President Lukashenko of Belarus has threatened to flood western Europe with migrants and drugs if new sanctions are imposed on his regime over the forced landing of a Ryanair flight.
European Union foreign ministers began talks today in Lisbon on economic sanctions against Belarus that could target its most important industries and its financial sector. Lukashenko, 66, had warned Europe: “We stopped drugs and migrants. Now you will eat them and catch them yourselves.”
Belarus shares a border with Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland — all EU states — as well as Ukraine.
“This is an unpredictable regime from which you can expect anything, and you have to be prepared for anything,” Ingrida Simonyte, the Lithuanian prime minister, said. She described the threat to her country
