Joe Biden faced bafflement and frustration from his fellow Democrats yesterday after he selected a retired four-star general to be his defence chief, ignoring the tradition of civilian control over the American military.
The president-elect’s choice of Lloyd Austin, 67, a former commander of American forces in Iraq, followed criticism that he had selected only one black cabinet member so far. General Austin, if confirmed, would be the first African-American defence secretary.
