Is this Kim Jong Un's secret lover? North Korean pop star rumoured to have given birth to his love-child is sp - Daily Mail

  • Hyon Song-wol has been rumoured to have had a secret love child with Kim
  • The former singer now works in the dictator's personal secretariat

A North Korean pop star has been spotted out with Kim Jong-un amid rumours that she's his secret flame and gave birth to his love child.

Having left her role in North Korea's premier girl group, the Moranbong Band, Hyon Song-wol now works in the dictator's personal secretariat.

Last week she was spotted with Kim in Pyongyang, where she was seen glued to her phone while the other aides frantically took notes.

Now a retired spymaster says that their relationship is more than professional, and that she and the despot have a love child.

Choe Su-yong, formerly of the National Intelligence Service (NIS) in neighbouring South Korea, said the child was named Kim Il-bong.

Choe recently told the Korea Times that Kim Jong-un also has a legitimate son with his wife, Ri Sol-ju, but the boy is too 'pale and thin' for public life.

Speaking to the Chosun Ilbo newspaper, he described the contrast between the half brothers.

He said: 'The illegitimate son, Kim Il-bong, is sturdy, but the first son born to Kim's wife is skinny to the extent of being described in North Korean terms as pitiful.'

According to the ex-spy, Kim Jong-un met Hyon Song-wol when he was still at school in Switzerland.

Choe said that Hyon served the future tyrant and his sister, Kim Yo-jong, as a nanny-cum-caretaker, but a relationship formed and continued on their return to North Korea.

Kim's father and predecessor, Kim Jong-il, disapproved of the match and ordered him to break it off, according to a South Korean report from 2012.

But after his father's death, 'the son is thought to have rekindled the relationship' the report said.

Michael Madden, founder of North Korea Leadership Watch, said there was good reason to believe that the duo first bonded in Switzerland.

He said: 'One thing we can say, I think, with a fairly good degree of confidence in its accuracy, is that they had a close relationship when he was studying in Switzerland.

'What ended up happening was that members of these elite performing arts troupes went and sort of lived in the house with them, and looked after and took care of them.

'There's a very good chance that Hyon Song-wol might have resided with Kim Jong-un and Kim Yo-jong when they lived in Switzerland, or she might have gone to visit them.'

'We can say pretty reliably that they have a very close relationship,' he added.

Choe Su-yong, formerly of the National Intelligence Service (NIS) in neighbouring South Korea, has said Kim shares an illegitimate child with  singer Hyon Song-wol

Mr Madden – a fellow of the Stimson Center in Washington DC – said the genesis of the love child rumours went back to 2012, when Hyon performed on stage pregnant.

And while he's sceptical of the rumours, he believes a historic tryst between the two could have happened.

He said: 'If Hyon Song-wol has a love child and is a mistress, that would bring scandal to Kim Jong-un, right?

'So why would he be bringing her out in any kind of public capacity?'

He continued: 'The one thing I have heard that might have a degree of credibility, because it's more nuanced, is there's a rumour that Hyon Song-wol might have taken Kim Jong-un's virginity.'

However, he added: 'Who the f*** knows?'

Mr Madden estimated that Hyon was about seven years older than Kim.

She would have had a high security clearance, he said, because her music career would have obliged her to perform at 'elite secret functions'.

He said: 'She's an elite pop star in North Korea. I've likened to her to Lana Del Rey.'

Today she is a deputy director in the state's Propaganda and Agitation Department, though her real job is working directly under the dictator.

Mr Madden said: 'She works for Kim Jong-un's personal secretariat.

'The personal secretariat is equivalent to the Prime Minister's staff that works in Number 10 Downing Street that's not part of the civil service.

'She coordinates his schedule, protocol, security arrangements, things like that.

'She also seems to play a very, very large role in North Korean television events and media packaging.'

As for Kim's wife - Ri Sol-ju - very little is known about her, including her exact age, who her parents are and what her life was like before marrying Kim.

This picture taken on November 18, 2022 and released from North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) shows North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un (left) with his wife Ri Sol Ju (second right) and daughter Ju Ae (second left) as they attend the test-firing of the new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) 'Hwasong Gun 17' type in North Korea

Even her name remains a mystery, as observers believe Ri is actually a pseudonym designed to keep her life before marriage a secret.

She was first pictured on Kim's arm in 2012 at a concert and North Korea subsequently confirmed she was Kim's wife, but said nothing else about her.

