Turbulence: Twelve injured on Doha-Dublin flight - BBC.com

Turbulence on Doha-Dublin flight leaves 12 injured

Twelve people have been injured due to turbulence on a flight from Doha to Dublin.

The Boeing 787-9 dreamliner experienced turbulence while airborne over Turkey, Dublin Airport's operator DAA said.

Upon landing shortly before 13:00 local time, Qatar Airways flight QR017 was met by emergency services including airport police, ambulance and fire officers.

Six passengers and six crew members reported injuries - of these, eight people have been taken to hospital.

Ireland's National Ambulance Service said it received a pre-alert to attend the airport and was "on site facilitating and supporting the disembarkment of passengers". Dublin Fire Brigade staff and emergency vehicles also attended.

A DAA spokesperson said: "The Dublin Airport team continues to provide full assistance on the ground to passengers and airline staff."

'Panic on everyone's faces'

Passengers described the incident as frightening.

They said the plane seemed to drop out of the air for about five seconds during food-and-drinks service.

One passenger, named Cathal, who was travelling home to Ireland from Doha, told Irish broadcaster RTÉ that the seatbelt signs were off during the incident and that his dinner had come off his lap.

"Just food all over the plane, on the ceiling, everywhere," he said.

Another, Paul Mocc, said he saw people hitting the roof of the aircraft.

"I had my seatbelt on at the time, but they were serving food at the time so a lot of the crew were injured."

Mr Mocc added that he saw crew members limping after the incident, some with bandages on, but said that they continued to serve passengers.

He also described seeing one passenger on oxygen with suspected back injuries who had been placed lying down across a number of seats.

Emma Rose Power and Conor Buckley were travelling back to Dublin from Thailand when they were caught up in the incident.

Mr Buckley said he felt the plane drop and a flight attendant went "up in the air".

Ms Power said she was asleep when the plane hit turbulence but described seeing a "look of panic on everyone's faces" when she was woken.

She added that flight attendants had scratches on their faces and one had their arm in a sling afterwards.

'Worst experience flying'

Another passenger, Eileen, said it was the "worst experience" she ever had on a plane.

Her partner Tony said he had had to hold her down as she had not been wearing her seatbelt and she had been asleep when the aircraft hit turbulence.

"I am not in a hurry to get back on a plane I can tell you," Eileen said.

Qatar Airways told BBC News NI in a statement that "a small number of passengers and crew sustained minor injuries in flight and are now receiving medical attention".

It added: "The matter is now subject to an internal investigation."

Overall operations at Dublin Airport were unaffected, DAA said. It said the return flight to Doha was scheduled to operate as normal on Sunday afternoon, "albeit with a delay".

The incident follows the death of a 73-year-old British man on a Singapore-bound flight which experienced severe turbulence earlier this week.

More than 100 people were injured, 20 of whom are in intensive care with spinal injuries.

Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong apologised, offering his “deepest apologies to everyone affected” by the “sudden extreme turbulence”.

Singapore's government has promised a thorough investigation.

Two children among at least 15 dead after severe storms tear across US - The Independent

At least 15 people have died, including two children, in Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kentucky after violent storms ripped through the region, spawning tornados and leaving hundreds of thousands of residents without power during potentially record-breaking heat.

In Texas, multiple tornados were reported throughout the state with one plowing through Cooke County – approximately 50 miles north of Dallas – leaving seven people dead.

“It’s just a trail of debris left. The devastation is pretty severe,” Cooke County Sheriff Ray Sappington told the Associated Press.

Approximately 60 to 80 people were injured at an AP Travel Stop and Shell station alongside I-35 after it collapsed, where dozens were sheltering. Those injuries are considered non-life threatening.

The sheriff confirmed that a 2-year-old and a 5-year-old were among those killed in Cooke County. The victims also included three family members who were found in a home near Valley View – a rural community close to the Oklahoma border.

Damaging winds, thunderstorms and two-inch hail pounded areas of Oklahoma, Arkansas and Kentucky leaving thousands of residents without power.

At least five people died in Arkansas as a result of the storm – one person in Benton County, local authorities said in a press conference on Sunday, two people in Marion County, the sheriff’s department said, one person in Baxter County, the sheriff’s department said, and a 26-year-old woman who was found outside a home in Boone County, according to AP.

In Oklahoma, at least two people were killed in Mayes County after a tornado with an EF2 ripped through the northeast part of the state.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said that one person died in Louisville as a result of the storm.

More severe weather is expected to hit the region throughout Sunday and move eastern through Memorial Day. On Saturday, the National Weather Service issued severe thunderstorm warnings and tornado warnings for parts of the region, advising people to seek shelter as a low-pressure system collided with extreme heat.

