Ghislaine Maxwell arrest – Pleas to not let her kill herself in prison like Jeffrey Epstein - The Sun

CALLS are growing to keep Ghislaine Maxwell on prison suicide watch so she does not try to kill herself in jail like her ex-boyfriend Jeffrey Epstein.

The British socialite, 58, was arrested yesterday by the FBI and charged with grooming and abusing the paedophile financier's teenage victims.

Maxwell is set to appear in court next week in Manhattan where she faces charges of ensnaring the girls between 1994 through 1997.

She could face a potential life sentence, even if she pleads guilty, according to Mark Allenbaugh, the co-founder of Sentencing Stats, LLC.

Ever since Epstein was arrested for sex trafficking last year, she had kept below the radar.

Then Epstein apparently killed himself in August last year while awaiting trial, which at the time effectively ended the case which would have involved his rich and powerful pals.

But now victims, who have waited decades for justice, hope they now have the opportunity to hold Maxwell to account for her alleged role in grooming and abusing dozens of girls and women.

Yet many fear justice could be thwarted if she kills herself in her cell like her co-accused and former lover.

Actor Steven Pasquale, was one them, tweeting: “Ghislaine Maxwell has been arrested.

"Now let’s keep her a** alive because she knows EVERYTHING."

Corey Feldman, who claims he was abused as a child actor in Hollywood, tweeted: "Better do a sworn video testimonial on her fast before she shows up dead too!

"Let's do our best to keep her alive eh?!"

Meanwhile Carol Wick, a campaigner against violence against women, echoed this sentiment, saying: "It's about time.  Now keep her alive long enough to testify."

After her arrest in Bradford, New Hampshire yesterday, Maxwell appeared in a Manhattan court shortly after 3.30 pm via video conference along with her attorney.

She is charged with four counts related to procuring and transporting minors for illegal sex acts and two counts of perjury.

But she has yet to be granted bail, which is opposed by the US government who fear she is "an extreme flight risk" given her wealth.

District Judge Alison J. Nathan Nathan told Maxwell she would be temporarily detained and "transported to the charging district" – the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York (SDNY) – where hearings would begin accordingly.

This means she is likely to be held in the same remand prison Epstein apparently killed himself in.

At a press briefing, acting Manhattan U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss said: "Maxwell was among Epstein’s closest associates and helped him exploit girls who were as young as 14 years old.

"She played a critical role in helping Epstein to identify, befriend and groom minor victims for abuse.

"In some cases, Maxwell participated in the abuse herself."

Previous to her arrest, Maxwell strongly denied any wrongdoing and until today the accusations hadn't resulted in criminal charges.

The indictment accuses Maxwell of luring the girls beginning in 1994 through 1997 by asking them about their lives, schools and families and taking them shopping or to movies.

'VICTIMS WERE GROOMED BY MAXWELL'

It is alleged Maxwell was well aware of Epstein lusted after girls and sexually abused them.

His alleged abuse included touching and placing sex toys in his victims' genitals and having them touch his privates while he masturbated.

Maxwell also encouraged the young girls to massage Epstein, and in some cases, the victims were partially or fully nude during these sessions, according to the indictment.

Strauss said the abuse took place at Epstein's luxury homes in London, New York and Palm Beach, Florida.

CHARGES AGAINST GHISLAINE MAXWELL

Ghislaine Maxwell is charged with the following:

  • Count one: Conspiracy to entice minors to travel to engage in illegal sex acts
  • Count two: Enticement of a minor to travel to engage in illegal sex acts
  • Count three: Conspiracy to transport minors with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity
  • Count four: Transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity
  • Count five and six: Perjury - the offence of willfully telling an untruth or making a misrepresentation under oath.

The circumstances of Maxwell's ex-partner in prison are now under investigation by the Justice Department.

Central to the concerns over Epstein's death is that two prison guards on duty the night Epstein died are accused of falsifying records.

It is alleged they lied about making required checks on the financier.

The convicted sex fiend, who faced dying in prison because of the fresh claims made against him, had been left alone in his cell for eight hours before he was found dead.

Those guards have pleaded not guilty.

Following Epstein’s death autopsy photos later revealed he had a fracture to his neck.

But, after weighing the evidence, New York's medical examiner officially ruled his death a suicide.

