Facebook’s former chief executive in Australia has said the company “blinked” first after its attempt to “bully” the country’s government over a new law triggered international backlash.
The tech giant has said it will restore the ability for people in Australia to see and post news articles on its platform after striking a deal with the government to pay media organisations for their content.
Stephen Scheeler, the former boss of Facebook Australia and New Zealand, said Facebook’s initial move to ban its 14 million Australian users from accessing and sharing news last Thursday was an act of “bullying”.
