Police appeal after three stabbed in Bournemouth during day of chaos at Britain's beaches - Sky News

Police are appealing for witnesses after three men were stabbed in Bournemouth during a day of violent brawls at beaches across Britain.

Three men were knifed in the face, chest and back after a fight broke out near Bournemouth pier yesterday evening, Dorset Police said.

They are all from London, in their 20s and were taken to hospital, where their conditions were not considered life-threatening, the force added. One has since been discharged.

Police are asking anyone who saw the stabbings or have any video footage to come forward.

Detective Inspector Gavin House, who is leading the investigation, said: "We are carrying out a full and thorough investigation to determine who was responsible for this incident.

"The public can expect to see an increased police presence near to the pier today as detectives continue their inquiries in the area.

"I understand there was a large number of people on the beach at the time and I would urge anyone who may have important information to assist my investigation to please get in touch."

It comes after a "major incident" was declared at the beach as a result of thousands of visitors flocking there on the hottest day of the year so far. The government warned it will close beaches if people fail to follow social distancing rules.

The prime minister condemned the scenes in Bournemouth, saying "people are taking too many liberties with the guidance".

During a visit to a London restaurant reopening next week, he said: "Let me be very clear about the scenes in Bournemouth.

"It's very important for people to understand if you look at what's happening elsewhere in the world where people have been coming out of lockdown. I'm afraid what you're also seeing is people mingling too much, not observing social distancing.

"You may think you're not going to get it and you're immortal and invincible and so on. And very likely that's true, particularly if you're a young person. But the bug you carry can kill elderly people particularly. It's still dangerous. The virus is still out there."

A further two men in their 20s were stabbed in a separate incident in Leysdown-on-sea, Kent after hundreds of people - "many of whom had travelled from outside the area" - gathered for an illegal beach rave, police said.

The victims are both from London and were taken to hospital with "injuries consistent with stab wounds" after officers were called at 11.55pm yesterday, the force added.

A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm and remains in custody.

Hours earlier, police were forced to break up crowds on the beach at Ogmore-by-sea, South Wales.

Two men in their 20s were arrested after a "large-scale disorder" took place, triggering a warning about the dangers of breaking social distancing rules from First Minister Mark Drakeford.

He tweeted: "We will not be able to continue easing restrictions if scenes like last night continue to happen.

"They threaten the health of people in Wales and undermine the sacrifices the majority of people have made during this ongoing crisis."

South Wales Police Detective Chief Inspector Tom Moore described the scenes as "totally unacceptable".

He said: "We believe that a large number of youths have travelled to the area from various areas of South Wales to become involved in serious, violent disorder.

"I am appealing to anyone who can assist our investigation to contact us so we can identify and take action against those involved."

Social media footage from Orcombe Point in Exmouth, Devon, showed a huge fight breaking out.

Police were called to a "number of fights" at around 7pm after further anti-social behaviour "during the course of the afternoon", when temperatures exceeded 30C (86F).

Devon and Cornwall officers had to disperse people after onlookers described the beach as looking like a "festival".

Beaches in North Tyneside were also plagued by violence yesterday, with police arresting a number of people after fights broke out near families sat enjoying the weather.

A video shared online showed a group of men fighting on the sand, while another was posted of people being led away in handcuffs later in the day.

Police were also called to a "fight involving a large number of teenagers" after hundreds gathered at Hove Lawns in East Sussex.