She then appeared with him multiple times between 2012 and 2014 before largely disappearing from public view until recent, when her presence has became much more pronounced.

Sources speaking in the South Korean media when she was first identified said she is a former cheerleader and singer, and gave her date of birth as some time between 1985 and 1989.

She was said to have been pictured in 2005 visiting South Korea during the Asian Athletics Championships as part of the North Korean cheerleading squad.

Others said she was a singer with the Unhasu orchestra who may have performed for Kim and his father, Kim Jong-il, during a New Year concert in 2010.

'There is a possibility Jong-un chose her as his wife after seeing her at the concert hall,' the Chosun Ilbo newspaper said at the time.

There was a North Korean singer by the name of Ri Sol-ju, the BBC reported, but it has never been confirmed if she and Kim's wife are the same person.

Elsewhere, the BBC reported that Ri was hastily married to Kim in 2009 as part of a succession plan drawn up by Kim Jong-il after he suffered a stroke.

It is believed she gave birth to their first child the following year with subsequent births taking place in 2013 and possibly in 2016, after she disappeared from public.

According to US basketball star Dennis Rodman, who is an unlikely friend of Kim, their middle child is called Ju-ae, after he let the information slip in an interview.

Nothing is known about the other children.

Before marrying Kim, Ri was reportedly sent to Kim Il-sung University, the country's most prestigious, to study a six-month course in being the first lady.

It has also been reported that she obtained a science degree from the same university years earlier.

According to a past AFP report, Ri was born in the northeastern province of North Hamkyong to an academic father and a doctor mother.

That would make her part of the political elite, since such positions are reserved only for those who are most loyal to the regime.

She is also said to be related to Ri Pyong-chol, a former air force general and close advisor of Kim Jong-un.

Ri is also known for her love of fine fashion, which is unusual in North Korea.

This picture taken on February 8, 2023 and released from North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) shows North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un (right), his daughter Ju Ae (centre) and wife Ri Sol Ju (left) attending a military parade celebrating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Korean People's Army

When she was first described by the country's press she was said to be wearing 'a trim black suit in the Chanel tradition' and once gifted a Dior bag to Kenji Fujimoto, Kim Jong-il's sushi chef.

Fujimoto claimed to have met her and described her as 'just so charming... I cannot describe her voice, it's so soft...'.

South Korean diplomats who travelled to the North for talks with Kim Jong-un recently said Ri joined him at the negotiating table.

They said the pair were an affectionate couple and 'seemed equal'.

US restricts travel for diplomats in Israel amid fears of Iran attack - BBC

The Tel Aviv branch of the United States EmbassyGetty Images

The United States has restricted travel for its embassy personnel in Israel amid fears of an attack by Iran.

The US embassy said staff had been told not to travel outside the greater Jerusalem, Tel Aviv or Beersheba areas "out of an abundance of caution".

Iran has vowed to retaliate, blaming Israel for a strike on its consulate in Syria 11 days ago, killing 13 people.

UK Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron has phoned his Iranian counterpart to urge against further escalation.

Israel has not claimed responsibility for the consulate attack but is widely considered to have been behind it.

Iran backs Hamas, the armed Palestinian group fighting Israel in Gaza, as well as various proxy groups throughout the region, including some - such as Hezbollah in Lebanon - that frequently carry out strikes against the Israelis.

Those killed in the consulate attack included a senior commander of Iran's elite Quds Force in Syria and Lebanon, as well as other military figures.

The attack came at a time of continuing diplomatic efforts to prevent the war in Gaza spreading across the region.

Speaking on Wednesday, US President Joe Biden warned Iran was threatening to launch a "significant attack" and vowed to offer "ironclad" support to Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his government was ready to meet any security challenge, warning that Israel would harm any country that caused it harm.

"We are prepared to meet all of the security needs of the State of Israel, both defensively and offensively," he said.

The commander responsible for US operations in the Middle East, Erik Kurilla, has travelled to Israel for talks with officials on security threats.

The Pentagon said the visit had been scheduled previously but had been brought forward "due to recent developments".

Following a call with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Lord Cameron said he had "made clear... that Iran must not draw the Middle East into a wider conflict".

"I am deeply concerned about the potential for miscalculation leading to further violence," he said.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has spoken to the foreign ministers of China, Saudi Arabia and Turkey to argue that further escalation is not in anyone's interest.

