Biden faces donor pressure as he digs in on re-election bid - BBC

President Joe Biden Reuters

President Joe Biden is facing pressure from some major Democratic donors as he faces a critical few days in his campaign for re-election.

A number of donors are publicly warning they will withhold funds unless Mr Biden is replaced as the party's candidate following his disastrous debate performance last week.

They include Abigail Disney, an heiress to the Disney family fortune, Hollywood producer Damon Lindelof, Hollywood agent Ari Emanuel, and philanthropist and entrepreneur Gideon Stein.

Mr Biden is seeking to shore up his candidacy this weekend, including with a rare primetime TV interview on Friday and a rally in Wisconsin.

Pressure on Mr Biden, 81, to step aside has grown following a debate marked by several instances where he lost his train of thought and was incomprehensible.

While he admitted that he "screwed up" that night, he has vowed to stay on as his party's standard-bearer taking on Donald Trump in the November presidential election.

"I'm not going anywhere," he said on Thursday at a White House gathering marking 4 July Independence Day in the US.

Ms Disney told the US business news channel CNBC that she did not believe that Mr Biden could win against Trump in November.

She said her intent to pull support was rooted in “realism, not disrespect”.

“Biden is a good man and has served his country admirably, but the stakes are far too high,” Ms Disney, who has supported a number of Democrats and Democratic causes over the years, said.

“If Biden does not step down the Democrats will lose. Of that I am absolutely certain. The consequences for the loss will be genuinely dire.”

With her warning, she joined a handful of other wealthy donors.

Mr Stein told the New York Times that his family was withholding $3.5m (£2.8m) to non-profit and political organisations active in the presidential race unless Mr Biden steps aside.

Mr Lindelof, who has donated more than $100,000 to Democrats this election cycle, wrote a public essay urging other donors to withhold their funds in what he dubbed a “DEMbargo”.

“When they text you asking for cash, text back that you’re not giving them a penny and you won’t change your mind until there’s change at the top of the ticket,” Mr Lindelof wrote in Deadline.

Mr Emanuel - the brother of Rahm Emanuel, a former Barack Obama chief of staff - told a conference in Colorado that withholding funding was the key to ensuring Mr Biden's exit from the race, the Financial Times reported on Thursday.

“The lifeblood to a campaign is money, and maybe the only way . . . is if the money starts drying up,” he said, according to the newspaper.

“You’ll see in the next couple weeks, if the money comes in . . . I talked to a bunch of big donors, and they’re moving all their money to Congress and the Senate.”

Some other major donors have not threatened to cut funding but are putting public pressure on the president to withdraw.

Reed Hastings, co-founder of Netflix and one of the biggest donors to the Democratic Party, told US media that Mr Biden "needs to step aside to allow a vigorous Democratic leader to beat Trump and keep us safe and prosperous”.

Others have expressed concerns about the possibility of a damaging and chaotic race to replace Mr Biden if he does leave.

Ramesh Kapur, a Massachusetts-based Indian-American industrialist, has organised fundraisers for Democrats since 1988.

“I think it’s time for him to pass the torch,” Mr Kapur told the BBC this week. “I know he has the drive, but you can’t fight Mother Nature.”

“What I know of him, he will decide what’s good for the country,” he added.

There are some who are worried there's not enough time left for a new candidate to join the race, and they have decided to back Biden if he stays on.

A mega-donor the BBC spoke to this week, who declined to be named, said he planned to go ahead with a fundraiser for the president scheduled for later this month at his Virginia home.

"We all want to keep Donald Trump out of the White House, and probably that will keep us together," he said.

The Biden campaign has said it raised $38m from debate day through to the weekend, mainly through small donations - and a total of $127m in June alone.

The Biden team and the president have conceded he had a difficult debate but have said he is ready to show the public he has the stamina for the campaign.

On Friday, he is scheduled to sit down with ABC - the first television interview after the debate - to help quell concerns about his age and mental faculties.

He will also travel to Madison, Wisconsin to campaign with Governor Tony Evers.

But the president is facing a series of negative polls which suggest his Republican rival’s lead has widened in the wake of the Atlanta debate.

A New York Times poll published on Wednesday suggested Trump was now holding his biggest lead yet at six points.