CONSPIRACY THEORIES OVER EPSTEIN'S PRISON DEATH

But the suicide ruling hasn't stopped theories the sex fiend was murdered.

Notably, given that he was New York City’s former chief medical examiner, Dr Michael Baden disputed the verdict of his successor Barbara Sampson who had concluded Epstein did not kill himself and was most likely strangled.

But Baden insisted on Fox News: "I think that the evidence points toward homicide rather than suicide."

He was hired by Epstein’s family — who were appalled about allegation but suspicious about his sudden death — to observe his autopsy

Epstein's unexpected death at the time appeared to end the possibility of a trial that would have involved his famous and wealthy friends.

It also sparked widespread anger that the vile sex fiend had cheated justice — and that no-one would be held accountable for his dehumanising defilement of teenage girls, groomed to obey his every command.

But now, after the FBI closed in on her New Hampshire bolthole, Maxwell is compelled to face claims about her role in her ex-boyfriend's repugnant sex abuse regime.

Before the lid on Epstein's sordid sex trafficking scandal blew open and nauseated the world, Ghislaine was known to the world as the youngest child of disgraced media tycoon and British publisher Robert Maxwell.

He died in 1991 after mysteriously falling off the superyacht, Lady Ghislaine — named by her fraudster dad in her honour.

Following this she moved to New York. She began dating Epstein a year later.

The pair were said to have remained close for decades after their breakup.

Coronavirus: Texas governor mandates wearing of face masks - BBC News

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has ordered face coverings to be worn in public as coronavirus cases rocket in the state.

The directive applies to counties with 20 or more Covid-19 cases, which covers most of Texas' 254 counties.

Texas hit a record of more than 8,000 virus cases in a day on Wednesday, up from about 2,400 two weeks ago.

Americans are about to mark the Fourth of July weekend, with some beaches coast to coast shut and fireworks displays cancelled.

There have now been 2.7 million recorded infections nationwide and more than 128,000 deaths since the pandemic began.

What did the Texas governor say?

"Wearing a face covering will help us to keep Texas open for business," Mr Abbott said, announcing the order.

After an initial warning, those who refuse will face a fine up to $250.

"Let me be clear: no-one can ever be put in jail for violating this safe practice," the governor said.

"Covid-19 is not going away," Mr Abbott, a Republican, said on Thursday. "In fact it's getting worse."

Warning that some hospital intensive care units were almost full, he added: "We are now at a point where the virus is spreading so fast there is little margin for error."

The order includes a series of "common sense" exemptions, including children who are 10 years old or younger, those who have a medical condition that prevents them from wearing a mask, people who are eating or drinking and those who are exercising outdoors.

Texas is now one of 21 states that require mask wearing in public, according to Masks4All, a volunteer advocacy group.

But the move by Mr Abbott was described as "far too little, far too late" by the Texas Democratic Party.

How did we get here?

Texas led the charge in US states loosening lockdown measures that were meant to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Mr Abbott allowed his initial stay-at-home order to expire on 30 April, with almost all businesses operating to at least 50% capacity by early June.

But as the virus surged, Mr Abbott began to walk back his state's reopening last week, ordering all bars shut and cutting restaurant capacity from 75-50%.

Mr Abbott had initially resisted a state-wide order on masks, going so far as to ban local governments from requiring facial coverings.

What Texans think

Rachel Moon, 23, a sales rep in Houston

When we reopened, my friends all went to the Houston bars, and they have all tested positive now.

I'm a Republican, but I don't think Trump should be enforcing rules if he isn't following them.

Genesis Valbuena, 26, project manager, Austin

The reopening should have been done less quickly.

I think initially the decision by local and state government, who closed down everything quickly, was made out of fear instead of data.

Read more about life inside the US outbreaks.

What's the national picture?

Infection rates are rising in 40 of the 50 states, reports the Associated Press, and not all the increases can be explained by expanded testing.

Recent reopenings fuelled job creation at a record pace of 4.8 million in June, according to the US Department of Labour, but employment remains 14.7 million jobs below pre-pandemic levels.

