A police officer has died from injuries suffered when supporters of Donald Trump stormed Congress, bringing the number of lives lost in the riot to five.
Brian Sicknick was hurt "while physically engaging with protesters", according to police.
He later collapsed and was taken to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
An investigation has been launched into the death of the officer, who joined the US Capitol Police (USCP) in 2008.
The force said in a statement: "The entire USCP Department expresses its deepest sympathies to Officer Sicknick's family and friends on their loss, and mourns the loss of a friend and colleague."
Early on Friday morning, a motorcade of police vehicles lined up in front of the Capitol building in Washington DC to honour Officer Sicknick, before driving past the Washington Monument.
Democratic leaders of the House Appropriations Committee said the "tragic loss" of the officer "should remind all of us of the bravery of the law enforcement officers who protected us, our colleagues, congressional staff, the press corps and other essential workers'' during the takeover of the Capitol building by the pro-Trump mob.
Mr Trump has condemned the violence, saying the rioters must be held accountable.
Four other people also lost their lives during the clashes, including a female Trump supporter who was shot dead by police and three people who died from medical emergencies.
After a rally where Mr Trump repeated claims of vote rigging and said "we will never concede", hundreds of supporters stormed the Capitol building, forcing senators and members of the House of Representatives to flee as they smashed windows and looted.
In the wake of the violence, both US transportation secretary Elaine Chao and education secretary Betsy DeVos resigned, joining a growing list of aides leaving the outgoing administration in protest.

As opponents demanded his immediate removal from office, Mr Trump conceded defeat to Joe Biden for the first time, acknowledging in a video that a "new administration" would be sworn in on 20 January and vowing to ensure a "smooth transition".
The president-elect has branded those who besieged the US Capitol as "domestic terrorists" and said Wednesday's violence was an "assault on our liberty".