And a separate poll published by the BBC’s US partner CBS News suggested a slight shift towards Trump, who had a three-point lead over Mr Biden in the crucial battleground states.

Hezbollah claims it has fired 200 rockets into Israel in one of largest barrages yet - Sky News

Analysis: Is an Israeli invasion of Lebanon inevitable?

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) was anticipating a heavy response from Hezbollah after they killed a senior commander in southern Lebanon yesterday.

However this is the second incident of its kind in three weeks and each time it happens, tensions ratchet up and the possibility of all-out war gets closer.

If the damage to Israel is minimal – few or no casualties, limited impact on infrastructure – then the situation should remain contained for now.

But more than 200 rockets and drones have the potential for mistake and there are voices in Israel increasingly urging the government to launch an invasion of Lebanon sooner rather than later.

All sources I speak to in the region continue to insist that Hezbollah, Iran and Syria do not want a war with Israel and Hezbollah's attacks will stop when a ceasefire is reached in Gaza.

Only on Tuesday, Hezbollah's deputy leader publicly reiterated this position. Hezbollah is also facing some domestic opposition in Lebanon from groups who fear they are dragging the country to the point of no return.

A ceasefire has looked unlikely in recent weeks, talks had pretty much stopped, but on Wednesday night Hamas submitted a new proposal that reportedly walks back on its demands for an immediate and permanent ceasefire before any hostages are released

This had been the main sticking point to a deal. Benjamin Netanyahu is set to discuss this with President Biden on a phone call later today, as well as meet with his security cabinet this evening. Having spent the past two days meeting government officials in the region, there is a desperate hope that a ceasefire will bring some calm on all fronts and then, intense discussions can start on resolving the Israel-Lebanon border situation.

But Israel still has 80,000 of its citizens displaced and insists it will not return to the pre-7 October situation with Hezbollah on its border - so many people think some form of Israeli invasion is inevitable.

The IDF is expected to transition to a new, less intense phase of fighting in Gaza in the coming weeks.

Unnamed senior IDF figures have briefed news organisations that they would like a hostage deal in Gaza rather than immediate redeployment to the Lebanon border.

Joe Biden 'seriously considering' leaving US election race - The Telegraph

Joe Biden has for the first time said that he is considering ending his presidential campaign, according to reports.

After days of criticism over his disastrous performance in last week’s debate against Donald Trump, the US president told allies he “knows if he has two more events like that” then he is in a “different place”, according to a report in The New York Times.

In his latest fundraising appeal email to supporters, however, Mr Biden repeated: “I’m running”.

“Folks, I know the past few days have been tough,” read the email, quoted by CNN on Wednesday evening.

“I’m sure you’re getting a lot of questions. I’m sure many of you have questions as well. So, let me say this as clearly and simply as I can: I’m running,” the email says.

The Democratic governors of New York, Minnesota and Maryland, who were among the state leaders who met with Mr Biden on Wednesday, expressed confidence in him and said they had an honest discussion after his debate performance.

“We were honest about the feedback that we were getting,” Maryland Governor Wes Moore told reporters after the meeting at the White House.

“We said that we would stand with him.” Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said he believed Mr Biden was “fit for office”.

Earlier, Mr Biden had reportedly told campaign staff he would not be running again if he “didn’t believe with all my heart and soul” that he could perform the job of President.

Mr Biden’s White House team is hoping that he can recover his campaign with an energetic appearance at two rallies and in a television interview this weekend. He is also expected to host a July 4 holiday barbecue at the White House on Thursday.

It came as a new poll by Siena College found Mr Biden has dropped three points in a head-to-head race with Trump since before last Thursday’s event, and is now six points behind.

Aides say that the 81-year-old leader is “well aware of the political challenge he faces”, but a spokesman described the claim he was considering giving up the Democratic nomination as “absolutely false”.

Another source told CNN the US President would consider dropping out if “the polls are plummeting, the fundraising is drying up, and the interviews are going badly”.

Democrats have been clamouring for Mr Biden to give up his campaign and speculation is mounting that he could be replaced by Kamala Harris, the vice-president.

The Republican Party has begun putting out attack adverts about Ms Harris, suggesting that she is an “enabler in chief” responsible for a White House cover-up of the poor state of her running mate’s health.

