Satellite images appear to show mock-up US warships in China desert - BBC News

China appears to have built full-scale mock-ups of US warships in a desert in the country's north-western Xinjiang region, satellite images show.

One of the images, captured by US space technology company Maxar, shows a structure shaped like a military aircraft carrier placed on rail tracks.

USNI News, a site specialising in the US Navy, said the structures appeared to be targets built by the military.

Beijing has been developing and testing anti-ship ballistic missiles for years.

The US has warned that in recent months China has been rapidly expanding its military, including its nuclear capabilities, as tension builds in the South China Sea.

On Sunday, USNI News said the structures photographed in the Taklamakan Desert appeared to include flat outlines of US military vessels without weapons or other details.

The site reported that the building of such structures "shows that China continues to focus on anti-carrier capabilities, with an emphasis on US Navy warships".

Earlier this year, China was suspected of carrying out a nuclear-capable hypersonic missile test - missiles that can fly in the upper atmosphere at more than five times the speed of sound - which prompted concern in Washington.

Beijing later denied the reports and said it had been a routine spacecraft check.

The US Navy regularly carries out what it describes as routine missions with military ships in the South China Sea, which is one of the most disputed regions in the world. China claims most of the region, but surrounding countries and the US disagree.

The area is part of a major shipping route used to transport more than $3 trillion (£2.2 trillion) worth of trade annually.

The Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam have all been disputing China's claim to almost all of the Sea for decades, but tension has steadily increased in recent years.

The US has backed many of these countries in this territorial dispute.

Princess Charlene reunited with her family in Monaco - The Times

Princess Charlene of Monaco was reunited with her husband and two children today when she returned to the principality after an eight-month absence that fed speculation about the state of their ten-year marriage.

The former South African Olympic swimmer, 43, was greeted by Prince Albert and their six-year-old twins, Jacques and Gabriella, at Nice airport when she arrived on an overnight flight from Durban on board the Monegasque ruler’s jet. Wearing a mask in the country’s red and white colours, she held her husband by the shoulder.

“It’s obvious that they missed their mother. I missed her too,” the prince told reporters before the brief helicopter flight to their home. She arrived with a dog named Khan, which she had received as a gift after

A search for a man killed by a shark off Australia's west coast has been called off.

Paul Millachip, 57, who was originally from the UK, was attacked while swimming at Port Beach near Perth on Saturday.

His wife, who did not wish to be named, described the father-of-two as "a wonderful man" who loved exercise.

Speaking to Australian broadcasters, she paid tribute to the teenagers who helped raise the alarm.

"I also just wanted to say thank you to all of our friends here in Perth for all the support and love that you've shown us," she added.

The couple are believed to have settled in Perth years ago; both their families are currently overseas.

Mr Millachip was a regular at the beach and a pair of goggles believed to belong to him have now been recovered.

"Rest in peace, Paul. He died (doing) what he enjoyed doing the most, which was exercising," his wife said.

She thanked eyewitnesses and praised the police and emergency services.

"It came out of the blue. But it did happen, you just have to deal with it," she added.

Acting inspector Troy Douglas said: "Enquiries will continue based on anything that is washed up or anything that's found in the future, but at this point the marine search is suspended."

British man Paul Millachip killed by shark at Australian beach as family watch - The Times

The Perth beach where a British swimmer was killed by a great white shark on Saturday was not patrolled by lifesavers at the time, while the city’s shark spotter helicopter was scouring beaches 50 miles away.

Paul Millachip, 57, a father of two, was in the sea off Port Beach in North Fremantle, Western Australia, when he was attacked by a shark that witnesses said was about 15ft long.

Roger Cook, Western Australia’s deputy premier, said today that the location of surf lifesaver patrols would be reviewed.

Beaches in the area were immediately closed for the weekend after the attack but reopened to the public today.

Port Beach was unpatrolled on the day of the attack while Leighton Beach, less than a mile north, had

Police officers in southern France were attacked by a knifeman this morning in a suspected terror attack.

Three men narrowly avoided serious injury while sitting in a police car in the city of Cannes.

According to a French TV station citing a police source, the attacker opened the door of a vehicle parked outside a station.

The officer at the wheel was stabbed with a knife and a second officer narrowly avoided being injured.

A third officer also in the car shot and ‘neutralised’, the knifeman, who had previously threatened staff outside the main Police Commissariat in the town ‘in the name of the Prophet’.

They added: ‘He pulled open a car door and started stabbing.

‘It was only thanks to officers wearing bullet proof vests that none of them were injured.

‘The driver of the car tried to pull away, while another on the back seat of the car opened fire, and the man was severely wounded.

‘He had been shouting religious slogans referring to the Prophet throughout the attack. The knifeman is now in a critical condition in a hospital in Cannes.’

David Lisnard, the mayor of Cannes, said: ‘One of the officers responded with his gun.

‘There are no deaths and the circumstances of the attack are being clarified.’

Both officials confirmed that specialist anti-terrorism magistrates were now leading the enquiry.

The incident was confirmed by French interior minister Gerald Darmanin this morning.

He tweeted: ‘I am going to the scene immediately this morning and I offer my support to the national police and to the city of Cannes.’

In a separate, unrelated incident in Paris, fireworks were launched at a police station by a large gang.

According to a senior police official, ‘50 to 60 thugs’ attacked the station with ‘mortars’.

Footage shared by police commissaire Matthieu Valet was accompanied with a message saying ‘barricades, ambushes: they do everything to bring down [the police]’.

Terrorism, violent crime and security have become a major theme in the run up to the 2022 French president election.

Emmanuel Macron will seek a second term in April but is facing a strong challenge from right wing candidates.

Australia: Search called off for swimmer attacked by shark at Port Beach - Sky News

Police in Western Australia have called off a search for a swimmer attacked by a shark.

Paul Millachip, 57, was swimming at Port Beach near Fremantle on Saturday morning when he was attacked by what appeared to be a four-and-a-half-metre (15-foot) great white shark.

The search was called off on Sunday afternoon, local time, with searchers saying that only a pair of googles had been found and these had been swabbed for testing.

In comments reported by the Australian Broadcasting Corp, Mr Millachip's wife, who asked not to be named, said he had been a "lovely man and a great father".

Thanking the agencies involved in the search, she said: "We've been through in quite a lot of detail what they've been doing and how the search has panned out, and they've been extremely thorough and extremely professional, and we're really, really grateful for that."

She also thanked a number of teenagers who were in a dinghy nearby when her husband, a father of two, was attacked.

The teenagers had witnessed the attack, called emergency services, and urged other swimmers to get out of the water.

More on Australia

Mrs Millachip said: "A special mention to those young lads in the boat for what they did in what must have been an absolutely terrifying experience for them, so my heart goes out to them and I thank them for what they did.

"Thank goodness no one else was injured. They could potentially have saved other lives."

The attack happened on the anniversary of another shark attack that claimed the life of local swimmer Ken Crew off Cottesloe Beach in 2000.

There have been 17 shark attacks in Australia this year, two of them fatal, according to the Taronga Conservation Society, an Australian government agency in charge of several zoological parks.

Compared with other countries, Australia has one of the highest numbers of unprovoked shark encounters with humans, ranking second behind the US in 2019, the University of Florida's International Shark Attack File shows.
