Surfers fought off a 10 foot great white shark as they battled in vain to save a 60-year-old man it had attacked.
Rob Pedretti, a tradesman from Queensland, suffered what was described as a catastrophic bite to his left leg. He died on the South Kingscliff beach, about 70 miles south of Brisbane, despite the rescue efforts of two other surfers who confronted the 10ft shark to bring him ashore.
The shark circled the rescuers, one of whom was a friend of the victim, and rammed one of their surf boards.