The pair met for lunch at the White House on Wednesday before appearing on an all-staff call with their team.

Mr Biden said on the call: “I am running. I am the leader of the Democratic Party. No one is pushing me out.”

The leaked suggestions that Mr Biden is actively considering ending his campaign prompted speculation by some analysts that the White House is using the next few days as a test of Mr Biden’s viability as the Democrat nominee.

The campaign rallies in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, two key swing states, will be followed by an interview broadcast on ABC News on Sunday.

Aides reportedly hope that they will help Democrats to set aside concerns about his age and mental agility.

However, the calls for Mr Biden to reconsider his campaign continued yesterday, amid reports that some House Democrats are organising a letter calling for him to stand down.

Reed Hastings, a major Democratic Party donor and a co-founder of the streaming platform Netflix, on Wednesday joined those calling on Mr Biden to stand down.

“Biden needs to step aside to allow a vigorous Democratic leader to beat Trump and keep us safe and prosperous,” he was quoted as saying in an email to The New York Times.

Two Democrat congressmen, Lloyd Doggett and Raul Grijalva, have called on Mr Biden to make the decision to withdraw, while two other sitting Democrats have said they think he will lose the election to Trump.

“If [Mr Biden] is the candidate, I’m going to support him, but I think that this is an opportunity to look elsewhere,” said Mr Grijalva, a Democrat representative from Arizona.

“What he needs to do is shoulder the responsibility for keeping that seat — and part of that responsibility is to get out of this race.”

Karine Jean-Pierre, Mr Biden’s spokesman, said he was “absolutely not” going to leave the race, describing last week’s debate as a “bad night”.

Mr Biden himself has said he practically “fell asleep on the stage” because of a busy schedule in the weeks that preceded the debate.

On Wednesday night, Mr Biden hosted Democratic governors, including several politicians touted as his possible replacement, at the White House for a meeting about the crisis.

A spokesman for Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, said he was attending the meeting to “stand with” the president.

The Cayman Islands are bracing Thursday morning for Hurricane Beryl, now a Category 3 storm, to pass by, bringing with it 120mph (195km/h) strong winds and dangerous storm surge as it moves away from Jamaica.

Hurricane Beryl hit Jamaica with life-threatening rain, 145mph winds and storm surge, with the storm knocking down power lines in Portland, the Jamaica Observer reports.

After imposing a curfew overnight on Wednesday, the Jamaican government has now discontinued its Hurricane Warning as Beryl starts to move away, however, rainfall and flash-flooding still pose a risk on the island.

There are more than 900 shelters across Jamaica and an evacuation process for those in flood-prone areas, Information Minister Dana Morris Dixon said.

The storm’s eye is approaching the Cayman Islands Thursday before heading toward Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

Hurricane Beryl has killed at least eight people. The storm intensified to the earliest Category 5 storm recorded in the Atlantic overnight before weakening back to Category 4 on Tuesday.

While the storm is expected to weaken later this week, it will likely remain a major hurricane. Hurricane Beryl has the potential to hit southern Texas and Louisiana over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Grenada was left with “unimaginable” destruction after the storm passed through Monday, Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell said. Officials said 98 percent of buildings in the nation of 6,000 had been damaged or destroyed.

400,000 without power in Jamaica after Hurricane Beryl battered island

Hundreds of thousands of homes are without power in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl’s destruction after its conditions hit Jamaica on Wednesday.

The country’s energy provider, JPS, said that 65 per cent, which is around 400,000 of its customers, were left without power on Thursday morning.

The Jamaican government said on Wednesday several roadways in the country’s interior settlements were impacted by fallen trees and utility poles, while some communities in the northern section and the capital were without electricity.

Death toll rises to at least eight after Beryl tearing through the Caribbean

At least one person more has died as Beryl devastates the southeastern Caribbean after one death was confirmed in Jamaica.

A woman has been killed after a tree fell on her house in the western parish of Hanover, Richard Thompson, the head of the country’s disaster agency, told The New York Times.

A rescue team was also searching for a 20-year-old man who had been swept away in a gully after he was trying to retrieve a ball he was playing with in Kingston, the newspaper reports.

