
After lying dormant for more than 900 years a volcano 25 miles from Reykjavik has sprung into action, spewing red lava and clouds of blue gas.
The Fagradalsfjall volcano on the Reykjanes peninsula is just a few kilometers from Keflavik International Airport, as well as the small fishing port of Grindavik and the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, a popular tourist destination.
From a deep cleave in the rock known as the eruption fissure, estimated to be about 700 metres long, lava is oozing into the valley below Mount Fagradalsfjall. The volcanic activity, which began yesterday evening, has since “somewhat decreased”, the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) said this morning in a tweet picturing glowing red lava streams and a plume of white smoke at the mountain
