White House scrambles to smooth over Biden's Taiwan gaffe - The Times

The White House attempted to limit the damage from a gaffe by President Biden today after he said that the US was committed to defending Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion.

At a televised town hall gathering last night, Biden was asked if he would “vow to protect Taiwan” if China attacked the self-governed island republic, which Beijing claims as its own. In an apparent departure from Washington’s long-stated policy of “strategic ambiguity” on Taiwan, the president replied: “Yes, we have a commitment to do that.”

The response provoked a sharp rebuke from Beijing, which has recently stepped up aggressive military manoeuvres towards Taiwan, flying dozens of warplanes close to the island and rehearsing beach landings.