At least three people died in Venezuela, three died in Grenada and one person died in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Weather is deteriorating in the Cayman Islands as Beryl’s core nears

While Hurricane Beryl has dropped down to a Category 3, the National Hurricane Centre warns that it is still forecast to be ‘near major hurricane intensity’ on Thursday as it passes by the Cayman Islands.

As of 5am EDT (10am GMT), Beryl was located just 55 miles (90km) south-southeast of Grand Cayman. Weather is deteriorating in the Cayman Islands with strong winds, dangerous storm surge and damaging waves expected there later Thursday morning, the National Hurricane Center states in its most recent update.

A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac and the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico from Puerto Costa Maya to Cancun, including Cozumel.

Beryl’s winds have decreased, but are still at a strong 120mph (195 km/h).

Very soon, the Cayman Islands are expected to experience hurricane wind conditions, as well as in the Yucatan Peninsula late today or early Friday.

Storm surges could raise water levels along the immediate coast of the Cayman Islands as much as two to four feet above normal, bringing with it large and destructive waves.

Beryl is also bringing rainfall totals of four to six inches over the Cayman Islands on Thursday, the same expected for the Yucatan Peninsula later today into Friday. The Yucatan Peninsula could see localized amounts of 10 inches as well.

Scattered instances of flash flooding is expected over the region.

Hurricane conditions diminishing across Jamaica as it moves towards Cayman Islands

After Hurricane Beryl devastated several Caribbean islands this week and most recently battered Jamaica with Category 4-force winds, the National Hurricane Center said the extreme conditions should be subsiding around the island.

Storm surge should gradually be dwindling in Jamaica on Thursday morning; however, Beryl is still expected to produce rainfall totals of four to eight inches with localized amounts of 12 inches across this morning in the nation.

The rain could still cause life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides.

A Hurricane Warning has been discontinued in Jamaica as Beryl begins to move away from the island, the country’s Meteorological Service said on Wednesday night.

However, a flash flood watch was still in effect until 5am on Tuesday EST.

“With Jamaica now being outside of the range of hurricane force winds from Hurricane Beryl, and with storm surge no longer posing a threat to coastal areas of the island, the Hurricane Warning is being discontinued with immediate effect,” the Meteorological Service wrote in their bulletin.

Along with the continuing threats of rainfall and flash flooding in Jamaica in the aftermath of the hurricane, strong, gusty winds could still exist, and rising water levels will continue to affect southwestern coastal areas.

All small craft operators are urged to remain in port until sea conditions return to normal, the Meteorological Service said.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced that the curfew imposed in the island nation will be extended until Thursday morning amid continuing adverse weather conditions.

The curfew went into effect at 11.00pm Wednesday (4am GMT Thursday) and will stay through the night until 6am (11am GMT) on Thursday.

Hurricane Beryl dropped to a Category 3 storm

Hurricane Beryl has weakened to a Category 3 storm, however, it is still sustaining strong winds of 125mph (205 km/h), the National Hurricane Center has said in its most recent update.

Strong winds, dangerous storm surge and damaging waves are expected across the Cayman Islands overnight.

As of 2am EDT, the center of Hurricane Beryl was located by Grand Cayman and Air Force Hurricane Hunter radar imagery near latitude 18.3 North, longitude 80.1 West – around 110 miles (175km) southeast of Grand Cayman.

The core of Beryl will sweep just south of the Cayman Islands overnight and over the Yucatan Peninsula early Friday.

The hurricane is then expected to emerge over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico Friday night and turn northwestward.

Hurricane Beryl leaves Caribbean in 'immense destruction'

“The hurricane has come and gone, and it has left in its wake immense destruction,” prime minister Ralph Gonsalves of St Vincent and the Grenadines said.

In Grenada, prime minister Dickon Mitchell said they'll have to “We "rebuild from the ground up" after visiting the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, which sustained the maximum damage from Beryl.

“There’s no power and there’s almost complete destruction of homes and buildings on the island. The roads are not passable, and in many instances, they are cut off because of the large quantity of debris strewn all over the streets.”

Beryl is the earliest ever category 5 storm ever recorded. It occurred as ocean heat in the Atlantic was already higher due to global heating, nearing levels usually seen in peak season in September.

This has raised alarm over what the rest of the Atlantic hurricane season could be like.

