemical examination”, his spokesperson and allies have said.

The move will raise suspicions that the leading Vladimir Putin critic was poisoned, with his wife Yulia Navalnaya alleging as much on Monday.

Putin did not watch Yulia Navalnaya's video statement, Kremlin says

Russian President Vladimir Putin did not watch Yulia Navalnaya’s video statement, but her assertion that her late husband Alexei Navalny was poisoned with a Novichok nerve agent is unfounded, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.

Asked about Navalnaya’s claim that Putin had killed her husband, Peskov said that he would not comment given that Navalnaya had recently been widowed.

But Peskov said that in general accusations that Putin was responsible for Alexei Navalny‘s death were absolutely unfounded and obnoxious.

Wife of jailed Russian opposition figure praises ‘superhuman’ Yulia Navalnaya

The wife of jailed Russian opposition figure Vladimir Kara-Murza has praised the “superhuman effort” of Alexei Navalny’s spouse, Yulia Navalnaya, following the death of her husband.

Evgenia Kara-Murza, whose husband is currently serving a 25-year sentence in a Siberian penal colony in conditions near identical to what Alexei Navalny had been subjected to, applauded Yulia for “her fortitude and resilience”.

“Walking through hell with your head held high and a firm belief in your strength requires almost superhuman effort,” she wrote on X, sharing a speech by Ms Navalnaya.

“Like millions of people, I mourn with Yulia Navalnyana and admire her fortitude and resilience. And I share her rage.

Appeal of Alexei Navalny’s wife could prolong his legacy, says friend of family

The appeal of Alexei Navalny’s wife to continue the fight of her dead husband has rejuvenated a Russian dissident community still mourning the loss of its figurehead, a friend of the Navalny family has told The Independent.

On Monday, in a nine-minute video message laced with rage, Yulia Navalnaya, 47, said she would continue the fight of her husband for a “free Russia” and called on supporters to oppose President Vladimir Putin with greater fury than ever.

Grigori Chkhartishvili, the Russian-Georgian novelist who earlier this month was charged by a Moscow court in absentia for “justifying terrorism, said Yulia’s message was encouraging.

“Many were in despair after Alexei’s death, the prevailing mood was ‘there is no hope now’,” he said. “Yulia’s appeal changed the tide completely. Now everyone is full of hope and energy again.

“If she really goes into politics it might make a big difference. It would mean that killing Alexei  would prove to be Putin’s mistake.”

He added: “Yulia has two potential capabilities. She is the only figure who can unite the divided opposition factions. And what’s even more important she appeals– on personal level – to many Russians who are now politically indifferent. Because she is attractive, emotional, because she is a woman, and because her story is powerful.

“We’ll see soon whether her declaration was made on the spur of the moment or whether it was in earnest. I hope it is the latter.”

Jailed Russian opposition figure says he found out about Navalny’s death yesterday

A jailed Russian opposition politician has expressed his anger over the death of Alexei Navalny, having found out only yesterday.

Ilya Yashin was jailed for eight-and-a-half years in December 2022 for spreading false information meant to discredit the Russian army, under a law introduced after Russia launched its invasion.

His arrest came after statements he made on his YouTube channel about war crimes allegedly committed by Russian forces in the Kyiv suburb of Bucha.

Mr Yashin wrote on X: “News comes slowly to the camp barracks, and I only learned about the death of Alexei Navalny yesterday. It’s hard to convey my shock. It’s hard to gather your thoughts. The pain and horror are unbearable.

“Alexey Navalny was my friend. So does Boris Nemtsov. We did a common cause and dedicated our lives to making Russia peaceful, free and happy. Now both my friends are dead. I feel a black emptiness inside. And, of course, I understand my own risks. I’m behind bars, my life is in Putin’s hands, and it’s in danger. But I will continue to stick to my line.

“Standing over Boris’s body in February 2015, I vowed to myself not to be afraid, not to give up and not to run. Nine years later, mourning Alexei, I can only repeat this oath.”

Putin awards military rank to Navalny torturer days after death

Vladimir Putin has awarded a prison minister responsible for depriving Alexei Navalny of food during his latest incarceration with the military rank of Colonel General.

