Israel accuses 'Iranian terrorism' of being behind 'suicide drone' attack on oil tanker - Daily Mail

Israel says 'Iranian terrorism' is behind 'suicide drone' attack on oil tanker which killed two crew including British army veteran

  • Tanker MV Mercer Street was attacked off the coast of Oman on Thursday
  • US officials said the attack was carried out by a suicide drone. Two were killed
  • According to the operating company, a Briton and a Romanian were the victims
  • Israeli foreign minister Yair Lapid blamed 'Iranian terrorism' for the attack

Israel has accused Iran of being behind a 'drone' attack on an oil tanker which killed two people - a British national and a Romanian citizen - off Oman's coast.

The tanker, called MV Mercer Street, is operated by London-based company Zodiac Maritime which is owned by Israeli shipping billionaire Eyal Ofer.

The company said it was working to establish what happened in the attack, which saw the vessel targeted north-east of the Omani island of Masirah, 185 miles south-east of the capital Muscat, on Thursday.

Speaking of Friday, Israeli foreign minister Yair Lapid blamed 'Iranian terrorism' for the attack, saying Tehran is 'sowing violence and destruction.'

The Islamic Republic 'is not only Israel's problem, but it is the world's problem. Its behaviour threatens the freedom of navigation and global commerce', he added.

A US official said it appeared a 'suicide drone' was used in the incident, raising the possibility that a government or a militia group was behind the incident.

Analysts said the attack bore all the hallmarks of tit-for-tat exchanges in the 'shadow war' between Israel and Iran, in which vessels linked to each nation have been targeted in waters around the Gulf.

The Israeli official warned that 'our campaign against them (Iran) will continue'.

Zodiac Maritime confirmed the incident on board the tanker left one Romanian and a UK national dead.

'We are not aware of harm to any other personnel,' it said in a statement, adding that the Japanese-owned tanker was back under the control of its crew and was steaming to an undisclosed 'safe location' under US naval escort.

The British victim worked as a guard for UK maritime security firm Ambrey, the company said.

The United States, a key ally of Israel and arch-rival of Iran, expressed concern and said it was monitoring the situation.

'We are urgently working with our partners, our international partners, to establish the facts,' a State Department spokeswoman said.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the raid. However, others have also blamed Iran amid the unravelling of Tehran's nuclear deal with world powers.

The tanker was in the northern Indian Ocean, travelling from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates at the time of the incident.

United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, a Royal Navy warning system for attacks on shipping, said an investigation was under way and that coalition forces were taking part.

Meir Javedanfar, an expert on Iranian diplomacy and security at Israel's IDC Herzliya university, told AFP news agency the attack was 'most probably Iran'.

Al-Alam, Iran's state TV channel in Arabic, citing 'informed regional sources' said the attack was a 'response to a recent Israeli attack' targeting an airport in central Syria. It did not provide further details.

Oman's state news agency said the country's navy dispatched a ship and confirmed the attack took place outside the sultanate's territorial waters.

Exact details of how the attack occurred have yet to be confirmed.

Javedanfar said Iranians 'feel badly disadvantaged when it comes to responding to attacks inside Iran which have been associated to Israel', including an April strike on the Natanz uranium enrichment site reportedly executed by Israel.

An attack on a maritime vessel 'is one area where (Iranians) feel they can try to at least retaliate,' he added, calling the latest strike an escalation in the 'shadow war' between the two Middle Eastern powerhouses.

But he assessed the fundamental dynamics of the rivalry would change little. 'Both sides will continue what they're doing,' he said.

Zodiac Maritime is part of the Zodiac Group, owned by billionaire Ofer, whose enterprises span shipping, real estate, technology, banking and investments.

Ofer was ranked the world's 197th richest person by Forbes this year, with a fortune of $11.3 billion. His firms own and operate over 160 ships.

The Arabian Sea and surrounding Indian Ocean were plagued by piracy around a decade ago, but incidents have waned in recent years after foreign navies stepped up patrols.

Zodiac initially called the attack on the MT Mercer Street 'a suspected piracy incident'.

The vessel was in the northern Indian Ocean, travelling from Dar es Salaam to Fujairah with no cargo onboard when the attack occurred, it added.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) - an anti-piracy taskforce run by the Royal Navy - also issued a report of 'a vessel being attacked' around 152 nautical miles (280 kilometres) off the coast of Oman.

It classed the incident as 'non-piracy'.

Maritime industry analysts Dryad Global said the attack was similar to previous incidents against vessels associated with Israel and Iran.

Two ships operated by Israeli firm Ray Shipping were attacked earlier this year.