Following the call, China urged the US to play "a constructive role" in the Middle East, while also condemning the strike widely believed to have been carried out by Israel on Iran's consulate building in Damascus.

It is not clear what form any reprisal attack would take nor whether it would come directly from Iran or via one of its proxies.

On Sunday an Iranian official warned Israel's embassies were "no longer safe", suggesting a consulate building could be a possible target.

Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant has told his US counterpart that "any direct Iranian attack" on Israeli territory would "require an appropriate Israeli response against Iran".

Asked about the travel restrictions on Thursday, state department spokesperson Matthew Miller said he would not disclose the "specific assessments" behind them, but added: "Clearly we are monitoring the threat environment in the Middle East and specifically in Israel."

The UK Foreign Office has also updated its travel advice for Israel to state that the country's government has raised the "possibility of an attack on Israeli territory from Iran, and that such an attack could trigger wider escalation".

Since the Hamas-led attack on Israel on 7 October, the Foreign Office has warned against travel to large parts of Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

France similarly warned its citizens to "imperatively refrain from travel in the coming days to Iran, Lebanon, Israel and the Palestinian territories".

Family members of French diplomats in Iran are being evacuated.

German airline Lufthansa has extended a suspension of flights to the Iranian capital Tehran until Saturday.

The October attack saw gunmen kill 1,200 people and take more than 250 hostage after crossing into Israel from Gaza.

Israel says that of 130 hostages still in Gaza, at least 34 are dead.

More than 33,000 Gazans, the majority of them civilians, have been killed during Israel's subsequent offensive in Gaza, the Hamas-run health ministry says.

Kari Lake denounces Arizona abortion ban that she once supported - The Guardian

Kari Lake, the far-right US Senate candidate and Donald Trump ally, denounced Arizona’s abortion ban on Thursday, arguing that the strict legislation she previously praised does not have the support of the state’s residents.

“This total ban on abortion the Arizona supreme court just ruled on is out of line with where the people of this state are,” she said in a video on Thursday. “I agree with President Trump – this is such a personal and private issue.”

In a sudden and apparently strategic reversal, Lake and other Republicans in the state have come out against a ruling from the court on Tuesday declaring that a civil war-era law banning abortion in the state is now enforceable. The law, which predates Arizona’s statehood, does not provide exceptions for rape or incest and abortions are permitted only if the mother’s life is at risk.

Donald Trump has said the court went too far: “That’ll be straightened out, and as you know, it’s all about states’ rights.”

Republicans in the statehouse blocked an effort by Democrats on Wednesday to repeal the ban, highlighting the disunity within the party over how to handle an issue that will likely define the 2024 race.

Lake, an unsuccessful candidate for governor in the state and election denier, expressed her support for the law in 2022 after the supreme court voted to overturn Roe v Wade.

“I’m incredibly thrilled that we are going to have a great law that’s already on the books,” she said in a June 2022 radio interview. “I believe it’s ARS 13-3603, so it will prohibit abortion in Arizona except to save the life of a mother. And I think we’re going to be paving the way and setting course for other states to follow.”

An adviser to Lake on Tuesday argued she was referring to a different law, despite the fact that she cited the number of the 1864 code.

While Republicans celebrated the decision to overturn Roe, the issue has become a political nightmare for the party. Political strategists have said that the near-total ban would draw moderate voters to Democrats and mobilize young voters and voters of color.

“This was an earthquake of epic proportions in Arizona politics,” Barrett Marson, a Phoenix-based Republican strategist, said this week. “Anytime Republicans are talking about abortion, they’re losing. Now, I think the only issue is going to be abortion.”

Doug Ducey, the Republican former governor who expanded the state supreme court and appointed the four conservative justices who ruled the ban is enforceable, has said the court went too far. He said the ruling is “not the outcome I would have preferred”.

Support for abortion in the US remains strong. A survey last year found that 69% of Americans, a record high, believed abortion should generally be legal in the first three months of pregnancy.

Lake has sought to distance herself from her past comments on Arizona’s law and urged lawmakers to “come up with an immediate commonsense solution that Arizonans can support”. Meanwhile, Politico reported Thursday that Lake was personally lobbying lawmakers to repeal the law.

In a five-minute video released on Thursday in which she lavished praise on Trump and expressed her agreement with his position no less than three times, Lake said that while she personally opposed abortion, she supported exceptions for rape and incest. “A full ban on abortion is not where the people are,” she said.