Also on Thursday:

  • For the first time, Florida reported over 10,000 new daily cases - more than any European country at the height of their outbreaks, according to Reuters news agency
  • Alabama Governor Kay Ivey extended that state's public health emergency for another 90 days - making it set to expire on 9 September.
  • Chicago city officials announced that travellers to the Illinois city from 15 of the worst-hit states will have to quarantine for two weeks upon arrival or face possible fines

Woman claims she was raped by Jeffrey Epstein when she was 17 after a nude photoshoot - Daily Mail

Woman claims she was raped by Jeffrey Epstein at his New York mansion at 17 while Prince Andrew was in another room and the billionaire pedophile said: 'I know you love it'

  • Caroline Kaufman, 26, accused Epstein of raping her during a 'modeling interview' in December 2010 in a federal lawsuit filed Thursday
  • Kaufman claims she was introduced to Prince Andrew during her visit to Epstein's Manhattan mansion
  • The lawsuit says the rape took place after Kaufman was photographed naked by 'an older woman' she now believes to be Ghislaine Maxwell
  • Maxwell, Epstein's alleged madam, was arrested Thursday morning in New Hampshire on suspicion of child sex trafficking
  • Prince Andrew was previously accused of having sex with one of Epstein's other victims, Virginia Roberts Giuffre
  • The Duke unequivocally denied having engaged in sex with minors and claims he had no knowledge of Epstein's criminal behavior
  • Kaufman's suit does not accuse Prince Andrew of any wrongdoing or of being aware of the alleged assault

Jeffrey Epstein allegedly raped a 17-year-old girl in his Manhattan mansion while Prince Andrew was there, DailyMail.com can reveal.

Caroline Kaufman, now 26, accused Epstein of raping her during a 'modeling interview' in December 2010 in a federal lawsuit filed Thursday in the Southern District of New York.

The lawsuit claims the assault took place after Kaufman was photographed naked by 'an older woman' she now believes to be Ghislaine Maxwell – Epstein's alleged madam who was arrested Thursday morning in New Hampshire on suspicion of child sex trafficking.

Maxwell is accused of enticing underage girls to travel for sex, actually having sex with them and Epstein and later lying about it under oath in depositions when she was being sued by Virginia Giuffre Roberts, one of Epstein's accusers who says she had sex with Prince Andrew when she was 17.

Prince Andrew has unequivocally denied having engaged in sex with minors and claims he had no knowledge of Epstein's criminal behavior.

Representatives for the Duke of York did not immediately return DailyMail.com's request for comment about Kaufman's lawsuit.

The suit does not accuse Prince Andrew of any wrongdoing or of being aware of the alleged assault, merely claiming that Kaufman met him while at Epstein's mansion.

Kaufman's suit alleges that she was 'recruited' by one of Epstein's 'close associates', Susan Hamblin, at a horse show in Lake Placid, New York, when she was 16 in early 2010.

'Hamblin approached Kaufman to ask her if she was a "model,"' the documents said.

'Hamblin then told Kaufman that her "boss" could help Kaufman get into the modeling industry. During these conversations, Kaufman made clear to Hamblin that she was only 16 years old at that time.'

Months later Kaufman agreed to visit Epstein's $56million home on the Upper East Side in around December, after repeated calls from Hamblin.

While at the mansion she was introduced to several people including Prince Andrew - who was photographed walking around Central Park with Epstein around the same time - according to the suit.

Kaufman claims that during the visit she was taken into a private area and told to undress for an older woman who took photos of her naked. She believes that woman was Maxwell.

After the photoshoot, 'Maxwell advised Kaufman that her "boss" wanted to meet her,' the legal filing states.

'Kaufman then put a bikini back on and was escorted by Maxwell into a massage room. Epstein was nude on the massage table as she entered the room.

'After Maxwell left the room, Epstein got up off the table, grabbed Kaufman and threw her against the massage table.

'During this encounter, Epstein vaginally and anally raped Kaufman, while saying: ''I know you love it.''

'Kaufman was screaming for help during this encounter, but no one came to her rescue.'

'Upon finishing, Epstein left the room ... and [Kaufman] started hyperventilating. She then exited the massage room.'

After the encounter Hamblin allegedly gave Kaufman $500 in cash and told her: 'Mr. Epstein is a very powerful man and he knows presidents. If you say anything he will kill you and your family.'

Kaufman suffered 'extreme distress, humiliation, fear, psychological trauma, loss of dignity and self esteem and invasion of her privacy' from the assault, the suit states.