'The attack on the MT Mercer Street is now assessed to be the fifth attack against a vessel connected to Israel,' Dryad said in an email note on the incident.

But it said before the deaths were confirmed that the loss of two personnel 'would represent a significant escalation in events that... would likely lead to significant international condemnation and would require diplomatic redress'.

It advised clients that the risk to commercial vessels associated with Israel and Iran in the Gulf waterway was 'heightened', pointing to lingering tensions between the two powers over Iran's nuclear ambitions.

'Such incidents remain irregular and are highly unlikely to impact normal commercial operations throughout the region,' it added.

Israel considers Iran to be its biggest threat, citing Tehran's hostile rhetoric, support for anti-Israeli militant groups and growing influence in the region.

The remarks came after an earlier report from private maritime intelligence firm Dryad Global referred to a drone sighting involving the vessel prior to the attack.

Iran and Yemen's Tehran-backed Houthi rebels have employed 'suicide' drones in the past. These are unmanned aircraft loaded with explosives that detonate on impact with a target.

British maritime security firm Ambrey confirmed the attack had killed one of its team members.

It said it was working with authorities and offering support to the victim's family. Omani officials did not respond to requests for comment.

The sultanate sits on the eastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula and is along vital shipping routes for cargo and energy moving through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf.

The deaths mark the first fatalities after years of assaults targeting shipping in the region.

Other Israeli-linked ships have been targeted in recent months amid a shadow war with Iran, with Israeli officials blaming the Islamic Republic for the assaults.

Israel, meanwhile, has been suspected in a series of major attacks targeting Iran's nuclear programme. Iran also saw its largest warship recently sink in mysterious circumstances in the nearby Gulf of Oman.

Thursday's attack comes amid heightened tensions over Iran's tattered nuclear deal and as negotiations over restoring the accord have stalled in Vienna.

The series of ship attacks suspected to have been carried out by Iran began a year after then US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew America from the accord in 2018.

Iranian media quoted foreign press reports on Thursday's attack but did not offer anything more.

U.S. Navy explosive experts believe a 'drone strike' targeted an oil tanker that came under attack off the coast of Oman in the Arabian Sea, killing two on board, the American military said Saturday.

The strike Thursday night on the oil tanker Mercer Street marks the first-known fatal attack after years of assaults on commercial shipping in the region linked to tensions with Iran over its tattered nuclear deal. While no one has claimed responsibility for the attack, Israeli officials alleged Tehran launched the drone strike.

While Iran did not directly acknowledge the attack, the strike comes as Tehran now appears poised to take an even tougher approach with the West as the country prepares to inaugurate a hard-line protégé of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as president.

The American nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan and the guided missile destroyer USS Mitscher were escorting the Mercer Street as it headed to a safe port, the U.S. Navy's Mideast-based 5th Fleet said in a statement early Saturday.

'U.S. Navy explosives experts are aboard to ensure there is no additional danger to the crew, and are prepared to support an investigation into the attack,' the 5th Fleet said. 'Initial indications clearly point to a (drone)-style attack.'

The 5th Fleet statement did not explain how it determined a drone caused the damage, although it described its explosive experts finding 'clear visual evidence that an attack had occurred' aboard the Mercer Street. The U.S. military's Central Command did not immediately respond to a questions on the evidence.

The Mercer Street is managed by London-based Zodiac Maritime, part of Israeli billionaire Eyal Ofer´s Zodiac Group. The firm said the attack killed two crew members, one from the United Kingdom and the other from Romania. It did not name them, nor did it describe what happened in the assault. It said it believed no other crew members on board were harmed.

British maritime security firm Ambrey said the attack on Mercer Street had killed one of its team members on board the vessel.

The Mercer Street, empty of cargo, had been on its way from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, at the time of the attack, Zodiac Maritime said. The attack targeted the tanker just northeast of the Omani island of Masirah, over 300 kilometers (185 miles) southeast of Oman´s capital, Muscat. Oman's state-run news agency late Friday described the area as 'beyond Omani regional waters' and said its forces responded to the tanker's mayday call.

Zodiac Maritime described the Mercer Street´s owners as Japanese, without naming them. Shipping authority Lloyd´s List identified the vessel´s ultimate owner as Taihei Kaiun Co., which belongs to the Tokyo-based Nippon Yusen Group.

Israeli officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity as they weren´t authorized to talk to the media, blamed Tehran for the attack. They offered no evidence to support their claim.

Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid tweeted late Friday that he spoke with British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab about the 'need to respond severely' to the attack, although he stopped short of directly blaming Iran.

'Iran is not just an Israeli problem, but an exporter of terrorism, destruction and instability that affects the whole world,' Lapid wrote. 'We can never remain silent in the face of Iranian terrorism, which also harms freedom of navigation.'

