NHS forced to cancel 2 million operations because of coronavirus - The Times

It will take “many years” for the NHS to get back to a good position after more than two million operations were cancelled to deal with the coronavirus pandemic, the president of the Royal College of Surgeons said yesterday.

Derek Alderson told the BBC that Nightingale hospitals and private hospitals would have a role to play in dealing with the backlog.

His comments came as the doctor heading the capital’s Nightingale hospital said that London would need to double its 799 intensive care beds permanently, both to be ready for future pandemics and to carry out the operations that had been cancelled because of a lack of intensive care unit (ICU) beds for patients during the present pandemic.
