The Perth beach where a British swimmer was killed by a great white shark on Saturday was not patrolled by lifesavers at the time, while the city’s shark spotter helicopter was scouring beaches 50 miles away.
Paul Millachip, 57, a father of two, was in the sea off Port Beach in North Fremantle, Western Australia, when he was attacked by a shark that witnesses said was about 15ft long.
Roger Cook, Western Australia’s deputy premier, said today that the location of surf lifesaver patrols would be reviewed.
Beaches in the area were immediately closed for the weekend after the attack but reopened to the public today.