Other Israel-linked ships have been targeted in recent months as well amid a shadow war between the two nations, with Israeli officials blaming the Islamic Republic for the assaults.

Israel meanwhile has been suspected in a series of major attacks targeting Iran´s nuclear program. Also, Iran saw its largest warship recently sink under mysterious circumstances in the nearby Gulf of Oman.

Thursday´s attack comes amid heightened tensions over Iran´s tattered nuclear deal and as negotiations over restoring the accord have stalled in Vienna. The series of ship attacks suspected to have been carried out by Iran began a year after then-President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew America from the accord in 2018.

The attack on the Mercer Street also came the night after U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, speaking from Kuwait, warned Iran that talks in Vienna over the nuclear deal 'cannot go on indefinitely.'

This is the second time this month a ship tied to Ofer apparently has been targeted. In early July, the Liberian-flagged container ship CSAV Tyndall, once tied to Zodiac Maritime, suffered an unexplained explosion on board while in the northern Indian Ocean, according to the U.S. Maritime Administration.

At least four people have been killed, including an 82-year-old man and a married couple.

A volunteer firefighter who was taking drinking water to his colleagues was involved in a motorcycle crash and died in the fire.

More than 50 others have been taken to hospital.

A senior aide of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said "those responsible will have to account for the attacks against nature and forests".

Meanwhile, the mayor of Marmaris has warned that he couldn't rule out "sabotage" as being the cause of a fire at one resort.

Wildfires are common in Turkey's Mediterranean and Aegean regions during the dry summer months, although some have previously been blamed on arson or outlawed Kurdish militants.

Donald Trump ordered to hand over tax returns to Congress - BBC News

The US justice department has ordered the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to hand over former President Donald Trump's tax returns to Congress.

The move reverses a 2019 finding that the request from the House Ways and Means Committee was "disingenuous".

The decision appears to end a long legal battle over the records, and is seen as a sharp legal blow to Mr Trump.

Although not required by law, every US president since 1976 - except Mr Trump - has released their tax returns.

Mr Trump is yet to publicly comment on the latest developments, although he still has ways to try to fight the ruling in court.

Republicans on Capitol Hill denounced the decision, describing it as politically motivated.

When he was president, Mr Trump repeatedly said he was under audit by the IRS and so could not release his tax returns - although the IRS has said an audit would not stop the release of the information.

The House Ways and Means Committee has previously argued that it required the Republican former president's tax returns for an investigation into whether he complied with tax law.

The Trump-era justice department, however, refused to hand them over. It argued that the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives was seeking them for partisan political gain.

In an opinion released on Friday, the justice department's Office of Legal Counsel determined that the committee "has invoked sufficient reasons" for requesting the tax information.

"Treasury must furnish the information to the Committee," the opinion said.

Among those who praised the decision was House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, who said the American people "deserve to know the facts of his troubling conflicts and undermining of our security and democracy as president".

In February, Mr Trump was ordered by the US Supreme Court to hand over his tax returns and other financial records to prosecutors in New York.

The decision was a blow to Mr Trump, who had been in a legal battle to protect his records from a grand jury.

He has continuously denied any wrongdoing and has called the investigation into his tax affairs a "witch hunt".

Four killed as wildfires sweep Turkey, force evacuations - Al Jazeera English

The death toll from wildfires in Turkey has risen to four as thousands of firefighters battle blazes for a third day in a row after the evacuation of dozens of villages and some hotels.

About 70 wildfires have broken out across 17 provinces on the country’s Aegean and Mediterranean coasts this week, according to local officials, fanned by strong winds and scorching temperatures.

Turkey’s government announced that 57 of the fires had been contained or entirely put out by Friday morning.

But Forestry Minister Bekir Pakdemirli said fires were still raging in the provinces of Osmaniye, Kayseri, Kocaeli, Adana, Mersin and Kutahya.

Blazes were also still burning in the Mediterranean resort region of Antalya and the Aegean resort province of Mugla, he added.

“We were hoping to contain some of the fires as of this morning but while we say cautiously that they are improving, we still cannot say they are under control,” Pakdemirli said.

Villages and some hotels have been evacuated in areas popular with tourists and television footage has shown people fleeing across fields as they watched fires close in on their homes.

Pakdemirli said three planes, nine drones, 38 helicopters, 680 firefighting vehicles and 4,000 personnel were involved in the ongoing firefighting efforts.

Russia has sent three giant aircraft while neighbouring Greece, also battling wildfires, said it was “ready to help”.