As daylight broke on Sunday, residents across the states woke up to downed power lines, destroyed businesses and homes, trees toppled over and more. Search and rescue missions are currently underway.

More than 300,000 residents in Texas, Arkansas and Kentucky were without power, according to PowerOutage.us.

The NWS Weather Prediction Center warned that the severe storms were shifting east and could bring heavy rain, thunderstorms or hail to parts of the Mid-Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee valleys on Monday.

Storms currently over the central Plains and Ohio Valley are expected “to grow upscale and merge into a larger complex”, according to the weather warnings, while expanding through parts of Missouri, Illinois, western Kentucky and other neighboring states.

Meanwhile, dangerous and “potentially record-breaking” heat continued to beat down on parts of Texas, the Western Gulf and southern Florida.

Airstrike on Rafah reportedly kills 22 after Hamas launches rockets at Tel Aviv - Sky News

An Israeli airstrike on Rafah has killed 22 people, local medics say, after Hamas launched rocket attacks towards Tel Aviv for the first time in months.

The strike in on the southern Gaza city hit tents for displaced people, according to Palestinian medics. Footage from the scene shows heavy destruction.

The initial report coming out of the territory said 22 people had been killed. A second report said that the dead and wounded numbered "dozens".

A spokesperson with the Palestinian Red Crescent Society said the death toll was likely to increase as search and rescue efforts continued in Rafah's Tal al Sultan neighbourhood west of the city centre.

The society said the location had been designated by Israel as a "humanitarian area."

There was no immediate comment from the IDF.

On Friday, the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to halt its Rafah offensive, with Israel insisting it is key to its self-defence and goal of destroying Hamas entirely.

Hamas fires rockets towards Tel Aviv

The strike on Rafah comes after Hamas launched rocket attacks from Gaza towards Tel Aviv earlier on Sunday.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage in what appeared to be the first long-range rocket attack from Gaza since January, although Palestinian militants have continued to sporadically fire rockets and mortar rounds at communities along the Gaza border since then.

Hamas's military wing claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Israeli military said eight projectiles crossed into Israel after being launched from the southern Gaza city of Rafah, where Israeli forces recently launched an incursion.

Israel's Iron Dome defence system intercepted several of the missiles, it added.

Earlier on Sunday, aid trucks entered Gaza via Israel's Kerem Shalom crossing for the first time since a new aid agreement was struck.

Aid routes were rediverted after Egypt closed its side of the Rafah crossing over Israel's decision to seize control of the Gaza side.

Hamas rockets will encourage Israel to keep fighting

Hamas still fires rockets into Israel, almost daily, but they are largely short-range and aimed at the border communities.

The 10 missiles that were fired from Rafah towards northern Tel Aviv on Sunday afternoon show that the group still has the capability to strike at longer range, despite almost eight months of fighting.

It will also serve as proof for Israel that it must continue fighting in Rafah if it is to successfully eliminate Hamas.

To halt operations there now, as the International Court of Justice ordered it do on Friday, would leave Hamas infrastructure intact and deny Israel a chance to claim victory.

This conundrum is why Washington pushed Israel so hard to consider a different approach for Rafah - one that would mean it could continue fighting Hamas but with reduced impact on civilians and limited international outrage.

Israel largely ignored its ally and ploughed on regardless, South Africa took the issue to the ICJ again and the court ordered a halt. No doubt some in Washington have been thinking "we told you so".

It now remains to be seen whether Israel abides by this or defiantly keeps on fighting. The rockets fired at Israel on Sunday will encourage the latter.

It is unclear whether humanitarian groups will be able to access incoming aid because of ongoing fighting in Rafah, however.

Israeli protests over hostages

In Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing growing pressure to make a deal with Hamas to free its remaining hostages after several bodies were recovered recently.

There were large protests in Tel Aviv on Saturday night, with scuffles breaking out between protesters and police.

Now in its eighth month, the Israel-Hamas war has killed almost 36,000 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry.

The vast majority of Gaza's two million-strong population has been displaced.

Hamas's attack on Israel on 7 October last year killed 1,200 people, with militants taking some 250 hostages, around 100 of whom remain in captivity in Gaza.

Papua New Guinea: More than 670 killed by landslide, new local estimates say - Sky News

More than 670 people have been killed by a landslide in northern Papua New Guinea on Friday, according to new calculations by local officials.

The landslide hit the Pacific nation at around 3am local time on Friday (7pm on Thursday UK time) and levelled the mountainous Kaokalam village in Enga Province - about 370 miles (600km) northwest of the capital Port Moresby.