She reiterated her support for the decision to overturn Roe, and insisted that if elected to the Senate she would oppose federal funding for abortion as well as a federal ban on abortion.

“I’m not going to Washington DC to impose federal restrictions on something that’s already been sent back to the states,” she said. “I’m going to Washington DC to secure our borders, strengthen our families and help President Trump make America great again.”

Biden vows 'ironclad' support for Israel amid Iran attack fears - BBC

President Joe BidenGetty Images

President Joe Biden has promised Israel "ironclad" US support amid fears that Tehran could launch reprisals for an attack that killed senior Iranians.

Mr Biden warned that Iran is threatening to launch a "significant attack" after Israel struck the Iranian consulate in Syria 10 days ago.

"We're going to do all we can to protect Israel's security," he added.

Earlier on Wednesday, Iran's leader said the Israeli attack in Damascus was equivalent to an attack on Iran itself.

"When they attacked our consulate area, it was like they attacked our territory," Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a televised speech.

"The evil regime must be punished, and it will be punished."

It is not yet clear what form any reprisal attack would take.

For Iran to strike Israel directly would risk an even greater escalation in the conflict, and analysts have said Iran does not have the military capability for a significant confrontation.

A possible alternative is an attack via an Iranian proxy like Hezbollah, which frequently carries out smaller strikes on Israel from neighbouring Lebanon.

On Sunday an Iranian official warned Israel's embassies were "no longer safe", suggesting a consulate building could be a possible target.

Experts have also suggested Iran could target Israel with a cyberattack.

Thirteen people were killed in the 1 April attack on the Iranian consulate building, including senior Iranian military leaders.

Israel has not claimed responsibility for the attack, but is widely considered to have been behind it.

US and Israeli forces in the region have been put on high alert in the days since.

Mr Biden's remarks came as he was speaking to journalists at the White House on Wednesday alongside Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

"As I told Prime Minister Netanyahu, our commitment to Israel's security against these threats from Iran and its proxies is ironclad — let me say it again, ironclad," Mr Biden said.

His comments come one day after Mr Biden, in an interview, called for a ceasefire in Gaza and said he disagreed with Mr Netanyahu's war strategy.

"I think what he's doing is a mistake. I don't agree with his approach," he said in an interview with Univision that was recorded a week ago.

It also comes nearly a week after a tense phone call between Mr Biden and Mr Netanyahu in the wake of the Israeli killing of seven humanitarian aid workers in Gaza.

Mr Biden has sharpened his rhetoric over Israel's conduct in the nearly six-month-old war sparked by Hamas's 7 October attack, and voiced his growing frustration with Mr Netanyahu.

US officials have been attempting to send a message to the Iranians that, despite differences of opinion between Mr Biden and Mr Netanyahu, any attack on Israel will met with an aggressive US response.

In an effort to ease tensions, the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and Iraq spoke to their Iranian counterpart this week, according to Axios.

The ministers were asked to convey a message from Mr Biden's senior Middle East advisor, Brett McGurk, about the need to de-escalate.

According to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry, more than 33,000 people - mostly women and children - have been killed in the Israeli incursion.

The conflict was sparked by Hamas's killing of more than 1,200 people in Israel and the taking of 253 hostages in its October attack.

South Korean opposition wins parliamentary vote in landslide - BBC

Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party, right, and wife Kim Hye-kyungGetty Images

South Korea's liberal opposition party has won a landslide majority in the country's general election to retain control of parliament.

The Democratic Party (DPK) and smaller opposition parties jointly won 192 of 300 seats in the National Assembly.

The vote is widely seen as a midterm referendum on President Yoon Suk Yeol, who has three years left in office.

His party leader Han Dong-hoon has resigned and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo has offered to resign.

This is a crushing defeat for Mr Yoon and his People Power Party (PPP), which has been struggling to achieve its agenda in a legislature dominated by the DPK. The DPK's win means they will be able to fast-track and push legislation through parliament.

Both the DPK and PPP use breakaway satellite parties to maximise their vote under South Korea's electoral system, which assigns some seats to smaller parties whose seat counts fall short of their overall support.

"This isn't the Democratic Party's victory but a great victory for the people," said DPK leader Lee Jae-myung on Thursday.

"Politicians on both sides of the aisle must pool our strength to deal with the current economic crisis. The Democratic Party will lead the way in solving the livelihood crisis," he told reporters.