Turkish officials have promised to bring to account anyone found responsible for starting the fires.

‘A rain of ash’

In Manavgat, a Mediterranean coast city that sits 75km (45 miles) east of Antalya, firefighters on the ground and in helicopters were fighting a blaze that killed three people.

Urbanisation Minister Murat Kurum said 27 neighbourhoods were evacuated due to the fires in the area. A hospital was also evacuated.

Local resident Gulen Dede Tekin, who arrived at a hotel in Manavgat on Thursday morning along with his family, described the unfolding scenes to the AFP news agency.

“In the evening, we realised how serious things were when they cut off the electricity and the ventilation at the hotel,” he said. “This morning, we woke up to a rain of ash.”

Some areas in Adana and Mersin were also evacuated after the fires began to spread around Manavgat on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, one person was found dead on Thursday in Mugla’s Marmaris area, 290km (180 miles) west of Manavgat.

The blaze was continuing in Marmaris but residential areas were not at risk, Pakdemirli said. Buildings in the area, including a hotel, were evacuated.

Two separate fires broke out near residential areas in the Aegean summer hotspots of Bodrum in Mugla and Didim in Aydin province.

Wildfires have also broken out elsewhere in the region, with more than 40 burning in Greece in the last 24 hours, fanned by winds and soaring temperatures, local authorities said.

On Tuesday, a blaze tore through a pine forest north of the capital, Athens, damaging more than a dozen homes before it was brought under control.

Greek authorities warned the public against unnecessary movement on Friday and said there was a high risk of wildfires during a “dangerous” heatwave that is expected to peak next week.

Fires also burned large swaths of pine forest in the mountainous north of Lebanon this week, killing at least one firefighter and forcing some residents to flee.

Two killed in suspected drone attack on tanker near Oman - Financial Times

A British maritime security guard and a Romanian crew member have been killed in a suspected drone attack on an oil tanker near Oman, in an escalation of the threat to vessels passing through one of the world’s most important trade routes.

The Mercer Street oil products tanker, which is linked to Israeli billionaire Eyal Ofer, was struck in the early hours of Friday morning in the northern Indian Ocean, said Zodiac Maritime, his UK-based company that manages the vessel.

The two deaths mark a significant escalation of the risks to vessels transiting a route that roughly a third of the world’s oil supplies pass near to every day. There have been a series of incidents in recent months that maritime security experts have blamed on both Iran and Israel targeting vessels linked to either country.

Ambrey, the world’s largest provider of maritime security guards, said in a statement that a member of its team had “tragically been killed in a security incident” aboard the ship, without elaborating on the circumstances behind the attack.

Three people familiar with the incident said they believed it was a drone attack, but emphasised they were still waiting on official confirmation of what had occurred. A US official told the Financial Times: “It [The vessel] appears to have been attacked by a one-way UAV explosive drone. That’s basically a UAV that is loaded up with explosives and flown into a target and it explodes on contact.” The US official said there were “lots of tell-tale signs” that it came from Iran. The official added that the ship had hours earlier reported an attempted attack as what appeared to be a drone hit the water 20 metres from the ship.

Zodiac Maritime said in a statement on Friday the Mercer Street tanker was now being shadowed by a US naval escort” but was sailing “under the control of her crew and under her own power at 14 knots to a safe location”.

The Mercer Street tanker had been regularly travelling between east Africa and the oil hub of Fujairah in the UAE in recent months, according to satellite tracking data.

The attack comes at a time of escalated tensions in the region as negotiations with world powers over a nuclear deal with Tehran are on hold.

A UK government spokesperson confirmed they were aware of the incident and said “UK military headquarters in the region are currently conducting investigations”.

In an earlier statement, Zodiac Maritime said the incident was “suspected piracy” but the UK Maritime Trade Operations, an information arm of the Royal Navy, and the Maritime Security Centre — Horn of Africa (MSC-HOA) both denied that.

Personnel on board a ship within five nautical miles of the Mercer Street at the time of the attack received a very-high frequency transmission from the tanker reporting that it was a drone, according to a person familiar with the matter.

MSC-HOA said the report of the attack came “after another report of a sighting of what seemed to be an unmanned aerial vehicle falling in flares into the water, but both incidents cannot be correlated at the moment”. It advised vessels to “exercise extreme caution” if travelling through the area.

Munro Anderson, founding partner of Dryad Global, a maritime security analysis firm, said that the incident was likely to be an unmanned aerial vehicle sent by Iran.

“Whilst a number of details remain unconfirmed, this latest attack has the hallmarks of the ongoing Israel-Iran ‘shadow war’ that has seen an exchange in attacks against vessels associated with each state,” he said in a report.
