Pfizer-Biontech Covid vaccine is 98.9% effective at stopping severe illness, study finds - The Times

Two doses of the Pfizer-Biontech vaccine are 98.9 per cent effective against being hospitalised with or dying from Covid-19, according to new figures from Israel.

The country’s health ministry described the vaccine as “dramatically effective” as it released the findings, based on data collected from around 1.7 million Israelis who had been fully vaccinated by January 30. It compared them with people who had not received any jabs.

The data showed the risk of becoming ill with the coronavirus fell by 95.8 per cent after the second dose, while it was 98 per cent effective in preventing breathing problems or a fever.

“The vaccine dramatically reduces serious illness and death and you can see this influence in our morbidity statistics,” said Chezy Levy, Israel’s health