She explained the trauma in gut-wrenching detail in an interview with The Sun, revealing how her arms are covered in scars from the times she attempted to harm herself.

'I've had to live in darkness. I've been severely suicidal,' she said.  'I was very social and outgoing and then afterwards just very antisocial. I didn't want to talk to anybody.'

'I had dreams of being a supermodel. And also I had dreams of working with the horses and everything,' she continued.

'I turned 18 and I became a stripper. I was working at a club all the time and not thinking I had any meaning left.

'I didn't think anyone wanted me for anything besides sex.'

Kaufman (pictured) recounted the alleged assault in an interview with The Sun, describing how she became suicidal and abandoned her modeling dreams to become a stripper because: 'I didn't think anyone wanted me for anything besides sex'

Kaufman's suit names Epstein's estate and its executors, Darren Indyke and Richard Kahn, as defendants. It accuses Epstein of using women to 'recruit' and 'manipulate' his young female victims, offering modeling opportunities or money.

In her legal filing, Kaufman is demanding damages and legal costs from Epstein's estate, along with a jury trial of the civil case.

'Epstein and his co-conspirators enticed Kaufman to cross state lines, with the full knowledge and intent to sexually exploit Kaufman,' the filing states.

'Epstein intentionally committed sexual misconduct and rape in the first degree by sexually assaulting Plaintiff when she was 17 years old.

'As described above, Epstein, vaginally and anally forced himself upon the intimate parts of Plaintiff's body in an offensive and sexual manner without her consent.

'Epstein's encounters with girls and young women, as well as his trafficking scheme, involved recruiting young females by making false promises and using his wealth, power and threats to intimidate the females into submission to his demands.

'This same pattern was repeated numerous times with numerous young women.'

The documents claimed Epstein and his alleged conspirators then used 'financial power, promises, and threats' to ensure their victims 'remained compliant with their demands'.

It says the financier 'hired staff to maintain and keep secret this network of sexual abuse for years' and said that his alleged crimes were perpetrated in New York, Florida, New Mexico, the United States Virgin Islands, and Paris'.

Kaufman is being represented by Spencer Kuvin, an attorney who has represented several of Epstein's other victims.

'On behalf of Caroline we are filing this claim against the estate so that she can receive some type of recovery for what Mr Epstein did to her,' Kuvin told The Sun.

'We're also going to be sending her claim to the fund and allowing the fund administrator to evaluate her claim as well. And hopefully she will receive some type of justice at the end of all this.'

He added: 'The goal is for all of these women to come forward to be heard and receive a fair and compassionate hearing of their story and just compensation.'

Kuvin also took aim at Prince Andrew, who is accused of refusing to cooperate with US prosecutors investigating Epstein's co-conspirators.

'At the end of the day Prince Andrew is yet to step forward with an answer for why he attended events at both Mr Epstein's mansion in New York, Palm Beach and the Virgin Islands,' the attorney said.

'He is yet to explain what he was doing there, why he was there, who he was with and the circumstances under why he was attending these events.

'And we know for certain he was at Mr Epstein's mansion even after Mr Epstein had been convicted in Florida of soliciting under age girls for prostitution because there was photographs of him standing in the doorway. Those photos were taken after the conviction.

'He has failed to answer for his actions.'

Prince Andrew claims he has offered three times to be a witness in the case, but US prosecutors say he has declined their request to schedule an interview.

A source close to the Duke's working group told DailyMail.com: 'The Duke's team remains bewildered given that we have twice communicated with the DOJ in the last month and to-date, we have had no response.'

Acting Manhattan US Attorney Audrey Strauss urged Prince Andrew to make himself available for an interview during a Thursday press conference announcing the charges against Maxwell.

'We would welcome Prince Andrew coming in to talk to us, we would like to have the benefit of his statement,' Strauss said.

Virginia Roberts Giuffre claims that Maxwell arranged for her to have sex with Prince Andrew at her London townhouse in 2001. The Duke has unequivocally denied Giuffre's allegations, despite a photo )above) appearing to show the three of them together that year

Virginia Roberts Giuffre claims that Maxwell arranged for her to have sex with Prince Andrew at her London townhouse in 2001. The Duke has unequivocally denied Giuffre's allegations, despite a photo )above) appearing to show the three of them together that year

Prince Andrew has previously said he became friends with Epstein in 1999 after being introduced to him through Maxwell.