First deputy head of the Federal Penitentiary Service Valery Boyarinev was awarded the rank on Monday, just three days after Mr Navalny was killed.

Ivan Zhdanov, director of Mr Navalny’s Anti-Corruption foundation, reposted an image of the order issued by Boyarinev in March 2023 to IK-6 of the Vladimir region to limit the amount with which the Russian opposition figure could buy food in custody.

Vladimir Osechkin, who founded the “No to Gulag” project, has claimed that Boyarinev oversaw the torture of Ukrainian prisoners and Navalny in the Russian prison system.

‘There will be consequences,’ says Cameron

Foreign secretary Lord Cameron said he expected the UK and G7 allies to impose fresh sanctions on Russians involved in Alexei Navalny’s death.

Speaking to reporters during his visit to the Falkland Islands, Lord Cameron said: “I think the first thing is just to remember what a great man Alexei Navalny was, and what an appalling regime Putin runs in Russia.

“And yes, there will be consequences. What we do in these situations is we look at how someone’s human rights have been damaged and the individual people that caused that, and we’re able to go after those people with particular measures.

“Now we never pre-announce sanctions in advance, I can’t do that.

“But what I can tell you is at the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in Munich, I pressed that the United Kingdom will be doing that and I urged other countries to do the same. And I believe very much that both those things will happen.”

Foreign Affairs minister stresses Navalny’s death was a ‘murder’

Alicia Kearns urged MPs to label Alexei Navalny’s death as a murder, while in Commons on Monday, 19 February. “Alexei Navalny was murdered and it is important that we in this House call it out for what it was, because that is what he deserves.” the Foreign Affairs Committee chairwoman said. “Following his murder, I was also in Munich, where I heard his wife Yulia (Navalnaya) ask us to stand by her. That is what we must now do.” Leo Docherty, the UK Minister for Europe, agreed with the description, saying: “She is right to use the word murder. We do seek to hold the state and the Russian leadership to account.”

Notorious cyber crime gang Lockbit disrupted by NCA, FBI and international coalition - Sky News

An infamous cyber crime gang that holds victims' data to ransom has been disrupted by the National Crime Agency (NCA) and a coalition of international police agencies.

A post on Lockbit's extortion website on Monday said: "This site is now under the control of the National Crime Agency of the UK, working in close cooperation with the FBI and the international law enforcement task force, 'Operation Cronos'."

Europol and other international police organisations from France, Japan, Switzerland, Canada, Australia, Sweden, the Netherlands, Finland and Germany all aided in the rare law enforcement operation.

An NCA spokesperson confirmed that the agency had disrupted the gang and said the operation was "ongoing and developing".

A representative for Lockbit posted messages on an encrypted messaging app saying it had backup servers not affected by the law enforcement action.

Lockbit is one of the most prolific and dominant ransomware operators in what is a highly competitive underground market.

The group and its affiliates have hacked some of the world's largest organisations in recent months. The gang makes money by stealing sensitive data and threatening to leak it if victims fail to pay an extortionate ransom.

Its affiliates are like-minded criminal groups that are recruited to wage attacks using Lockbit's digital extortion tools.

Lockbit was discovered in 2020 when its malicious software was found on Russian-language cyber crime forums, leading some security analysts to believe the gang is based in Russia.

It has not professed support for any government, however, and no government has formally attributed it to a nation-state.

From December: Russian cyber attacks: What we know

On its now-defunct dark website, the group said it was "located in the Netherlands, completely apolitical and only interested in money".

US officials have described Lockbit as the world's top ransomware threat. The group has hit more than 1,700 organisations in the US in nearly every industry from financial services and food to schools, transportation and government departments.

Royal Mail faced severe disruption after an attack by Lockbit in early 2023.

Before it was taken down, Lockbit's website displayed an ever-growing gallery of victim organisations that was updated almost daily.

Next to their names were digital clocks that showed the number of days left to the deadline given to each organisation to provide ransom payment.

On Monday, the site displayed a similar countdown, but from the law enforcement agencies who wrote: "Return here for more information at 11:30 GMT on Tuesday 20th Feb."
