Taliban besiege Afghan cities as government faces weapons crisis - The Times

Taliban fighters are surrounding at least ten of Afghanistan’s cities as local militias raised by the government say they have already been “abandoned” and are running out of weapons and ammunition.

A string of provincial capitals are encircled or under siege as the insurgents press on with their offensive and Afghan government forces fall back. Fighting was reported from the southern cities of Kandahar, Ghazni and Lashkah Gar to Pul-e-Khumri and Taluqan in the north.

Fighting has raged for days in the western city of Qala-i-Naw, which was overrun by the Taliban last week before a counterattack by government special forces.

The surge of violence comes as the US completes its withdrawal from Afghanistan after 20 years of war. Only 600 American troops are left
