Vietnam evacuating 80,000 people from city after three positive coronavirus tests - Sky News

Vietnam is evacuating 80,000 people, mostly local tourists, from the central city of Danang after three residents tested positive for coronavirus, the government has said.

The South East Asian country was back on high alert after it confirmed its first community infections since April this weekend, with three cases in the tourism hotspot of Danang reported on Sunday.

The evacuation will take at least four days with domestic airlines operating approximately 100 flights daily from Danang
to 11 Vietnamese cities, the government said in a statement.

Vietnam has imposed strict quarantine measures and carried out an aggressive and widespread testing programme during the pandemic.

The three new cases on Sunday include a 17-year-old boy in the central province of Quang Ngai and a 71-year-old woman in Danang city, the government said in a statement.

A 61-year-old man from Danang is also reported to have tested positive for the virus.

The evacuation of the city is part of the country's ongoing efforts to contain the COVID-19 outbreak.

Vietnam had gone 99 days in a row without community transmission by Friday before a 57-year old man was confirmed to have the virus on Saturday.

Vietnam's Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc demanded drastic contact-tracing and large-scale testing in Danang, one of the major tourist destinations in Vietnam, on the same day.

He also ordered prompt investigation and strict punishment of illegal entrants into the country, especially in Danang and Quang Nam Province.

The Danang Municipal People's Committee put social distancing rules on Saturday which were applicable from 1pm the same day.

All people were requested to wash their hands with soap or sanitiser, to wear face masks in public places, and to keep a distance of at least one metre from each other.

The Ministry of Health decided to send three teams to help Danang curb the outbreak.

The three cases on Sunday brought the country's total to 420, according to the Johns Hopkins University which is tracking the outbreak.

Vietnam has no recorded deaths from the virus.