“It’s really scary stuff,” Steve Maximay, a climate and agriculture expert in Grenada, told The Independent.

”When you talk about category four and five, there are very few systems or protocols that can prepare you for that. You can have resilient buildings but category five winds can move concrete structures.”

Hurricane Beryl is hitting Jamaica with life-threatening rain, 145mph winds and storm surge that could raise coastal levels by 9 feet after charting a deadly path through the eastern Caribbean.

High winds from the Category 4 storm have already knocked down power lines in Portland, the Jamaica Observer reports. Officials have declared Jamaica a disaster area and imposed a curfew for Wednesday.

There are more than 900 shelters across Jamaica and an evacuation process for those in flood-prone areas, Information Minister Dana Morris Dixon said.

Mexico's Caribbean coast prepares for 'rare' double strike of Hurricane Beryl

The head of Mexico's civil defence agency said that Hurricane Beryl is expected to make a rare double strike on Mexico.

Late on Wednesday night, the storm's centre was about 500 miles (800 kilometres) east-southeast of Tulum, Mexico.

It had maximum sustained winds of 130 mph (215 kph) and was moving west-northwest at 21 mph (32 kph). Hurricane strength winds extended 45 miles from the centre.

Laura Velazquez said the hurricane is expected to make landfall along a relatively unpopulated stretch of the Caribbean coast between Tulum and the inland town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto.

Because the coast there is largely made up of lagoons and mangroves, there are few resorts or hotels in the area south of Tulum.

On Wednesday, Mexican government officials moved sea turtle eggs off Cancun beaches in an attempt to protect them from storm surge.

The hurricane is expected to weaken to a tropical storm as it crosses the Yucatan peninsula and re-emerge over the weekend at storm strength into the Gulf of Mexico.

Ms Velazquez said that Beryl is then expected to hit Mexican territory a second time in the Gulf coast states of Veracruz or Tamaulipas, near the Texas border.

Curfew extended in Jamaica

Jamaican prime minister Andrew Holness announced that the curfew imposed in the island nation will be extended until Thursday morning amid continuing adverse weather conditions.

The storm caused flooding, mudslides and knocked off trees and electricity poles, cutting connectivity to several towns.

More than 400,000 people were without power, according to the Jamaica Gleaner newspaper, citing a public service company.

"After reviewing the current situation, it was assessed that the continuing weather conditions, in addition to consideration for public safety, public order, and the protection of property, warrant the declaration of a new curfew," Mr Holness wrote on X.

The curfew went into effect at 11.00pm Wednesday (4am GMT Thursday) and will stay through the night until 6am (11am GMT) on Thursday.

"This storm will pass, and we will recover," Mr Holness wrote.

Hurricane Beryl pulling away from Jamaica as it heads to Caymon Islands next

Ferocious winds, rainfall, and life-threating storm surges from Hurricane Beryl were still battering Jamaica on Wednesday night local time as the storm continues to tread westwards, eyeing Caymon Islands next.

The Jamaican government said several roadways in the country’s interior settlements were impacted by fallen trees and utility poles, while some communities in the northern section and the capital were without electricity.

Beryl was forecast to weaken slightly over the next day or two, but still be at or near major-hurricane strength when it passes near the Cayman Islands on Thursday morning and into Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula late Thursday or Friday, according to the US National Hurricane Centre.

The storm is still packing maximum sustained winds of 130mph (215kph), making it a category 4 storm, and was moving west-northwest at 21mph (32kph). Hurricane strength winds extended 45 miles from the centre.

Texans should monitor Hurricane Beryl’s path, meteorologists say

Projections from the National Weather Service show Hurricane Beryl has the potential to hit southern Texas on Monday afternoon.

As experts work to chart Hurricane Beryl’s path with more certainity, a meteorologist with Fox 35 Orlando says Texans should be on high alert.

“Continues on the point that the Texas coastline to Louisiana should keep tabs closely with Hurricane Beryl,” Noah Bergen said on X. “I think the most likely path at now would be more into far [southeast Texas] or [northeast Mexico], but there is clearly a wide range of outcomes.”

Meteorologists will have more clarity on Beryl’s path after it passes by Jamaica, Bergen said. Beryl will hit the Cayman Islands overnight before slamming into Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula on Thursday, the National Weather Service said.