Their friendship appeared to continue even after Epstein was convicted of child sex crimes in 2008 and served 13 months as part of a 'sweetheart deal' with prosecutors - as the Duke of York stayed at the financier's Manhattan home in December 2010.

Prince Andrew's relationship with Epstein was thrust into the spotlight after Epstein was hit with a slew of sex trafficking charges last July and died by apparent suicide in his New York City jail cell in August.

In a car-crash interview with BBC last November, Prince Andrew stated that he went to Epstein's home in 2010 to cut his ties with the millionaire - but said he did not regret their friendship.

During the same interview the Duke firmly rejected allegations brought by Virginia Roberts Giuffre, one of many women allegedly sex trafficked by Epstein as a teenager.

Giuffre claims that Maxwell arranged for her to have sex with Prince Andrew at her London townhouse when she was 17 in 2001.

The Duke has denied ever having met Giuffre - despite a photo which appeared to show the pair at a party that year.

'At no stage during the limited time I spent with [Epstein] did I see, witness or suspect any behavior of the sort that subsequently led to his arrest and conviction,' he said.

The Palace denied Giuffre's allegations in a statement last fall, which read: 'Any suggestion of impropriety with underage minors is categorically untrue.

'It is emphatically denied that the Duke of York had any form of sexual contact with Virginia Roberts. Any claim to the contrary is false and without foundation.'

Maxwell has also denied any involvement in Epstein's sex crimes.

China crackdown: Boris concocts perfect revenge for China's threat over Hong Kong citizens - Express.co.uk

It comes after Beijing’s decision to pass a controversial national security law onto Hong Kong sent shockwaves around the world due to fears it could erode the unique freedoms that the region has within China.

Johnson had warned that the UK would relax its immigration laws pertaining to certain Hong Kong residents if the law were passed, which would place potentially millions on a route of citizenship.

He said that Britain would “have no choice but to uphold our profound ties of history and friendship with the people of Hong Kong” in retaliation to China’s move.

On Wednesday this week, the government confirmed that it had set this plan in motion, which will allow Hong Kong residents with a British National Overseas passport to come to the UK for five years before applying for settled status or citizenship.

But the move prompted warnings from China that the UK would face “consequences” for doing so.

China’s foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said at a Beijing press briefing that China condemned the UK’s offer of residency to Hong Kong residents and said China “reserves the right to take further measures”, the Guardian reports.

Boris Johnson thinking

In an interview with the Evening Standard yesterday, the prime minister said that, given these tensions between the UK and China, the government would have to carefully consider what its next step would be given its 5G network plans.

He told the paper: “On Huawei, I’m not against investment in this country.
“But I don’t want to see our critical national infrastructure at risk of being in any way controlled by potentially hostile state vendors.

“So, we have to think very carefully about how to proceed now”.

Even before the Hong Kong situation arose, the US has set about pressuring the UK into reconsidering its relationship with Huawei for much of this year.

Only last week, the US Sta te Department issued a warning to the UK after South Cambridgeshire council permitted Huawei to build a £1 billion chip manufacturing facility there.

In a statement shared with US broadcaster CNBC, the Department said: “We urge all countries, particularly allies and partners like the United Kingdom, to carefully assess the long-term impact of allowing untrusted companies like Huawei access to sensitive information”.

The US has taken an increasingly tough stance on Huawei, this week declaring it, alongside competing Chinese telecoms company ZTE, to be a national security threat.

As a result, it’s claimed that the UK government is reviewing how the US’ announcement – and the sanctions that came with it – might affect the UK’s relationship with the company.

Digital Secretary Oliver Dowden said that the US’ move would be “likely to have an impact of the viability of Huawei as a provider for the 5G network.”

In January this year, the UK government announced it had approved the use of Huawei technology in the country’s 5G data network – though it’s understood that Huawei technology would not be involved in any nuclear or military sites.

In lighter moments in yesterday’s interview, the Prime Minister told the Evening Standard that he was looking forward to this Saturday, when the UK will enter its next stage of lockdown easing.

June 4 will see the reopening of pubs, restaurants, hairdressers and a number of cultural establishments.

Johnson admitted he had plans to take fiancée Carrie Symonds on a night out – though he didn’t reveal where – and said he was also planning a trip to the pub.