Today's result could embolden Mr Lee, who narrowly lost the 2022 presidential election to Mr Yoon, to make another presidential run.

Mr Yoon is under pressure to address a number of issues including rising food prices, a rapidly aging population and an ongoing doctor's strike.

In recent weeks, he has been criticised for appearing to be out of touch with the impact of inflation on voters.

Just last month, he was criticised for commenting during a visit to a Seoul supermarket that a bundle of green onions priced at 875 won (£0.51; $0.65) was "reasonable".

The item had been priced at discount because of subsidies and would normally have cost between 3,000 and 4,000 won.

The comment sparked a backlash, with bundles of green onions later being used as props at farmers' protests and DPK election rallies.

Mr Yoon's wife, Kim Keon Hee, has also been embroiled in a controversy for allegedly accepting a luxury bag as a gift, while separate corruption and abuse of power allegations have been levelled at senior members of his party.

The DPK has also been beleaguered by its own political controversies and internal struggles, and has faced corruption allegations.

Donald Trump's last-ditch bid to delay hush money trial shot down by judge in one sentence - The Mirror

Former US president Donald Trump's latest attempt to delay his hush money criminal trial was rejected by an appeals court judge in one single sentence.

The criminal trial is due to start on April 15 but Trump's lawyers had argued at an emergency hearing that the trial should be postponed while they seek a change of venue to move it out of Manhattan. Trump lawyer Emil Bove argued that the presumptive Republican nominee faces “real potential prejudice” as a defendant in the heavily Democratic borough.

Citing defence surveys and a review of media coverage, Bove argued that jury selection, scheduled to start next Monday, “cannot proceed in a fair manner”. Steven Wu, appellate chief for the Manhattan district attorney’s office, noted that trial Judge Juan Merchan had already rejected Trump’s requests to move or delay the trial as untimely.

“The question in this case is not whether a random poll of New Yorkers from whatever neighbourhood are able to be impartial, it’s about whether a trial court is able to select a jury of 12 impartial jurors,” Mr Wu said. After hearing arguments from Trump's lawyers and representatives from the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, Judge Lizbeth Gonzalez announced her decision on Monday.

"Defendant's application for a stay of trial, pursuant to CPL § [section] 230.30, pending the determination of defendant's motion for change of venue, is denied," the judge wrote following the hearing on Monday. Gonzalez did not offer reasoning behind her decision.

The former US president has tried repeatedly to get the trial postponed and barring further action, the decision means the first of Trump's four criminal trials will start as scheduled on April 15. Trump is accused of falsifying his company’s records to hide the nature of payments to his former lawyer Michael Cohen, who allegedly helped him bury negative stories during his 2016 campaign.

Cohen’s activities included paying porn actor Stormy Daniels $130,000 to allegedly suppress her claims of an extramarital sexual encounter with Trump years earlier. Trump pleaded not guilty last year to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. He has denied having a sexual encounter with Daniels. His lawyers argue the payments to Cohen were legitimate legal expenses.

Harry Litman, senior legal affairs columnist for The Los Angeles Times, said on X of Trump's latest attempt to delay the trial: "Appellate division judge denies Trump attempt to delay trial in one sentence unsigned order. Doesn't even refer it to a panel. He is flailing and embarrassing himself within the legal system."

In a separate matter, Trump’s lawyers are also challenging a gag order imposed on him in the case, which Judge Merchan recently expanded to prohibit Trump from making comments about the judge’s family. The appeals court signalled it would take up that matter at a later date.

Last week, Trump renewed his request for the judge to step aside from the case, citing Judge Merchan’s daughter’s work as the head of a firm whose clients have included his rival President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and other Democrats.

The former president alleges the judge is biased against him and has a conflict of interest because of his daughter’s work. The judge rejected a similar request last August. Trump has also made numerous other attempts to get the trial postponed, echoing a strategy he’s deployed in his other criminal cases. “We want delays,” Trump proclaimed to TV cameras outside a February pretrial hearing in his hush-money case.

Judge Merchan last week rejected his request to delay the trial until the U.S. Supreme Court rules on presidential immunity claims he raised in another of his criminal cases. The New York judge has yet to rule on another defence delay request, which claims that Trump won’t get a fair trial because of “prejudicial media coverage.” Trump has suggested on social media that the trial should be moved to Staten Island, the only New York City borough he won in 2016 and 2020.