Serhan Aktoprak, chief of the United Nations' (UN) International Organization for Migration mission on the island nation, said the revised number of dead is based on calculations by Yambali village and Enga provincial officials that more than 150 homes had been buried. The previous estimate had been 60 homes.

The UN estimated on Sunday that more than 4,000 people have been impacted after more than a thousand homes were buried.

According to Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), more than six villages were hit by the landslide in the province's Mulitaka region.

Three bodies were pulled from an area where 40 to 50 homes were destroyed. Six people, including a child, were pulled from the rubble alive, reports say.

Survivors searched through tonnes of earth and rubble by hand looking for missing relatives while a first emergency convoy delivered food, water and other provisions on Saturday.

But Mr Aktoprak added on Sunday: "Hopes to take the people out alive from the rubble have diminished now."

Friday's landslide has left debris up to eight metres deep across 200 sq km, cutting off road access, which was making relief efforts difficult. Helicopters are the only way to reach the area.

"More homes could be at risk if the landslide continues down the mountain," a spokesperson for the humanitarian group CARE Australia said in a statement.

In February, at least 26 men were killed in Enga Province in an ambush amid tribal violence that prompted Prime Minister James Marape to give arrest powers to the country's military.

Mr Marape has said disaster officials, the defence force and the department of works and highways were assisting with relief and recovery efforts.

Papua New Guinea is a diverse, developing nation of mostly subsistence farmers with 800 languages. There are few roads outside the larger cities.

With around 10 million people, it is the most populous South Pacific nation after Australia, which is home to around 27 million.

It is located on the eastern half of the island of New Guinea and sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the arc of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean where much of the world's earthquake and volcanic activity occurs.

In March, the country was hit by a 6.9-magnitude earthquake.

The United States and Australia are building closer defence ties with the strategically important nation, while China is also seeking closer security and economic ties.

US President Joe Biden and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said their governments stood ready to help respond to the landslide.

India: Newborn babies killed in fire at hospital in Delhi after 'chain of explosions' - Sky News

At least six newborn babies have died after a fire broke out at a children's hospital in India, according to reports.

Firefighters said they carried 12 newborns out of the centre in the Vivek Vihar district of east New Delhi late on Saturday night, but six of them died due to smoke inhalation.

Another infant is believed to have died on Sunday morning, according to local media. There are differing reports as to whether six or seven infants have been killed so far.

Another five survived and are being treated in a nearby hospital, Delhi fire department chief Atul Garg said.

The blaze, which broke out on the first floor of the hospital, was put out after about an hour.

Mr Garg told the ANI news agency that an oxygen cylinder blast was the likely cause of the fire, but there has been no official confirmation.

"It was a very tough operation," he was quoted as saying by India Today.

"We made two teams. One team started firefighting because there was a blast of cylinders. We can say it was a chain of blasts of cylinders.

"We had to save ourselves also. We started rescue operations for babies as well. Unfortunately, we could not save all the children... That is a regrettable incident."

At least 27 people killed in huge fire at amusement park in India - The Guardian

At least 27 people, most of them children, have died after a huge fire broke out at an amusement park in western India, police said.

The fire erupted at the park in the city of Rajkot in Gujarat state on Saturday. Police commissioner Raju Bhargava said the fire was under control and the rescue operation was under way.

More than 300 people were in a two-storey structure at the park when the blaze broke out as it was a summer holiday weekend, Rajkot fire officer Ilesh Kher told reporters.

Prabhav Joshi, the district collector of Rajkot, said: “People got trapped as a temporary structure at the facility collapsed near the entrance, making it difficult for the people to come out.”

Footage showed firefighters clearing debris around collapsed tin roof structures that media reports said were used for bowling, go-karting and trampoline attractions.

Bhargava said the police would file a case of negligence against the amusement park’s owner, Yuvraj Singh Solanki.

“We will be registering an offence for negligence and the deaths which have occurred. Further investigation will take place once we complete the rescue operation,” he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The prime minister, Narendra Modi, wrote on X that he was “extremely distressed by the fire. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. Prayers for the injured.”

It took nearly an hour to douse the fire, with about a dozen ambulances carrying the injured to hospital.

Fire department officials said a short-circuit was suspected as the cause and police at the site said the bodies of the dead were heavily burned, making identification difficult.

Fires are common in India due to poor building practices, overcrowding and a lack of adherence to safety regulations.

In February, 11 people were killed in a fire that ripped through a paint factory in the capital New Delhi.

In 2022, at least 27 people died and dozens more were injured after a huge fire broke out at a four-storey commercial building in the city.

In 2016, more than 100 people were killed after a large explosion during a banned fireworks display in the southern state of Kerala.
