The US President confirmed in a tweet that he intended to give a speech to service members stationed abroad. He wrote: “Going now to make a short speech to service members from all over the world.
“It is a celebration of Christmas. Video Conference – Fake News not invited!”
Shortly after Mr Trump tweeted, journalists reporting on his Mar-a-Lago Christmas holidays were given a “lid”, a term used by the White House to convey that no questions will be answered for the rest of the day.
The controversial tweet was met with criticism from other Twitter users with some calling for him to leave office.
One Twitter user said: “Trump’s personality is truly pathological.
“He can’t even make a simple announcement about a Christmas speech without including an insult.
“How good it will be to have some CLASS back in the White House on January 20.”
Another user added: “I speak for every true American citizen when I say that the 45th president definitely doesn’t deserve a 2nd term and that he should leave office immediately so Mr Biden can get to work.”
A third commenter wrote: “Raise your hand if you think that Donald Trump needs to be removed from office immediately.”
On Monday, Rob Flaherty, Mr Biden’s digital director spoke out about Twitter’s decision in a tweet.
He wrote: “In 2016, the Trump administration absorbed all of President Obama's Twitter followers on @POTUS and @WhiteHouse - at Team 44's urging.
“In 2020, Twitter has informed us that as of right now the Biden administration will have to start from zero.”
Twitter’s decision will apply those who follow the US government-led profiles such as @POTUS and @FLOTUS, the accounts of the President and First Lady.
The platform clarified it will notify those who follow the government-led accounts that they are being archived.
It also confirmed it will show followers to Mr Biden’s new presidential accounts.
According to the BBC, Mr Trump tweeted more than 50,000 times during his time at the White House.
Since November, Mr Trump lost 369,849 followers from his account according to Factbase.
During the same period, Mr Biden reportedly gained 2,671,790 followers on his personal account.
