Yakuza mob boss Satoru Nomura first to be given death sentence - The Times

The godfather of Japan’s most notorious yakuza clan was sentenced to death yesterday in the first case of capital punishment being meted out to a mob boss in the country.

The unprecedented sentence for murder and three assaults was also controversial because Satoru Nomura, 74, leader of the Kudo-kai in Kita-Kyushu, Fukuoka, did not directly carry them out. The crimes were committed by members of his gang, which prosecutors argued must have been on Nomura’s orders, although they had no proof of his direct involvement.

The gang members were all previously convicted and given custodial sentences.

In Japan, the death sentence by hanging is usually only handed down for multiple murders and cases involving rape and murder, or robbery and murder.
